What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

Because what players have to say is important. Receiving feedback and gaining support is essential to developing Space Wrangler to its full potential. To achieve this, the game must find its way into the hands of players as soon as possible. This community’s feedback/support will greatly improve and expedite the overall development of the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Plans exist to further develop features, systems, and mechanics for Space Wrangler over the course of a 6 to 12-month period. Space Wrangler will not remain in Early Access for longer than it needs and will exit Early Access upon the completion of all major development goals.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Space Wrangler is designed to be a multi-faceted and dynamic platform that will support various forms of gameplay. Game modes featured will deliver enjoyable and re-playable experiences to a large and diverse audience from casual players to fans of simulation. This version intends to include a few major additions to the game that will compliment all forms of preexisting gameplay and add some new ones.
Multiplayer Support
Space is a dangerous place, get help from friends. Core game modes will support at least 2 players cooperatively playing together online. A new game mode will also be introduced to support a larger server population playing together or against each other.
First Contact Mode
Explore and investigate an unknown sector of space where an unexplained disturbance in space-time has been identified. Observe and interact with a new aspect of our universe, black holes. Venture into them to uncover whatever secrets they hold.
Cinematic Mode
The Universe is beautiful, take a picture. Harness the full power of a robust camera suite to capture or record moments of your gameplay with cinematic quality. This system also enables players to configure their default camera setup at any time during gameplay to create a new perspective to experience the universe from.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game, as it is currently, includes the core features, systems, and mechanics needed to experience the game at a base level. Some experimental elements of the game are partially available so that feedback on them can be given. Be advised, exploring experimental content within the game may change the gameplay experience.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

While in Early Access, the price to purchase Space Wrangler will NOT change. After Early Access, a Full Release price change may occur but is not certain now. Confirmation on a “yes” or “no” for this change will come at a later point when most, if not all, of the development goals are satisfied.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community will have the means to be engaged with every step of development for Space Wrangler while in Early Access. Through official forums, bug trackers, and feedback portals, the community will have various options made available to them to share their thoughts on the game with each other and/or the developer(s). All community platforms will remain accessible and further used after Early Access.”

Dev Blog 16/10/17

With the next update days away, I wanted to talk about it more. These posts will come out regularly and will be a bit more detailed than the Pre-Update posts. Though, they won't necessarily include update relative information all the time. If there is something interesting to talk about dev-wise, it'll be mentioned here.

The update is pretty robust and focuses mainly on gameplay. More types of gameplay will be included along with a revamped system for how you engage in it. The stations around earth will each be host to different forms of gameplay. The stations now feature hangars that will serve as hubs for engaging with the various forms of gameplay. In so many words, you'll dock your ship, preview what you can do at that station then begin engaging with that activity/mission.

Stations also will now serve as spawning positions for the player when they enter the level. From the main menu planet select screen, you will be able to decide which station you want to start at. This makes getting to your choice of gameplay faster and still allows for actual travel between stations once you have spawned into the initially chosen station.

As for some news about something coming to the game shortly that won't be in the next update but most likely the one after it, Earth and its Moon will get a face lift (I think that phrase fits). Both bodies will no longer be flat spherical objects, rather they will have actual topography. The details aren't ready to be disclosed yet, but this will give way to something fun that I think players will enjoy.

Since, I'd rather not spoil everything ahead of time, we will leave it here for now. Overall you can look forward to the previously mentioned stuff a much more filled out game in many aspects. Improved controls, visuals, systems, and more. Stay tuned for the actual update notes which I will post when the update goes live. Cheers!

Pre-Update News #1

Wranglers,

A new update for the game is coming down the pipe and will be released this coming week. The update includes some changes that address optimization and gameplay.

There were a few things I did that before this update that weren't necessarily the best practices when it comes to handling texture and model compression. Pretty much all of these things will be fixed with the update and better performance can be expected.

Gameplay is getting a revamp as far as how you engage with it. Prior to the update, stations involuntarily assigned asteroids to the player to retrieve. This specific aspect of gameplay will now be much more voluntary and selective. Additionally, much more gameplay specific information will be visible and available to the player to improve specifically retrieving asteroids, but also additional game modes that are coming.

Speaking of additional game modes. In the last update, I included the foundation for a new game mode in the form of very large stationary asteroids beside stations. Without revealing too much now, a new game mode will be introduce with this update that will focus around those. More info on that will come with the actual update announcement.

There is still a lot that I have planned to be brought into the game in the coming weeks, so you can expect much more content coming soon. More announcements like this will also be made more often to keep everyone up-to-date on development.

Cheers!

Special Notice

Word of Warning

Just a word of warning to those out there looking to blaze through the cosmos. Space Wrangler is a game that lets you play with physics to the point that the results you experience can vary, to say the least. The game can handle quite a bit, but if you push the forces hard enough you will potentially break something in it. But that's OK, we will make it better over time.

Any input/feedback on experienced results is more than welcome and can be expressed on the community discussion boards. Fortunately at the moment, I haven't made the player damageable in the game. So when you hurl yourself into the moon accelerating at multiple times the acceleration of gravity on Earth, you won't even walk away with a scratch.

Enjoy!
