What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“SENTRY aims to create an experience unlike any action tower defense-based game available on Steam, one with a powerful player and intelligent enemies, encapsulating the feeling of a desperate, dynamic campaign defending a spaceship against an overwhelming foe. We firmly believe that the involvement of players is crucial in ensuring the game delivers on that promise.

Early Access is something we used to great effect on our previous title, launching a constant stream of major updates and smaller releases, always incorporating community feedback along the way. We intend to build upon that model with SENTRY, providing updates that add swathes of new content alongside continual improvements to the base game. Our intention is to make you love what you have, but eagerly anticipate what’s to come!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Based on our current plans, we expect to be in Early Access for 9-12 months.

That timeline may change depending on the feedback we receive during the Early Access process.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“During Early Access we plan to add more levels, weapons, traps, turrets and enemies.

A major update focused on two-player co-op is a particularly exciting upcoming feature in the pipeline.

We're also planning a host of additional systems that enhance and expand the experience, all complemented by constant improvements, balancing and bug-fixing.

For more specific details please review our roadmap.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Right now you’ll be getting a fun game that lasts for several hours for the majority of players. We’ve found a lot of demo and playtest people have played for much longer, which we see as an encouraging sign!

There are currently 9 weapons, 15 deployables (our name for traps and turrets) and 6 gear items. All are individually upgradeable. You will be facing 10 enemy classes, some carry alternate weapons and some have differing tiers that provide even greater combat variety. You will be defending your ship across 7 levels.

All of this is framed within a dynamic campaign, where you must escape Earth. This takes the form of a Navigator mode where you choose routes to travel through a space map. When you are attacked by enemy vessels, you’re taken to an Overview of your ship. The aliens will attack levels and attempt to take them over. This is where you battle them in the FPS/TD gameplay, and your performance in this mode impacts the other layers. For example, losing a level means the enemy progress further into your ship. All of this gives greater weight to your actions and is a more compelling experience than a traditional linear campaign.

After each major update we’ll expand this section with more detail, but our intention is that whatever point of the Early Access journey you join us, you’ll be getting a supremely enjoyable game that is only going to get bigger and better.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The game will be cheaper in Early Access. At some point when the game is approaching full release we will increase the price, but this will be clearly communicated in advance.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“With your support, we can turn SENTRY into something truly special. Therefore feedback is absolutely critical in making the game the best it can be, and you can provide that to us via our two main channels; the Steam forums and Discord. We will of course engage with appropriate feedback on any social media we have a presence on too!

We always aim to be very clear in our communications and respond within 24 hours. We'll do everything we can to foster a happy and thriving community.”

About This Game

As a member of the SENTRY Defense Program, you have been thawed from stasis to protect your vessel as it flees across space.

As you choose your escape route in the Navigator, encounters with alien vessels are unavoidable. They will board your ship and attempt to fight their way through different subsystems to destroy the Core.

Your SENTRY must thwart the enemy by bringing to bear an arsenal of potent ranged weaponry. Even with the best shooting abilities, holding back the hordes is only possible by deploying traps and turrets - and if all else fails, utilizing environmental destruction to stem their advance; a well-timed shot could vent aliens into space, a closed blast door could buy you time to set up new defenses.

Should your SENTRY fall in battle, death is not the end. Another member of the crew will be thawed from stasis by the SENTRY Defense Program, ready to continue the fight.

Even if you fail to defend a level, defeat only changes the strategic landscape in the Ship Overview, forcing you to make new decisions on where to make your next defiant stand.

As long as there is a surviving SENTRY and the Core remains operational, your skills in combat mean victory can always be grasped from the jaws of defeat.

SENTRY aims to carve out its own path in the Action-Defense genre by featuring a campaign where your choices and performance matter. Battles are not one-off events, defeat doesn’t mean replaying a checkpoint. Everything feeds into the ongoing battle for your ship’s survival.

A SENTRY is fast, responsive - and therefore powerful. Deployable traps, turrets and environmental destruction opportunities are needed to supplement this power when facing near-overwhelming forces of reactive and aggressive enemies. Successful escapes will need to utilize a mixture of skill and planning, with discovery and upgrading of new equipment providing an edge in combat.

Combining all these elements evokes the feeling of being a beleaguered and outnumbered SENTRY. On the journey you may lose battles, but you can win the war.
