What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“A startup game is balanced by groups of real people arguing over it, not by us alone. A full run already works from the first day to the final verdict. Early Access is how we learn which decisions are fun, which situations are still funny the third time, and where a run falls apart — and fix it with you while we add more of everything.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect about two years. It is an estimate, not a commitment: it depends on how the game grows and on what we learn from players.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version already contains a complete 30-day run, but its content pool is limited. For the full version we plan to broaden that pool with more situations, business models, niches, market conditions, investors and clients, giving runs more ways to diverge.
Our current plans also include competitive play between rival startups (PvP), Steam Achievements, macOS support, voice-over and more languages. These are plans, not guarantees; the order may change as we see what players actually use.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“A full run is playable start to finish: 30 game days, about two hours, solo or in online co-op with friends for up to 4 players. You start in an empty office and end with a verdict — bust, survived or thriving — with headlines and awards about how you got there.
In the build: choosing who pays (B2C or B2B); building, improving and shipping your product fast, normally or properly; a phone full of decisions, bank statements and a feed that talks about you; situations and promises with consequences; investors and clients who remember what you did; hiring; growth, money and company tracks; a rival company; a niche and market conditions drawn anew for each run.
The main limitation today is variety: after several runs, you will start seeing situations repeat. Balance and polish are in progress.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. Early Access starts below the price we intend for the finished game, and the price may go up as the game gains content and features.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Through Steam Discussions, our Discord and open co-op playtests. We most want to know where you got confused or bored, which decisions made a story worth retelling, how the balance differs solo and in a group, and which situations got old. We publish update notes explaining what changed and why. Feedback drives balance, usability and what we build next.”

About This Game

Definitely a Unicorn is a co-op game about a startup you and your friends try to drag to success before the money runs out. You have an empty office, a brilliant idea and a bank account that burns fast. The rest is up to you.

Everyone is a co-founder
And everyone is sure they're in charge. Decisions land on every phone at once, and whoever answers first has decided for the company. Talking it over first is optional. Recommended, though.

Who is actually paying you?
A crowd of users or a couple of fat clients? The crowd brings noise, memes and burning servers. The clients bring contracts, deadlines and promises one of you has already made.

Ship it now or do it properly
Half-baked ships fast. The bugs get found later, by your users, at the worst possible moment.

They will remember you
Investors, clients and journalists remember what you promised and how it turned out. Next time, they treat you accordingly.

Burn rate
Rent, salaries, servers. When the account runs dry you beg, cut, or finally sell something. Or somebody.

Different every time
A different niche, a different market, a different rival — and an entirely different disaster. One thing never changes: someone will bring up exactly where you screwed up.

One session takes about two hours, solo or with up to four players. At the end you find out what you became: a unicorn, survivors, or a cautionary tale.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

A game about people fighting over credit should be clear about who did what.

The author, all one of him, designs the game, architects and writes it, draws the art, plays every build and approves everything that ships.

With AI: the music and some of the sound effects are generated; the in-game text, the translations and this store page were written with AI assistants and edited by the author; the code is written by the author together with AI assistants and reviewed by him.

Without AI: the art, the models (made by the author or licensed) and the decisions. Nothing is generated while you play.

The assistants asked for equity. They were turned down.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

This game contains mature themes presented in a satirical manner. It includes mild profanity, references to stress, burnout, and failure, as well as depictions of alcohol consumption in a workplace context. There is no graphic violence, sexual content, or depiction of self-harm.
