What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Dropzone has been in development for two years and in closed-beta for the past 6 months. We see our launch on Steam Early Access as simply the next stage in the game’s development, widening the number of players (and increasing the number of games to play!) who will be able to play and suggest improvements/additions to the game to make Dropzone the game you’d like to play. In the past 6 months we’ve honed and polished the core gameplay, and established a close relationship with our existing beta players. We look forward to continued iteration while building more ties across the spectrum of our community.

Early Access is the perfect option for us at this point. Our production team loves to iterate, in fact our whole development process is designed for it; for example, we patched every week during CBT, which equated to roughly 25 patches in total. Early Access will be the best way for us to learn how to further improve our game and address the needs and desires of a larger community.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We anticipate that we will be in Early Access for several months as we add and adjust features based on feedback from the community.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Aside from additional content (pilots, gear, maps, and so forth), much of our focus in Early Access will be spent building out additional PvE and competitive play elements of the game based on player feedback at all skill levels (casual, amateur and pro gamers). Ranked Play will be an early addition. While the heart of Dropzone is a competitive 1v1 game, we all want to be able to play with our friends and to explore modes of play that go beyond purely 1v1 competitive play (some of which you will see in the upcoming release). As we learn what players most like, we intend to double down on those areas.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We spent a good amount of time in Closed Beta making sure we could start with a polished core experience. We built a custom engine for Dropzone , the Sparkle Engine (the 3rd game engine this team has built over the years), and we believe the “feel” of the game is excellent. Performance is generally good when settings are adjusted properly for older computers but we need to do a better and more intuitive job of adjusting those settings, including dynamically. There are some areas, such as Crafting and Daily Tournaments, which are functional, but haven’t received what we would consider a final polish pass. We currently have 4 of the 5 planned Classes available with 3 Pilots each, 2 1v1 maps, 1 2v2 map, and 120 types of Gear representing the abilities players can configure. During Early Access, a 5th class will be added to the game, along with more pilots, more gear, Ranked Play, pilot skins and other vanity items that will allow you to customize the look of your game. You can also expect to see features and items suggested by you, our community.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Dropzone was Build to be a Free to Play game and as such we plan to keep it Free to Play beyond Early Access.
We might explore the option of offering specific bundles or additional content via DLCs in the future.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“At Sparkypants, we have a special way of developing a game with Dropzone’s scope. When we started development on the game, we had a prototype running within a few weeks. The entire studio would play the game together each morning, a process we creatively call the “Daily Game.” From that play session, we would make a list of things to add, change, remove, and we’d try to get as many of them done for the next day’s Daily Game. This process drove development, kept us seeing the game as players rather than only as developers and encouraged us to create a new “release” every day.

Fast forward to today and we still do a Daily Game and, during Closed Beta, we typically have a new significant release every week. Our existing Closed Beta community has been invaluable in providing feedback and helping us focus development and balance the game. And now it’s time to extend this idea to a larger community of players. We have a saying at Sparky, “It doesn’t mean **** unless it’s in the Daily Game.” Once we’re in Early Access that will be, “It doesn’t mean **** until it’s in the hands of the community.” To make that happen, we may start with occasionally live-streaming the Daily Games (DGs) of select features, pilots, maps, or whatever when they are close to completion, and then build from there.”

