What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I’ve chosen to release A Crooked Heart for Early Access to gather as much feedback as possible. She is counting on me to tell her story and give you, the player an enjoyable experience in the process. I’m a one-man artist/developer for A Crooked Heart so obtaining feedback from the community and supporters is crucial. The other reason to step into Early Access is the chance to weed out bugs and issues that range from gameplay experience to whatever I can’t foresee now. All feedback will be taken into consideration and greatly appreciated.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“From now until it’s release in Winter 2021.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version is part of the initial chapter. I say part because its main purpose is to give the player an idea about the style and gameplay. The final version will tell the whole story with new character abilities, added puzzles and about 30 additional levels.

I’m using an off the shelf engine template because trying to understand code makes my brain mushy. The Corgi Engine by More Mountains, not affiliated with A Crooked Heart, gives me everything I need to bring the game to life. In the future, I’ll be hiring a programmer to help me bring the game to the next level and provide a more immersive experience with puzzles, upgrades, enemy and boss interaction to name a few.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The first of eight chapters have been completed. This release will let you control Lulu through 15 levels trying to save Orion. She’ll encounter enemies, obstacles and other nefarious creatures that are tasked will her destruction.
The gameplay mechanics for Lulu and the current list of enemies have all been completed.
So you should get a great impression on how the game will play and look when released.

The abilities she has so far are
  • Blue Blast
  • Dash Damage
  • The Red Blast power up is available in this release as well

In the future she’ll have

  • Directional Dash Damage
  • Ground Bash with Power ups
  • more Blast Power ups
  • Grab small enemies and use them as projectiles.
  • Push and Pull medium sized objects
  • Dash while crouched
  • Ledge grab as an attack

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. The price will increase a little after leaving Early Access. Those that support and purchase A Crooked Heart at the Early Access price are locked in. They will receive a final version of the game a week before release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The main reason I am releasing the game for Early Access is to gather feedback from players. I want people to enjoy their experience with A Crooked Heart. And feedback from the gaming community is one of the best ways to do that.

About This Game

A Crooked Heart

You play as Lulu who is one of two Corgis left in the world. After a deadly battle, her love Orion was captured by the sentient parasite, Seavus. During her journey, Lulu will encounter nefarious enemies and increasingly deadly bosses. She’ll discover the truth behind Seavus and its connection to the Corgi species as well as the source of her newfound abilities. She will save Orion, the slaves of Arotha and destroy Seavus.

This first version of the game you're purchasing is the prologue. Part one will follow soon. During the course of the year I will be uploading small, progress builds. Around July will be a big release for part two. December will wrap up part 3 and into the final release.

I love games with story but not when it is favored over the player's experience. My intention is to keep the story subtle in how the thread is unraveled throughout. I do not want to interfere with the fun you'll experience you have destroying and fighting the barrage of enemies, bosses and obstacles you'll encounter.
Any cutscenes will be no longer than 20 seconds.

Why are Lulu and Orion important to Seavus?
Fusing with the world's primary sources of food, which is the very essence of a creature, gives Seavus his strength. When Seavus began to spread, he sought only the strongest hosts to infect and absorb. Soon he discovered that out of all the creatures he absorbed, the Corgi, though small in scale, was the tremendous source of essence he desired. Seavus’ greed has brought many creatures to the brink of extinction and although Lulu and Orion were able to escape the inevitable purge and go into hiding, Seavus’ minions finally captured Orion, leaving poor Lulu behind. Sadly, his most desired Corgis were nearly gone but Seavus will stop at nothing to infect the last that remain.
How did Lulu survive?
During the capture of Orion, a small piece of Seavus became lodged in Lulu’s heart as she tried to fight them off. As the infection began to take hold, the piece of Seavus became overwhelmed by her love for Orion. As the mutation spread throughout Lulu's body it became Rogue, a self-aware entity within her, which retained elements of Seavus' power. Rogue revitalized Lulu and has given her the ability to access upgrades and powers that will help her destroy Seavus and save Orion. But what will happen to Lulu and Rogue when Seavus is destroyed?
What happens when Seavus is destroyed?
Rogue and Lulu have merged, and their fate will depend on how deep their connection develops during the story. Will her connection with Rogue be severed? If so, what does that mean? However, the story plays out it will be handled with grace and care. Fundamentally, this is a story of love.

Art Style

Designing characters that pop is always important, especially during fast paced action. The contrast in A Crooked Heart delivers on this important goal while showcasing a stylized presentation not often seen in the mainstream media.
The juxtaposition between the B&W backgrounds and the colorful characters and effects allows for a freedom to design each independently while having the opportunity to play with the aspects that unite them. The backgrounds retain a high level of detail exploring exciting imagery throughout each level. Meanwhile the colorful character and effects look clean and sharp providing players the ability to focus on the action with clarity. So much effort has been put towards providing a beautiful and fun experience. I hope every player enjoys this unique experience and falls in love with Lulu on her grand adventure.
