What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We know that the critical eye of the Steam Early Access community will be the perfect source for actionable feedback on our game prior to launch. Every recipe needs a few iterations to get just right, and we hope that with more people giving us feedback we can tune the game's flavor into the most delicious, strategic tower defense game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“About 2 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“For the full release, we are planning on iterating on the visuals and sound, more finely tuned balance, and generally more polish. Some of the things we are planning include:
  • Completing the animations on enemies that don’t have them
  • Making the defenses demonstrate their defensive power with visual clarity and satisfying animations as they decimate those pesky bugs
  • Environment art iterations to bring more life to the world
We will also be looking to our players to help us identify additional things we need to polish and iterate on.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“All of the levels, defenses, enemies, and key features are playable in the game. Much of the sound is placeholder, and the art and animation is a work in progress, especially the elements found in the later levels. Additionally, the balance needs some tweaks, and there are probably some bugs lurking around.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The game will be on sale at 40% off for the first week of Early Access! After that, the game will return to full price, with the possibility of other occasional discounts down the road.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We encourage all of our players who have feedback or suggestions to post on our Steam forum, or drop us a line at Additionally, we have included a brief survey at the end of each level for players to provide us with some immediate feedback on their experiences. Player feedback will help us prioritize our work over the next months, hone the game’s balance, and help us identify rough edges in need of polish and bugs that we may have missed.”

First major update!

We just deployed our first major update for Defend the Cake. Here's what we've been working on:

  • Worms now spawn in Score Attack! Each Spice collected in Score Attack will add a +0.25x multiplier to your score per second. Unused or uncollected Spice does not carry over into Score Attack.
  • Environment art update
  • Additional Wheat has been added to the following levels:
    - Let it Bee
    - Metamorphosis
    - Crabby Road
    - Webslingers
    - Killer Queen
Score Attack Replay saves have been reset for these levels.
  • Tweaked the Score Attack spawns on some levels.
  • Removed the Display setting. You can change the display the game runs on by moving the game window to that display.
  • Made the error text in tooltips easier to read.
  • Hooked up upgrade states for Defenses. These are just rough texture swaps, more to come later!
  • All enemies that get hit by a Watermelon will now display some hit FX.
  • Removed the flame icon from Defenses. Hooked up some new stuff to better illustrate the Power Up cooldown.
  • Performance optimizations.
Bug Fixes
  • The “Place the Cake” hint will no longer show up when you replay score attack for a level.
  • Watermelons should now do a better job of hitting Worms.
  • Upgraded Cheese Knives will now properly apply the damage over time effect on Power Up.
  • Cheese Knives will now properly rotate to face their target on Power Up.
  • Fixed issue where the score/sec would jump down for the moment between when a flyer grabbed a slice from the Cake and when the flyer arrived at the end of the ground path.
  • Toast walls will no longer pop up when rewinding to the previous day.
  • Fixed some sprite layering issues.
  • Fixed an issue where a Butterfly would not path correctly if the Caterpillar reached an empty cake and turned around before turning into a Butterfly.
  • Fixed text overlap on the new thing unlocked UI.
  • Fixed an issue where death animations would freeze if the enemy was stunned.
  • Spiders will no longer fire webs while carrying cake.

About This Game

From a group of former Riot & Blizzard developers comes the most delicious tower defense game! Help Eggperor Shellemane and the Eggbirds keep their cakes safe from an onslaught of persistent insects. The game begins when you place your tasty cake castle on the map. Choose carefully; there are armies of ants on their way to steal a slice! After that, it’s time to plan your strategy. Build your maze to outsmart the mischievous ants and protect your prized cake. Use watermelon slingshots and frosting guns to thwart the onslaught of bees, snails, and ants on scooters!

Key Features:
  • Tower Defense that requires strategic thinking and tactical timing to defend your Cake from an onslaught of hungry bugs
  • Place your Cake, you decide where the path will lead
  • Strategically shape the path using Toast Walls, and create a maze for the enemy bugs
  • 18 challenging levels, each introduces a new enemy to contend with
  • 6 unique defenses with 2 upgrades each
  • Day/Night cycle: Take as much time as you like to plan your defenses during the Day, then when you’re ready, fend off waves of bugs in real time at Night by Powering Up your defenses

  • All the cake you can eat... WAIT NO!
