Sid Meier's Civilization V - Civ and Scenario Pack - Polynesia

This is a minor DLC. If you want the Polynesia civilization and you like its perks like I did then its a good buy. But I wouldn't pay full price which is $5.49. I bought it at 75% off and if you do buy this I would advise you wait till its on sale since its not work it otherwise.

This expansion adds a new civ to the game which specializes in early game exploration. But in my expierence the scenario is really fun. With lots of different ways to go at the victory mine is to focus culture and when I get frigates i will attack and destroy anyone who is beating me .

-Quick Review-
The Scenario Pack: Polynesia adds the civilization Polynesia, and the scenario “Paradise Found”, which is a race between four different nations, the first one to adopt all social policies is the winner.

-Detailed breakdown review-
Story: The four playable nations in the Paradise Found scenario are: Samoa, Tahiti, Hiva, and Tonga. (I must confess I'm rather ignorant on the history of this part of the world, but being spurred on by my determination of giving credible and relivant information I did some research.)
Each one of these Polynesia factions are being lead by their founders, the conflict is compressed for simplicity-sake. While the scenario isn't one of the most interesting one's or the most engaging, it is a very unique and effective way of teaching part of the history of the Hawaiian Islands.

The leader for the newly added Polynesian civilization is Kamehameha whom conquered the most of the Hawaiian Islands and established the Kingdom of Hawaii. I cannot describe to you the immense amusement of reading out his name and immediately drawing association to the Dragon Ball “Kamehameha” (かめはめ波) attack!
After doing some research the name makes more sense, in Japanese Kame= Turtle, Hame=Destruction/devastation based off Hametsu, Ha=Wave. To tie it back to the leader, Akira Toriyama named Goku's Attack in Kamehameha's honor after a visit to Hawaii. Kamehameha the Great's full name is actually: “Kalani Paiʻea Wohi o Kaleikini Kealiʻikui Kamehameha o ʻIolani i Kaiwikapu kauʻi Ka Liholiho Kūnuiākea”. You can probably guess for yourself why he's normally just called Kamehameha.

Gameplay: The Polynesian civilization specializes on embarking over oceans immediately at the start of the game, increased site while embarked, having increased strength when near a Moai Statue, and the special unit is Maori Warrior (which replaces the standard Warrior).
They're very strong from the start of the game, if they can take advantage of this it could make all the difference for the rest of the game. The general strategy is to take advantage of gathering up all the Ancient Ruins early in the game, and then grabbing the best city building locations early too.

Achievements: There are two types of achievements with this DLC: Win as each Nation, and get lucky exploring. The exploration achievements are for “Find Austrlia, New Zealand, Hawaii or Easter Island in a random game. (they weren't tough to get, I just had to keep re-rolling the game and making ships.)

Price: Civilization and Scenario Pack: Polynesia is priced at $4.99, Sid Meier's Civilization V: Complete Edition is priced at $49.99, depending on how much time you spend playing Scenarios, this could be a definitely buy or skip. (I grabbed achievements and then left it alone, and the achievements maybe took three or four hours, so it's pretty close to the correct pricing for my personal value system.)

Conclusion: Wow this review took way longer then I was planning on writing about it, especially for some DLC that most people don't even visit the steam store page of anyway. All in all this DLC is pretty good, and I enjoyed playing through it. Hopefully my review didn't miss anything important or make any mistakes on historical details. I did some quick research so it's very possible I've slipped up on some details, I'm sorry in advance, I did my best though!

Aloha! I would like to personally thank the Sid Meier's and 2K team for hearing out this Hawaiian in the CivFanatics forums years ago and finally giving Polynesia representation in the Civilization series. Even though the Polynesian islands were combined into one group rather than separated into their distinct cultures, I've been thrilled to see King Kamehameha, outrigger canoes, and Moai statues in the game. Mahalo nui, thank you so much, for doing this for us.

Civilization V is one of the best games of its kind, but what is there to expect from its downloadable content?

The answer is the same, in this dlc you need to become the most powerful culture in Polynesia among four kingdoms.

You will have the possibility to fight with Maori warriors, Maoi statues and the ability to embark on ocean tiles from the start of the game. [8/10]

Have not yet tried all the other new Civs, but I believe this one has a very strong connection between theme and game mechanics. The Moai statues are just lovely. Test it with a archipelago world and slow gameplay to get good use of the boat advantage!

The Civilization and Scenario Pack: Polynesia DLC for Civilization V contains one civilization, which I have played, and one scenario which I have not played yet. I'll get back to you on that one.

Anyway. Polynesia here is actually a frankly strange conglomeration of multiple South Pacific cultures, so it's only right and proper that they're one of the most powerful culture civilizations in the game. Their unique Moai improvement lets players generate boatloads of culture (and later, tourism) with skillful settlement and placement, making up for any lost production from those coastal tiles.

Meanwhile, their unique ability lets them cross oceans right from the beginning to get the first and best pick of new lands, with their unique unit - a Warrior replacement - letting them conquer and defend colonies from barbarians. It goes without saying that Polynesia benefits the most from Small Continents and Archipelago maps, but thanks to their ocean-crossing ability, playing Polynesia on a Terra map is guaranteed to be entertaining as well. For you, anyway.

It helps that Kamehameha is generally awesome - except if you're going culture in the same game he's in, I suppose - and the unique outrigger canoe graphic for embarked units is nice too.

For a Civ V DLC, I'd say this is pretty decent value overall. Recommended if you didn't get the complete pack.

Polynesia under Kamehameha is a very colorful and tropical civilization. With its capital city at Honolulu and its original units like the Maori warrior, Polynesia is an interesting faction to play as. Don't forget to build the Moai!
