We're currently going through an age where the horror genre is dying out as they're getting repetitive, at least for horror games that occupy the Steam market and Steam Greenlight. However, when people thought that there was no hope, Amnesia: The Dark Descent decided to come on in and show everybody how a horror game should be done.

In Amnesia: The Dark Descent, the main thing that makes it a truly great horror experience is the fact that it makes you defenseless as you have nothing to defend yourself against the horrors that may lie inside the castle. All you have is your trusty oil lantern, which keeps on running out of oil and forces you to find more. Your only way of truly escaping these monsters is to hide from them by using the darkness and the hiding places to your advantage. However, if you spend too long in the darkenss, it can affect your sanity, so you can't spend too long in the darkness. This is a great way to experience true horror, making you feel defenceless against the monsters that litter the castle, that are rigorously trying to hunt you down. It's rare you feel this sort of way in horror games nowadays, which is why it's so refreshing to see it being taken into effect in this game. There are also some puzzles that are thrown at the player, none of these puzzles are difficult per say as long as you've been paying attention to the notes and hints that have been left around for you, however some of these puzzles feel a bit tedious and unnecessary to add in.

The story of Amnesia is that you play as Daniel who has woken in the castle with no recolection of anything at all, you as the player must tread through the castle, picking up notes, piecing back together Daniel's memory, avoiding the enemies around the castle and foiling a maniacal scheme that is set to be carried out. I always like the sort of games that throw this sort of plot at the player because it makes you feel immersedin the role as the main character knows as much as the player does and he learns along with the player. However besides the set up of it, the rest of the plot doesn't feel that special and, I'm not going to revela spoilers here or anything, but by the time I reached the end of the game, I fealt like I had more questions than answers and for the last 20 minutes, due to the story, I fealt like I wasn't really playing the game I thought I was going to be playing when I first started it up, if you know what I mean.

This is an indie development company and I was amazed by the graphics when the game started. They went into lots of detail when designing the game. The lighting work that is done on the windows of the castle is great, the walls look really god and detailed, even the monster look quite good. The only complaint I have is that some of the creatures that scatter across the ground at times look like they were made of an ugly blob, but that's just nitpicking.

The sound in this game is brilliant. The noises that occupy the castle sound terrifyingly real, especially with headphones, it really helps you immerse yourself in the world that this game is creating.

I really enjoyed my time with Amnesia: The Dark Descent as it took risks that other horror games dare not take and did it with a terrific pay off

Pros
+ Terrifying
+ Good gameplay elements
+ Good graphics
+ Great sounds
+ Pretty good story

Cons
- Tedious puzzles
- Got a bit sci-fi near the end

Final verdict: 9/10

since i see it on special and it reminded me why i dislike it.

as much i like a good horror game, this is not one of them. the atmosphere is nice but i got bored playing this. no seriously, i did not get scared once or even feel scared. i do not see this as a scary game when all you have to do is walk slowly and listen, look around in advance where you can hide in case a monster comes at you. i only died once. i had more thrills with splinter cell than this installment.
also what i really hate is how the protagonist freaks out when you are for too long in the dark (even though he still can see pretty well once his eyes adjust to the dark) or when looking at a monster for too long.
I AM THE PLAYER. I DECIDE WHEN I GET SCARED. this is the biggest aggravating part of the game.

i want to look at the monster to time my escape, but not possible if our hero freaks out when he looks at it for 2 seconds and the monster therefor hears you.
his psycho vision is creative but laughable than being scary.

nice idea for having no weapons and not being able to fight back, but scary.....not even close. i wish back then i could request a refund.

There is an incredible slow burn for the start. All I can recommend is to not give up on it. Yes, it will be boring if you're not the sort to get into self-exploration titles. Once it picks up though, the game delivers on the frightening elements people give it credit for.

With that said, play the game in the dark and at night. Seriously, even after it picks up, still feels boring if you're playing it on your couch with daylight shining through.

10/10

Honestly, the best horror game I have seen. A really immersive, terrifying horror game with a pretty good story and little to no jumpscares. The fact that users can create their own stories means you don't just have the same boring story over and over again, but you can play custom ones to your liking.

If there was any game I could wipe from my memory as to experience it anew again and again, it would be The Dark Descent. Despite having a thousand let's-plays on YouTube for every hair on your head, I still believe this game is hideously underrated.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent has nailed down the most important quality in any horror game in a masterful way that I have not seen since Resident Evil 4, and that quality is that the fear associated with gameplay is carefully trickled into the player's head through the musical score, voice acting and environments.

The voice acting is tastefully theatrical, yet believable. Sam Mowry's talent as the voice of our antagonist goes a long way toward paintaing an image of a formidable, developed foe. Richard Topping's voice as the protagonist potently reflects the player's fear while still managing to pull us into a false sense of safety in the game's many story flashbacks (oops, spoilers!), before shoving us back into the crucible of terror that is this game.

The graphics are as enjoyable as they are cohesive. As mentioned in the commentary playthrough available to the player, a great deal of consideration was invested in assuring that the visual elements of the game would add to the experience. I will omit detail on the topic for the sake of avoiding spoilers.

The ominous nature of the musical score is unparalleled. Whether the environment was meant to instill a peaceful mood in one of the hub levels or to generate a horrifying ambience to leave you looking over your shoulder in your own home, it does it right.

This game is horrifying and beautiful. Synonyms to be sure... if you're a true horror fan.

Easily a 9 out of 10 game. Avid horror fans have no excuse not to purchase or wishlist this item. Those who are rightfully skeptical of the horror genre as a whole have the entirety of my enthusiasm: Give this game a shot.

Lights on, sound off. Monster poped out. Outcome the same.
Game is good, not that scary. Got used to it after a while. Stupid lightbulb broke, complete dark and steam message recieved. Running out of the pants..

All in all. Story is great.

10/10 would ♥♥♥♥ my pants again.
