A truly horrifying game.

When I started this game I had no idea what I was in for. I knew, from simply browsing youtube gaming channels, that this was a popular game, but I had no idea as to why. I watch clips of videos where people would scream while playing the game, so I simply assumed it was a jump scare game that sought to exploit the trend that was going on during the time, similar to Slenderman and so on.

I can tell you though, after completing the game, that this is not the case. Does this game scare the crap out of you and make you whimper like a cancer ridden puppy?

Yeah, it does that.

But it does so much more. The story is amazing and enticing. Few games are able to get me to read all of the back story that they have laying around. Bioshock is another example of this, I spent considerable time to seek out the recordings in that game to get the entire story, that s how much I loved it. I experienced that same feeling in this game.

This game also presents many puzzles, an element I did not know was part of this game. The puzzles, though mostly simple, are fun and rewarding.

The game's level and sound design are also marvelous I should mention. The terror of the beast lurking around the corner would be nothing if the beast had the sound of a rubber duck, and the corner had the appearance of a bus stop. No, this game seeks to draw out every sense of fear in you. The only moments of relief you get are in those brief moments of narration, savour those I tell you. (A very similar feeling to F.E.A.R.)

I won't drag on here. It's a terrifically terrifying game.

Though if you're a homosexual and open about it, I don't recommend buying this game, it'll put you right back in the closet.

I don't really get the hype of this game, for me it was average. SOmething to do when you are bored.
I did not find it scary - I mean, come on, if I play it in the dead of night, all alone, it should at least make me afraid of going to the bathroom or something :-) Although the story itself is really sick and made me hate myself - aka Daniel quite a bit.
I would recommend buying it only on sale - the playthrough takes only about 10 hours, so imo it is not worth the full prize.

Bought it four years ago and was too scared to play it. I finally picked it up two days ago, and I'm already done! I do recommend getting over whatever mental block you have to finish this game, it's not as scary as it might have seemed starting out, the main issue is puzzles with no clear solution, which is easily solvable with a quick trip to an online walkthrough text file.

Now I have to get through Outlast...

First of all, The main campaign for this game is great. Spooky, unsettling, full of jumpscares and more a explorative world rather than a point a to point b survive to win. While I can't exactly go into a huge paragraph of detail, I will point this out.

THE MODDED LEVELS FOR THIS GAME MAKE IT HIGHLY WORTH BUYING.

You need to go to other sites for them, but each custom story I have played, long or short has been greatly satisfying, terrorfying and makes one game worth dozens. If you're a fan of Horrors or browsing player created content, this is the game for you.

At first, my old computer couldn't run this game and I was sorely dissapointed. I've always wanted to play this game and experience the horror for myself. But now, three years later with a new laptop I'm finally able to play and I must confess.

It was worth the wait.

My first playthrough is still ongoing, but I would reccomend it to anyone and everyone!

I actually completed this game tonight. I have owned it for 5 years, and started it now and again, but got only so far and then thought "well, thats enough for me".

Well, I braved it. I said nope, I'm doing it this time. And I am bloody glad I did.

Despite being 6 years old now, Amnesia: The Dark Descent is still a solid, good looking, great sounding, first person horror game. You wake up in castle with no recollection of where you are and why you are here, but you soon learn more as you descent further into the deep bowels of this forbidden place. Along the way, you have some relatively simple puzzles to overcome, while the odd puzzle or two present more of a challenge.

And it is true what they say, this game is just plain scary. I truly felt fear in this game like no other game has accomplished, and this is achieved by a combination of jumps, creepiness, fear of the unknown, fear of being chased, panic, a gloomy atmosphere and some utterly brilliant audio work.

I can't describe the gameplay and the mechanics without underselling the game at the same time. The only way to know what it is like is to just play it, and trust me on this - it really is one of the scariest things you'll play.

Highly recommended.

Yeah im terrible at horror games, you see those 9 hours I have played of this, they are me at the beginning of the game, the furthest I have gotten is when the elevator breaks and your stuck in an area of pitch blackness, really when I say I am bad I mean it, I will complete it eventually and probably record it I might regret saying that, but from what I have played its a great game, so get it if you enjoy horror.

I always thought this game was overhyped and well, dumb. Man was I wrong (and stupid). While I have not finished the game, the short amount of time I have played, has been good. Real good. The game is pretty scary with a great atmosphere and I feel like most of the terror and tension comes from the superb sound design. I have been frightened multiple times, just from gusts of wind or creaking doors/floors. I keep meaning to play more of it, but I think (subconsciously) I'm too scared. So in the likely case I never finish the game, from what I have seen...a solid 9.5/10

OH plus there are a ton of custom stories you can download and play. "A Cowards Debt" is great.

