What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are releasing this game early access so we can involve the community in shaping its future. We have spent a long time making the flying and combat realistic and need help to evolve the game without losing these key elements.

We want the game to be more inclusive and accessible and we will promote discussion about these issues here in the forums. We will be working with the community to identify new customisation options to add to the game.

We want to know what new graphical effects and features that you want to see in the game. Think explosions / squibs / weather effects etc.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The game will be in early access for the remainder of 2021. We want to let as many people as possible experience this game and grow an inclusive community before we take it out of early access.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Right now, you can host a game to play online with players tha own the game on Steam. The game is small and has been designed around having a breath-taking flying experience in VR. We are looking to continue development across key areas detailed in the following.

We will look at a new matchmaking algorithm as the number of online players increases.

We want to push on accessibility and inclusivity. We have support for VR controllers (holding the yoke and throttle in VR), HOTAS, gamepad and the Logitech Dual Controller. We want more customization options - let us know.

We are going to introduce a lot of new graphical effects. These will range from fragmenting aircraft to new environmental systems like rain, wind noise – and sea waves that respond to the aircraft.

We are continually increasing the realism of the flight model and physics – while we are ensuring that it remains fun. Expect small increments here – like flexing wings and an improved Fokker flight model.

We are also improving the single-player AI - so expect better dogfights here soon.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current state of the Early Access version is a reasonably stable and fun flight experience. The AI on single player is limited.

Currently, we don’t have dedicated servers, but importantly, you can currently have exciting air battles with your friends, and other players in the world (as the number of players increases you'll see games appear).”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We expect to raise the cost of the game a little after the end of early access. Importantly, we want this game to remain small and fun.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will start discussions around all our interests and the game development features we are introducing. We are also keen for users to create stories about their experiences,
all of which, we will add here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1633020/discussions/”

About This Game

Flying Colours is a multiplayer arena-based PVP flight combat simulator for VR. Take to the skies in the iconic Sopwith Camel (and seaplane variant), Fokker Triplane or Hansa-Brandenburg W.29 seaplane and do battle around a fictional island group. Use your flying skills, teamwork and combat strategy to rule the skies and dominate the opposition.

This game is in Early Access and is being constantly improved. Please view the Early Access information for more details.

The game features a flight engine with realistic aerodynamic modelling and damage system that changes how the aircraft is controlled with every hit. Controlled with an Xbox, or compatible dual analogue controller, or virtual controls you will achieve real-life manoeuvres, stunts and soon master taxying, take-off, landing a vintage taildragger aircraft or handling a seaplane.

Fuel strategy can be the difference between air superiority and finding yourself on the back foot. Take off quickly, with less fuel but a lighter and better performing aeroplane for quick sorties, or fuel for longer, suffer a performance decrease due to the weight but stay aloft for longer patrols. Land anywhere "off-piste" and receive a jerrycan of fuel to get you safely home, or just to continue ruling the skies for a little longer.

Flying Colours brings you exhilarating combat, smoke-trail filled skies, chaotic battles, hilarious in-flight mishaps, and a taste of real vintage air combat in two of the most recognisable fighter aircraft of the early twentieth century.

Why did we make this game?

Remember when we were young, we might have played with toy aeroplanes and models. Back then our bedrooms became the scenery as we re-enacted daring air battles and the amazing feats from those air aces. Flying Colours is the game that was made to bring back those memories. There are few rules, just a flight playground for you against others online. Fancy 7 vs 1? Go for it! Want to challenge each other to perform crazy stunts and explore the limitations of your aircraft? Absolutely!

We made the game we wanted to play. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
