What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We here in The Battle Grounds Game Development team have lots of ideas for The Battle Grounds III, but as volunteers we don't always have as much time as we like. By giving access to players, we hope to open the door to feedback that will help us prioritize features and make The Battle Grounds III as good as it can be with what time we have. We need to hear from the players.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The game will be in Early Access for no longer than 6 months. Based on our roadmap of biweekly updates, this is very feasible.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Here is a list of features which are planned for further development. These plans are tentative and may change in response to player feedback or other outside events:
-A training level to teach new soldiers how to play;
-An improved user interface, especially with the in-game HUD;
-Official servers located around the world, allowing soldiers everywhere to have a comfortable experience;
-Translations of the UI and closed captions into about 10 other languages;
-A colorblind mode to support soldiers who are colorblind and soldiers who are new to the game;
-Fully licensed music to be acquired for playing during gameplay events;
-Comprehensive documentation and guides to allow players to create their own Battle Grounds III content and run their own servers;
-Cosmetic-only, non-tradable extras for veteran players who supported us during earlier alpha and beta testing;
-Additional gamemode mechanics for streamlining the experience in other gamemodes (ex. automated linebattle officer rotation);
-Increased bot support for Capture-The-Flag, Siege, and/or Linebattle gamemodes;
-Integration with Steam achievements and the Steam workshop;
-And any other features yet to be discovered or suggested by players.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“All features described on the Steam Store page are complete and accessible. The Early Access version spent 6 years in development, and hence the game is very playable.
Most work that still needs to be done revolves around cosmetics, accessibility, and support.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We are proud that The Battle Grounds franchise has been and always will be free. We have no plans for any purchasable cosmetics or add-ons.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“By listening to player feedback, we will prioritize our development goals in order to create content that really matters to players.

Players can report bugs from the game's main menu, discuss issues on the Steam forums, and send emails to . Our players are our greatest resource.”

Changelog 14/7/19 - Map Updates!

Attention soldiers! As announced yesterday, many maps have been updated, and it's important that both players and servers get the update! Players need only restart their games, while servers need to update via the
app_update 1057700
command in the steamcmd console.

The official servers in New York, France, and Germany are already up-to-date.

On many maps, the number of spawn points was increased so as to better support higher numbers of players. And here is a list of significant changes on other maps:
  • sg_siege: fixed exploit which allowed players to escape the intended playing area, made the pitfall trap more visible
  • bg_freemans_farm: fixed model error inside house
  • bg_maricopa: fixed a model error inside house
  • bg_plateau: adjusted player clipping in spawns to prevent players from climbing hills in spawn and camping there
  • lb_battleofconcord: fixed some trees which were non-solid

Thank you for your discipline, soldiers! See you on the battle grounds.

Map Update Rollout SUNDAY, Changelog 13/7/19

Troops! We have secret plans to release a huge package of map updates on Sunday, July 14th, at 3pm EST / 7pm GMT. It is important that servers and players update at the same time, or else players won't be able to play! The official servers will be updated at this time, so players will always be able to play there.

Also on this day, Saturday 13/7/19, we rolled out a new patch which addresses several issues.
  • Fixed some cases where admin commands were not working when selecting a player by name. Here is some reference for selecting players by name:
    • Search is first performed as case-sensitive, and then case-insensitive if nothing is found.
    • The search term will match a player if at least 5 characters match or it is an exact match.
  • Added a delay between when a server switches maps and when bots are automatically added. This gives servers a chance to fill up with players before adding bots.
  • When a player joins, their name, Steam ID, and assigned admin permission will appear in the server console. This is useful for server owners who are debugging their server setup.
  • In the scoreboard, players are now sorted by damage instead of by score.

We are working hard on the new admin menu, and we are hoping to finish it so that it can be packaged with the update tomorrow!

We would also like to let everyone know that just because we have not fixed an issue or bug does not mean we are not aware of it. Here is a list of known issues we are planning to fix, in no particular order:
  • The "Mute Players" menu does not work consistently;
  • There is no server-side player mute option;
  • The scoreboard size and layout are incorrect after changing screen resolution;
  • There have been reports of team chat not working properly;
  • The swivel guns occasionally let players fire them in unrealistic "rapid fire";
  • On a particular map, it is possible to escape the intended playing area (this is being fixed in the map update tomorrow)
  • When picking a team, the team menu does not always let a player join even when they should be able to, or vice versa.

Thank you for your soldier's discipline! See you on the battlegrounds!

About This Game

After 6 years of development, Battle Grounds III (BG3) is the next iteration in the classic franchise which began 17 years ago. It features new graphics, maps, weapons, characters, and gameplay.

BG3 is a multiplayer game based in the American War of Independence. The British Army and its Native American tribal allies engage in battle against the United States Continental Army and the French Expeditionary Force. Take aim and fire muskets, prepare bayonets and take control of the battlefield to succeed in your campaign for final victory. Combat includes long-range rifle marksmanship and brutal close quarters hand-to-hand melee fighting. You will need a mix of first person combat skills and quick-thinking strategy to survive. So prepare yourself to do battle for your side and to meet the enemy head-on. Only one side can be victorious.
  • Choose your soldier. On the British team, play as Regular Infantry, Officer, Hessian Jäger, Iroquois Warrior, Light Infantry, or Grenadier. On the American team, play as Continental Soldier, Officer, Frontiersman, Militia, or French Grenadier.
  • Choose from among 26 period weapons, including muskets, rifles, grenades, swords, and more; customize your uniform.
  • Capture objectives, make a last stand at a fort, or roleplay in line formation.
  • Play among 11 classic, remade decade-old maps, and 8 new maps.
  • Play with up to 80 players at the same time.
  • Fill the battlefield with a new, intelligent bot AI.
