What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Chicken Invaders Universe is an exceptionally ambitious project, and its scope is far greater than any previous episode in the series. The MMO mechanics and the client/server technology behind are brand new and largely unproven. It is therefore necessary to go through a series of gradual release steps.

The game has already seen a very limited release through the developer's website, but now it's time to scale up and broaden the audience. This will allow us to stress test critical MMO components of the game, and also collect feedback from newcomers and other representative players (as opposed to experts).

Early Access will also shape the final product based on your ideas and suggestions.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“3-6 months”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The core of the game will not change, however content will be continuously added during the Early Access period, and even following it. Balancing (mechanics, economy, difficulty) will also be performed throughout. Finally, localizations will also be added.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The following features are currently working:

This is the same finger-blistering shooting action as previous Chicken Invaders episodes, but cranked up to 11. New enemy types and bosses have been introduced, and you now also have to contend with environmental hazards. The weapon arsenal has been completely revamped (with the invaluable help of the community of players!), and weapons now deal more damage and look more spectacular than ever. New mechanics such as weapon charging, chaining, and splitting, enable sophisticated solutions to any chicken-related problem.

  • Explore a shared, persistent galaxy. 100+ constellations, 1,000+ star systems, 6,000+ planets, 20,000+ missions to fly.

  • Distinct planet types (Alien world, Inferno, Frozen wasteland, Barren rock, Gas giant, Terran planet, Artificial moon) affect types and difficulty of missions.

  • Galactic landmarks have been scattered throughout: Space Burger, Heroes Academy, Fortune Teller, Heroware, Gus's Gas, and Asteroid Belts.

  • NPC's roam the galaxy (Supply Droids and Shady Dealers), with more to come. NPCs can be raided, or traded with.

You are free to select your spacecraft load-out before each mission starts by mounting equipment into your available slots. Choose between offensive, defensive, exploratory, and informational power-ups. 165 unique pieces of equipment can be combined to suit your playing style. Spacecraft components can also be configurable (weapon, reactor, engine, heat sink, satellites, hardpoints), which affect its performance during the mission.

Extensive cosmetic customization of your spacecraft fleet. Everything is individually customizable -- you can even name your spacecraft for that extra personal touch. Compare and contrast your fleet against other recruits.

  • Contacts list: Add your friends to your in-game contact list to follow their progress in the game. Compare your stats against them at any time. Issue "friendly" challenges to contrast your world-saving abilities.

  • Squadrons: Form squadrons with your fellow recruits, and fly assignments to boost their reputation and gain rewards.

  • Challenge missions are delivered to your in-game inbox daily: Daily mission (short mission, can be flown only once), Weapons Training (must be flown using particular weapons), Weekly mission (long mission, can be flown multiple times), Space Race (fastest completion time wins), Ironman competition (only for the best-of-the-best). Your performance in each challenge mission is ranked, and prizes are awarded to the top-10 performing players. Challenges are meticulously seeded in order to remove any randomization effects and ensure that everyone is on a level playing field -- only your skill matters.

  • League: Climb up the rankings by daring fellow recruits to a mission of your own choosing and beating their score.

  • Top Pilots: Daily rankings of individual recruits, sorted by score, number of waves flown, and total flight time.

  • Top Squadrons: Daily rankings of squadron activity, based on assignments flown and total score/waves/time.

  • All-time Best: Score-based ranking that takes account your entire game career. Your entry always increases -- the more you play, the higher you reach.

  • Stats: An overview of your progress in the game, expressed in either absolute or per-hour terms. Stats can be compared against any other recruit.

  • Rankings: A comparative view of your performance against all other active players.

  • Medals: 40 unique medals await to be collected, awarded for both individual and squadron performance, and milestone achievements in your career.

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Price will not change after leaving Early Access. The base game will be free, with optional IAP purchases.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We're aiming to actively involve the community both in ensuring the final game's quality (bug reports), and also through contributions to game content (ideas and suggestions).

Community input is taken very seriously -- in fact, there are actual in-game medals awarded for both bugs fixed and new content/feature additions as a result of community submissions. We have a proven track record (2+ years on this game alone) of the final product being fundamentally shaped by the community: so far, over 450 in-game medals have been awarded for ideas, and 490 for bugs. The game's weapons arsenal has also already received several overhauls exclusively as a result of community input.

When the time comes, the community will also be actively involved in the localization of the game into different languages (as has been the case with previous Chicken Invaders episodes).

We will be actively monitoring both the Steam forums as well as the game's dedicated forum at https://chickeninvaders.com for your suggestions.

We promise that we’ll look at each of your ideas carefully. However, there is no guarantee that we’ll put them in the game. There are many considerations (some creative and some technical), conflicting requirements, and limitations when evaluating your ideas, and as much as we’d like to, it’s impossible for us to use every idea. Sadly, some great ideas will be left unimplemented.

Here are some things to keep in mind when submitting your ideas:

  • How well does it fit into existing game mechanics? It’s always better if base your idea on existing game mechanics because it keeps complexity down. Example: a new weapon that uses the heat/overheat mechanic is better than a weapon that uses food items each time it’s fired.

  • Is your idea fresh, or is it an incremental evolution of an existing one? It’s better if you come up something entirely fresh. Example: an entirely new “Turkey” boss would be better than an extra attack pattern on the Yolk-Star. However, the advantage of incremental ideas are typically easier to implement (see below), so there’s no clear winner here.

  • How fully is it fleshed out? The more time you have spent on it, and the more detail you can explain it in, the better. Detailed descriptions and sketches go a long way towards helping us understand exactly what it is you’re trying to convey.

  • How popular is your idea with other players? You certainly think it’s the best thing since sliced bread, but do others share your feelings? It’s always better if your idea enjoys popular support. To this end, we’ll also conduct surveys on the forums in order to shortlist your ideas if need be.

  • Is it an original idea? Or is it just “that thing from my favourite multi-billion dollar franchise”? As much as we would like a full Chicken Invaders - Star Wars crossover, your ideas need to be sufficiently original to avoid getting slapped with a copyright infringement lawsuit.

  • How well does your idea fit within the game’s framework? It’s always better if you work within the spirit of the game. Example: ideas that fit within the 2D overhead wave mechanic are better than an idea that requires changing the perspective to first person 3D for a few waves.

  • How hard is your idea to implement technically? Can we use the existing infrastructure to implement it, or will it require extensive changes to our engine? How much will it add to the game’s download or installed size, and how much will it affect the CPU/memory run-time requirements?

About This Game

Chicken Invaders needs no introduction.

Well, fine, if you insist. Chicken Invaders is the most successful chicken game of this millennium (not to mention the previous one). The game puts you at the forefront of a battle against invading intergalactic chickens, bent on revenge against the human race for our oppression of Earth chickens.

In Chicken Invaders Universe, you assume the role of a new recruit in the United Hero Force (UHF), mankind's last hope against the fowl Henpire. You start your UHF career deployed in some backwater galactic star system, and it's up to you to advance through UHF ranks and earn your place in the honorary annals of Heroes Academy. Travel across the galaxy, explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, and exterminate any Henpire forces that cross your path. And do so in style.