I got the game when it was free; the fact I didn't pay for it influences a little bit my judgment. Not a lot, but it still does. The game itself was interesting, but I expected a lot more from it since it was very popular some time ago (well, popular among my friends and YouTube). A lot of people could swear it is the best horror game ever made, and it is the spookiest thing ever, that every night they cry because they had nightmares of Mr. Face's cute face.

I don't think it is the case. I don't really play horror video games, as I prefer to watch movies in the same genre. Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Slender: The Eight Pages are the only games I played that are classified as '' survival horror ''. Now, to get back to Amnesia, it wasn't really ‘‘survival’’ or ‘‘horror’’. After some minutes the soundtrack started to be boring. Same noises repeated.

The game play was alright; the oil system was nice, as I had to be sure I wasn't using too much (but again, was more than enough to get through the game). The hardest level was the water one, as I had to repeat it many times (because I am poop) before doing it right. The puzzles weren't too hard, a little bit long to find out what to do, but once you understood the first ones, the others become much easier.

To summarize, was an okay game. I just lost 5 hours of my life. Hours I could have used to eat Doritos and drink Mountain Dew, but whatever. If you can get it for free, I recommend it. If not, I wouldn't buy it for more than 5$.

A sweet, super short and absolutely spoiler-free review and opinion on the game Amnesia: The Dark Descent by Frictional Games.

Close your door, shut down the lights and let the darkness sink in... The only visible light source being the computer monitor. The most rewarding experience will only be achievable in total darkness. Amnesia: The Dark Descent will take care of the rest.

As a horror game this gets a lot of things right with just only a handful of annoyances mixed in. The game is definitely recommendable to anyone who is able to handle a lot of spooks and many more jump scares.

The game goes even as far as planting some philosophical and truly thought provoking concepts in players head. So after one has beaten the game the memories about the “descending” aren’t necessarily the scary bits and pieces but the moments when the thoughts about “right” and “wrong” start to have debates in players mind. That’s perhaps the most rewarding aspect of the whole packet.

My IGN-score: 8.5 / 10

SPOILERS (for those who really want to have a ‘clean’ experience)

***

Pros:

- enjoyable surroundings
- atmosphere
- the dance of light and darkness (to put it nicely ^_^)

Cons:

- low resolution textures (the game is nearly seven years old so hardly surprising)
- not enough notes, diaries etc to read (completely subjective viewpoint)
- less appealing in the end (ok, this one is kinda a stretch {as I said there isn't much to criticise})

Summary

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a first person exploration/puzzle game with heavy emphasis on atmosphere. If you're looking for an unsettling 7-8 hour horror experience that doesn't rely on jump scares, this game should be an obvious choice.

In detail

Without giving anything away, the game is about exploring a dark castle and the story is delivered in flashbacks and in random notes and diary entries you find scattered around. Apart from one particular puzzle towards the end, majority of them didn't take me too much time to figure out. The character makes helpful notes when you explore places and you always have either a new area to explore or a note/memento/diary entry that guides you what is needed to achieve next.

There are enemies, environmental hazards and fall damage that tick away your health, but it can be restored by using potions. However, the more interesting game mechanic is the sanity meter; Losing sanity is tied to various things like looking at creepy things, staying too long in the dark etc. and solving puzzles restores it. Going insane affects on how the character controls and causes all kinds of creepy visual effects.

Most of the tension and horror comes from the sound design, being in the dark unable to defend yourself and losing your sanity. There are a lot of optional light sources, but you need to manage a resource to decide which of them you actually want to ignite. Rest of the time you're relying on a lantern with a limited oil supply and it forces you to move at a quicker pace than you might be comfortable with.

I almost gave up playing this 2-3 hours in, after a couple of the first major sections, thinking I had seen all it had to offer. I started writing this review at that point basing it around the start of the game and what I had seen so far. Thankfully I didn't quit as the scariest stuff was right around the corner.

Recommendation

I think the game should've maybe been an hour or two shorter as I found it losing me a bit towards the very end. Still, I can appreciate the things it does get right and give it a solid recommendation. There aren't too many games around that manage to get under your skin like Amnesia: TDD does. For a better experience, make sure to at least use a proper gamma setting. I also recommend playing in the dark and possibly during night time, without distractions.
