What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I want to gather feedback from the community early in the development and support the growth of the community before the full release.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“2-3 years. There is a public roadmap of monthly releases on my website that currently plans the full release on May 2022 but things are open to change.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Features that I am planning to implement:
- Various improvements of the NPCs AI (deeper decision-making process and more believable behavior)
- Economy management mechanics (player will have better control over certain economical aspects of the simulation)
- Random events (NPCs randomly perform specific scenarios that player has to react to)
- Criminality mechanics (NPCs can perform criminal acts and player can control criminality in the village)
- Nobility mechanics (NPCs can be of a noble origin and act differently / have different needs)
- Army mechanics (NPCs can be trained as soldiers/guards)
- Ruling family (the ruling family is part of the world and the player must arrange a marriage to ensure the continuation of the bloodline)
- Wild and domesticated animals, animal husbandry and hunting mechanics
- Mod-friendly support and steam workshop support

The plan is also to add more content, expanding the types of zones, structures, and professions the NPCs can make, work on the audio and music and improve the graphics of the game with better visuals and effects.

Plans and scope might change based on community feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“All the core mechanics are implemented according to the about section below with a few key differences:
- Villagers AI is very limited, does not disobey orders, has an only limited set of needs and does not simulate relationships between villagers
- Taxation and personal ownership of resources is not currently part of the game. All resources are shared between all villagers and the player.
- The production chain and types of zones and professions are only partially implemented and contain about 20 zones and 70 resources.
- The effects of winter and other weather conditions are currently purely visual and do not affect gameplay”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I plan to increase the price in two waves, roughly once a year depending on how fast the development progresses, to reflect the added value and reward the early adopters. These changes will be communicated openly and in advance so players have a chance to purchase the game before the price increases.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I plan to do monthly releases to gather feedback, communicate with fans directly on discord and other social media, and involve them in playtesting sessions. Players are also encouraged to mod the game, share their content, and provide suggestions that can alter the development plans.”

About This Game

Build your Settlement

Use the toolset to create and decorate the houses for your villagers. Expand your manor, build churches, warehouses and all kinds of buildings your civilization needs to prosper. Thanks to your input, no settlement is ever the same.

Split the Land

Take advantage of the procedurally generated world, understand where certain lands are best to be and set your village up in the most efficient way. Or just experiment and go wild!

Manage Families

The family profession is passed between generations and their members are tied to your service. Your production depends on who is living in your settlement so be sure to get to know them well.

Provide Land to the People

Your villagers are tied with their life to your land and will work as long as they are given the opportunity but they can also be the source of problems and may disobey your orders.

Expand your Production Chain

The production chain involves over 100 different resources and 40 professions. Every game is different and so are the industries you end up adopting in your economy.

Prepare for the Winter

Collect production and control the economy. Take too much and your villagers may starve. Take too little and you might be in trouble with the king. Are you willing to risk some lives?

Be Part of the Community

Lords & Villeins has been in development for over two years and everything from the art, code, and music has been done by a single game developer. It still has a long way to go and it would not exist without the support of my friends and the community. I encourage you to be part of it and would love to welcome you on our journey to see this game where it can ultimately be.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

The characters in the game can perform criminal acts such as stealing, assault, or murder. Dead bodies are disposed (buried in the ground) as part of the gameplay. Game characters also hunt and process animals for food.
