Make visual novels with your mouse: scenes, characters, choices, endings, menus and animations — no code required. Ren'Py runs under the hood: build for Windows, Mac, Linux and Steam, and everything you make stays a plain script you can still edit by hand.

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Kagami Forge already works: you can make a whole visual novel with it, from the first scene to a finished build. But a tool like this lives or dies by how real people use it. Every creator works differently, and I’d rather hear “this is annoying” from you now than guess for another year. Early Access lets me build the next features around what you actually need.”

Approximately how long will this software be in Early Access?

“About 6–12 months, depending on how much feedback comes in and what turns out to matter most.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Planned before 1.0:

Android and web builds in one click
Side images (character portrait next to the dialogue box)
Text effects in the line editor: bold, colour, pauses, typing speed
Scene filters: night, sepia, black and white
Clickable image menus (maps, rooms)
More ready-made plugins and interface themes
macOS and Linux versions of the studio
Lots of polish based on your reports

The list will change as you tell me what’s missing.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Everything you need to make and release a visual novel is in:

Scene editor: drag characters, pick expressions, add lines, choices, music and transitions with the mouse
Story map with every branch and ending; broken jumps are flagged
Characters, variables, animations, voice acting, translations
Interface editor for the main menu, dialogue box and screens
Achievements, gallery, music room
Checks before building, project-wide find and replace, undo for everything
Plugins and Steam Workshop
Builds for Windows, macOS, Linux and Steam

The project is always plain Ren’Py: open your .rpy files in any editor, and the studio picks up the changes. Expect some rough edges and bugs, that’s what Early Access is for.”

Will this software be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will probably go up a little at full release. If you buy during Early Access, you get every update, including 1.0, at no extra cost.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Through the Steam discussions and the Workshop. I read every bug report and suggestion, and the most requested features move up the list. There’s a “Collect report” button right in the studio, so sending me a bug takes one click. Plugins and shared animations in the Workshop let the community extend the studio themselves.”

About This Software

Your visual novel — no programming

Kagami Forge is a visual novel editor that lets you assemble a story like a video editor. Drag backgrounds and characters onto the stage, write dialogue, add choices — and see each moment exactly as the player will.

Under the hood is Ren'Py, the engine behind thousands of visual novels. Everything you create is a plain Ren'Py script: open it and edit it by hand anytime, and mix the visual editor with code as much as you like.

Features

  • Scene — backgrounds, sprites, expressions, dialogue, transitions, music and video. Click any moment to preview the frame without launching the game.

  • Story — the whole novel on one graph: scenes, branches, endings. See where every choice leads.

  • Variables and endings — trust, money, flags. See which choices change them and which ending they unlock. While the game runs, watch the values live and tweak them on the fly.

  • Characters — name color, typing speed, voice blips, portrait, a name plate of their own. Dialogue styles: classic textbox, speech bubble over the sprite, phone chat, full-screen NVL.

  • Interface — main menu, dialogue window, saves, settings and inventory from ready-made templates. Drag, recolor, add sounds and animate every single button.

  • Animations — a library of ready-made motions and effects plus an editor for your own.

  • Assets — images, sprites, sounds, video and fonts in one place. Pick fonts straight from Windows — the editor warns you if a font can't be redistributed or lacks the letters you need.

  • Writer's notes — cards for characters, places and plotlines, plus a daily word goal. Never shipped with the game.

  • Localization — export a spreadsheet for translators and import it back.

  • Splash screen — logos, credits and an 18+ age gate when the game starts.

  • Build — Windows, macOS, Linux and a Steam folder in one click.

Your games belong to you

No royalties, no mandatory logos. Sell your novels anywhere — on Steam

Mistakes are safe

Undo and redo survive restarts. The editor keeps project backups and won't let a broken edit ruin your script.

Easy to start

The tutorial project is a small game in itself: play it, then open its scenes and see how everything is made. Interface in English and Russian.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Parts of Kagami Forge’s program code were written with the help of AI coding assistants. Every change was reviewed and tested by the developer. The store art, icons, screenshots and trailer are not AI-generated, and the demo project uses the Ren’Py sample art (MIT licence). Kagami Forge does not generate any content with AI while you use it: everything in your project is made by you.
