What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Sapiens is already fun to play, with many hours of content to enjoy. But as a huge and deep sandbox, the potential for future content is limitless. The time is right to get the game out there and start getting the community involved, providing feedback, and building mods.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Sapiens may be in early access for a couple of years or more. There is a lot of potential, so it makes sense to take the time to get it right.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Sapiens has been built with multiplayer in mind, but it needs more work and lots of community testing and feedback before it will be ready. So multiplayer will come after the early access launch. Full controller support and VR support are also planned to be completed for the full release.

The full version will also add more later game content, as well as the addition of new mechanics, refinement of the existing experience, and progressing further into future technologies. You can expect to see the addition of boats, fishing, horseback riding and the transport of goods. More interactions with other tribes will be added, with the ability to trade or steal, recruit or fight. Also, expect to move further into the medieval era and beyond with the crafting of metal tools, and more advanced farming and refining processes.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Sapiens is a stable and enjoyable experience, and focuses on getting the core gameplay and mechanics right. There is already many hours of content to play through.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price is likely to rise as the game gets more refined with more content after the Early Access release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“There is an active forum and discord server for communicating between players and the developer. Throughout the early access period and beyond, the direction of development will be driven by feedback and discussions with the community.

Sapiens also has a very flexible modding interface using Lua, so members of the community will be able to contribute everything from major game-changing mods to minor tweaks and content, all influencing the game directly.”

“After playing the demo for a few hours, there’s a good chance I’m going to sink a lot of hours into this one.”

About This Game

Sapiens is the debut PC title from solo developer Dave Frampton, known for Blockheads, Chopper, and Chopper 2.

In Sapiens you create your own prehistoric civilization. Lead your tribe from the ground, immersed in the world while you shape it. Build towns and industry with complete freedom and control, from placing the tiniest pebble to constructing monumental structures. Start with nothing and advance through thousands of years of technological breakthroughs in this intimate yet expansive colony sim.

Choose Your Home

Pick from thousands of procedurally generated lands across a map larger than Earth itself. Choose wisely, as each area has different climates, resources, and challenges. Finding the right place to begin your home is key to growing your civilisation.

Lead Your People

Walk the paths beside your people as you lead them through this uncharted world. Instruct individual sapiens to focus on specific tasks, such as planting crops, gathering materials, building, hunting, cooking, and more. Watch as they learn new skills, making them more valuable to your tribe. Manage their moods, health, and support their growing families.

Find Resources

Find new resources and send your sapiens to investigate, leading to new breakthroughs which unlock new things to build and craft. Start with primitive materials and work your way up to using more advanced tools and techniques.

Build A Civilization

Build shelters, both to keep your sapiens happy and to preserve food and resources. Every wall, roof, seat or fireplace can be placed individually. Each tree, log, plank or rock can be removed or situated, and the terrain can be dug, mined or filled to shape the world the way you want.

Expand Your Reach

Send sapiens over long distances and establish camps to gather far away resources. Create transportation networks to bring those resources back to your base for processing or storage. Send a group to explore over great distances, or conduct a hunting mission. Take down a mammoth to feed and clothe your tribe for months, but know that you may lose some sapiens trying.

Sapiens features extensive mod support through Steam Workshop.
