5-minute free breaktime game where you learn some summarised modern history whilst playing as a cat vandalising things. Can't fault it, seems like a great delivery system to me.

The Cat and The Coup is a very short game where you kind of play a history lesson... as a cat. I like history and I love all animals, and I really love games where you get to play as animals. I first got interested in it when I saw the art, which is this really cool style that looks kind of like a scrap book. I was further interested when I saw that you get to play as a cat. It took me 20 minutes to play through it because there aren't any real directions and a couple of the rooms were really confusing for me, in regards to what you had to do to progress. In order to get further into the brief history lesson, you have to interact with the environment in such a way that leads the human to fall out of the room you're in and into the next room. The music in the game, paired with the art and photos, gives it a great atmosphere. I am definitely having my history buff friend play this, just because it was an interesting game. I got to have fun while learning something new. Now if only all history classes were taught like this, I think more kids might pay attention.

Did I mention Nine Inch Nails is on the soundtrack? Because Nine Inch Nails is on the Sondtrack.

Edit: I just wanted to add that the mechanics of the game remind me of The Bridge, so if you played and liked The Bridge, you'll probably enjoy this game.

The Cat and the Coup is a visually arresting, surreal history lesson chronically the life and death of Dr. Mohammed Mossadegh. Half edutainment, half bizarre art project, it's an entirely unique and wonderfully creative 15 minute fall down an abstract rabbit hole, reinforced with the snippets of real world events that somehow only make it all the more unusual. Personally I found it a brilliant experimental experience, though for as odd as it is I can just as easily imagine a dozen entirely different opinions about it, which perhaps says something to how weird a game it is. Thankfully I don't have to decide for you whether to give The Cat and the Coup a look, as it's entirely free and will take just a small portion of your day to complete. At the very least it's almost certainly the oddest use of a Nine Inch Nails song I've ever found, which in itself I find strangely compelling.

I'd recommend it!

Some would say "it's not a game if you can't die", which if false because you can't die in jigsaw games too.
Others may say "it's nothing but a pretty slide/PowerPoint presentation", and that would be true if it wasn't for some interactions you have to do to progress.

So, what is The Cat and the Coup? It's a FREE and brief game that tells us a story. The main focus is in the story, of course, not in fancy gameplay.
You could read a couple of paragraphs in Wikipedia or in a History book, or play this highly illustrated 10-20min game to know the story.
Well, I'd recommend the latter.

This is a very interesting game. It tells the story of Dr. Mohammed Mossadegh, the first Prime Minister of Iran, and you play his black cat. As the cat you lead him through his own story. The graphics are stunning, and it is a bit educational as well. It triggered me to look up more about the past of Iran to understand it a bit more.

It only takes 30 mins and it is free, so I recommend to try it out.

My rating for this game: 7/10.

This game had me at "The Cat". It's a game about Iranian history, simple puzzles, capitalism, and cats. The only questionable part of the former sentence is whether the game is a game or not. It takes about 15 minutes to complete and most of the time is spent reading. Either way, I found it quite enlightening and touching.

Definitely worth playing, mostly to see a different style of interactive media.

The proof that a video game doesn t have to be a game to be impressive.
I would call The Cat and the Coup a masterpiece, even though playing this game isn t challenging or even fun in any other way, then finding the way the truth about what happened is revealed awesome.
And this might be the point. The Cat and the Coup is maybe more art than game. More history lesson than entertainment media. More experiment than the perfection of a certain concept. For this I love The Cat and the Coup.

As it says, it's an informative short chronicle of an Iranian coup in the 1950s. It's portrayed very effectively, with pure symbolism and a surrealist art style. Absolutely fantastic and very interesting. I was moved a lot in 13 minutes.

A really cool way to present a bit of history couched in a bit of gameplay. More games like this on Steam, please.

After completing this game i realized that there is something special about this game, something you cant explain with words. The graphics are beautiful, the gameplay is relaxing and fun, the music is really freaky but still relaxing at the same time so why are there no more games like this? I highly recommend you to try this game out, its a history trip you wont forget.

A great game for just 16 minutes.

The art style is very appealing and it goes really well with the soundtrack, which is really nice by the way.

The story is pretty interesting for just 16 minutes and it's pretty sad.

Wow, this is a masterpiece!
More like this: "Call of Duty", where you play the other side of the story :)

The Cat and the Coup, a beautiful indie game that's part puzzle, part point and click, all acid trip. It's art style is heavily influenced by Terry Gilliam of Monty Python fame, and is effective in expressing the chaos of the "little" tale it has to tell. Be forewarned-the game is surprisingly short (I managed to beat it in four minutes tops), but despite the time constraint, it powerfully conveys the tragic, emoitonally heart-rending real-life tale of Dr. Mohammed Mossadegh, the first democratically elected leader of Iran and the CIA's long struggle to overthrow him.

Such a beautiful little game. I encourage everyone to devote the few minutes of their time it takes to play through it. Personally, I could never pass up the opportunity to try a game that tells the story of the Iranian coup. But this piece of art is unique on its own right in every possible way.

Trippin' balls, man...

But seriously, this has "modern art" written all over it. For those that hate games that are light on gameplay and heavy on metaphor... well, that's exactly what this game is.

It's strictly linear, with no chance for exploration, and there are just a few sorta-puzzles to keep you entertained while you go backwards through time without context. Then, it reverses, and you see the events play out in the proper order in context, with the disguised elements revealed for what they really are.

It's free, so if "a 5-minute game telling the story of the rise of the Shah of Iran" sounds like it might possibly be interesting, there's no reason not to play it.