Gameplay Notes

Gameplay Modes
  • Account level requirements to unlock gameplay modes have changed
    • Team 3v3 vs humans is now available immediately for players
    • 1v1 Ranked is now available at level 10 instead of level 15
    • Solo Skirmish -> VS AI (Player VS Player) is now available immediately
  • An Experience Selection screen has been added to the game that allows players to choose their level of experience with RTS and MOBA games
    • “Beginner” will lead the player through the 3-mission tutorial experience, which should last <15 minutes
    • “Experienced” will lead the player through a lighter, 2-mission tutorial experience, which should last <10 minutes
  • Feature Tours have been added to certain sections of the game (WIP)
    • Feature Tours are quick, text-based guides to walk you through new features, giving you all the important information you need to know
      • The Builder Tour starts the first time a player clicks the BUILD menu
  • Kavash Aggro Changes
    • Once a Hive has a target, it should consider all potential targets within its leash range. This fixes behavior where a Hive would continue targeting the same unit even though there was a unit closer
    • Boss should wake up immediately when attacked, instead of a delay. Added a 2000ms delay between when the boss battle ends due to leashing and when the healing starts
  • Vision Rules
    • Auto-attacks and unit targeted abilities will grant vision of the attacking unit if the defender cannot see them (I.E. the attacker is in the fog of war)
    • This vision is centered on the attacker's position at the time of release
    • It lasts for 2s and has an 8.5m radius.
Gear Changes
  • Core Sight (Sensor Software)
    • Now grants the Rig's team vision for 10s in a 50m radius around the uplink whenever the owning Rig uploads a Core
Miscellaneous Notes
  • Progression Screen (WIP)
    • The Player Profile has been updated to give players a clearer sense of progression
    • Upcoming rewards will be shown, as well as the goal that needs to be achieved to earn them (I.E. Next profile level, next match victory, next Pilot Level, etc.)
    • Nearest Pilots to leveling will be shown (I.E. The 3 pilots closest to earning their next level, and the amount of experience needed for them to reach the next level)
    • Player Leveling will be shown as well as the experience needed to attain the next Profile Level
    • Ranking status (1v1, 3v3, etc.)
    • Clicking certain item in this page should take you to the appropriate screen for more information
      • Clicking your player emblem will take you to the Player Emblem page
      • Clicking Pilots should open their Details Page
      • Clicking the 1v1 Ranked area should open either a Provisional Games view or your Ranked status, etc.
  • Match Results
    • The Match Results screen has received updates to provide clearer information about the match as well as earned rewards
    • The Match Results screen shown on Tutorial completion should now show the earned rewards and unlocks
    • The Match Results screen now features more information to celebrate the match and how players fared
      • In 1-Rig Team vs Team games, each player will receive a Title based on their performance
      • In 3-Rig Player vs Player games, each pilot will receive a Title based on their performance
      • In 3 or 4 player Infestation matches and 3-Rig 2v2 games, only the player’s best pilot will be shown, receiving a Title based on their performance
    • The Match Results screen still features detailed stats tabs in addition to these new changes
    • Rewards earned from matches are still shown after returning to the Main Menu
  • Post-Match Chat
    • There is now a Post-Match chat available in the Match Results screen
    • This is an ALL chat and is available in 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3
  • The Boss now has heal FX
  • The low health VO for Summoners is now triggered when they reach 40% remaining health
Bug Fixes
  • Fixed an issue where players could override camera pan portions of the tutorial missions by using the camera center command
  • Fixed an issue where Objective hover tooltips could be shown in Drafting sequences before the Objectives were in place
  • Fixed an issue where Plasma Rifle’s FX did not match the animation played when activated in the Builder
  • Fixed an issue where entering and leaving Test Squad would result in the Quickmatch UI disappearing
  • Fixed an issue where the utility slot hit box would slightly overlap with the Special Move hit box when it was selected
  • Fixed an issue where a Gunner that used stealth plating within an enemy’s detection range would not be properly shown as detected
  • Fixed an issue where the Level Requirement text for 1v1 Unranked cited the wrong level
  • Fixed an issue where an AI match could not be resumed if it was paused and received a match confirmation check that was missed
  • Fixed an issue where the Guided Bot Match (Match Basic tutorial) timer would begin counting down before the player had progressed through all of the beginning pop up messages
  • Fixed an issue where kills earned by a Summoner Pilot’s summoned units would not count towards the Rig’s final kill count
  • Fixed an issue where Recon did not have spawn FX when switched to in the Builder or in the Draft of a match
  • Fixed an issue where the matchseeking bar was not updated and removed if the queue was cancelled by a party member
  • Fixed an issue where the matchseeking bar was not displaying in Solo AI matches and Pilot Training missions
  • Fixed an issue where casting abilities with quickcast settings on top of the ping tooltip would cause issues
  • Fixed an issue where Multiqueue checkboxes could be toggled while searching when an opposing player timed out on the match confirmation check
  • Fixed an issue where the 3v3 Match Type was displaying string text in the Watch Menu
  • Fixed an issue where the Kavash auto-attack animation did not transition back to idle immediately after completing
  • Fixed an issue where health bars in older replays would display incorrect health levels when the units took damage
  • Fixed an issue where pings were appearing at the center of the map when loading into Test Squad
  • Fixed an issue where Academy video audio would continue to play if Esc was pressed to return to the previous menu
  • Fixed an issue where the 3v3 Match Results graph would split into separate lines when objectives were earned
  • Fixed an issue where entering queue through the Play Menu did not uncheck queue options that were picked the last time you were queued
  • Minor localization fixes and updates
  • Minor SFX fixes and updates
Known Issues
  • AVG antivirus software may incorrectly flag the Dropzone client as malicious. We have reached out to them to whitelist the client. In the meantime, you should be able to manually allow your antivirus software to allow the Dropzone client to run
  • There are known issues with words bleeding outside of their bounding boxes for every language other than English. Fixes are on the way
  • Locking Observer slots in Custom Matches only works when both slots are empty
  • The Private Match setting only works when the game is already created, so someone can join in-between
  • Hive Link does not have a cast ring around hives to show where the ability can be cast
  • The ‘Easy Pickings’ achievement does not count Hives killed by a teammate towards the goal
  • Global Chat does not reflect your changed name until you have restarted the game
  • Party members that did not initiate a seek will see incorrect checkboxes sometimes (WIP)

We look forward to your feedback!
