Why Early Access?

“Dropzone has been in development for two years and in closed-beta for the past 6 months. We see our launch on Steam Early Access as simply the next stage in the game’s development, widening the number of players (and increasing the number of games to play!) who will be able to play and suggest improvements/additions to the game to make Dropzone the game you’d like to play. In the past 6 months we’ve honed and polished the core gameplay, and established a close relationship with our existing beta players. We look forward to continued iteration while building more ties across the spectrum of our community.

Early Access is the perfect option for us at this point. Our production team loves to iterate, in fact our whole development process is designed for it; for example, we patched every week during CBT, which equated to roughly 25 patches in total. Early Access will be the best way for us to learn how to further improve our game and address the needs and desires of a larger community.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We anticipate that we will be in Early Access for several months as we add and adjust features based on feedback from the community.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Aside from additional content (pilots, gear, maps, and so forth), much of our focus in Early Access will be spent building out additional PvE and competitive play elements of the game based on player feedback at all skill levels (casual, amateur and pro gamers). Ranked Play will be an early addition. While the heart of Dropzone is a competitive 1v1 game, we all want to be able to play with our friends and to explore modes of play that go beyond purely 1v1 competitive play (some of which you will see in the upcoming release). As we learn what players most like, we intend to double down on those areas.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We spent a good amount of time in Closed Beta making sure we could start with a polished core experience. We built a custom engine for Dropzone , the Sparkle Engine (the 3rd game engine this team has built over the years), and we believe the “feel” of the game is excellent. Performance is generally good when settings are adjusted properly for older computers but we need to do a better and more intuitive job of adjusting those settings, including dynamically. There are some areas, such as Crafting and Daily Tournaments, which are functional, but haven’t received what we would consider a final polish pass. We currently have 4 of the 5 planned Classes available with 3 Pilots each, 2 1v1 maps, 1 2v2 map, and 120 types of Gear representing the abilities players can configure. During Early Access, a 5th class will be added to the game, along with more pilots, more gear, Ranked Play, pilot skins and other vanity items that will allow you to customize the look of your game. You can also expect to see features and items suggested by you, our community.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Dropzone was Build to be a Free to Play game and as such we plan to keep it Free to Play beyond Early Access.
We might explore the option of offering specific bundles or additional content via DLCs in the future.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“At Sparkypants, we have a special way of developing a game with Dropzone’s scope. When we started development on the game, we had a prototype running within a few weeks. The entire studio would play the game together each morning, a process we creatively call the “Daily Game.” From that play session, we would make a list of things to add, change, remove, and we’d try to get as many of them done for the next day’s Daily Game. This process drove development, kept us seeing the game as players rather than only as developers and encouraged us to create a new “release” every day.

Fast forward to today and we still do a Daily Game and, during Closed Beta, we typically have a new significant release every week. Our existing Closed Beta community has been invaluable in providing feedback and helping us focus development and balance the game. And now it’s time to extend this idea to a larger community of players. We have a saying at Sparky, “It doesn’t mean **** unless it’s in the Daily Game.” Once we’re in Early Access that will be, “It doesn’t mean **** until it’s in the hands of the community.” To make that happen, we may start with occasionally live-streaming the Daily Games (DGs) of select features, pilots, maps, or whatever when they are close to completion, and then build from there.”

Patch Notes Early Access v2355

Greetings Commanders! This week's patch will release on July 20th and is a bit of a game changer! Cross-Mode queue is finally here and as you might have seen on some of our other broadcast channels, the broken transmission we mentioned the other week was from our new Sniper pilot, SHRAPNEL! See below for all the details!

Gameplay Notes
  • One Queue to Rule Them All
    • Our Cross-Mode Multi-Queue system is here!
      • 1v1 and 3v3 queues have been combined for Standard (Unranked) games
      • Players now have the option to seek for games where they control 1, 2, or 3 rigs
      • Players can match up with other players of different combinations. For example, a player controlling 3 rigs can match with three players controlling 1 rig each, or even one player controlling 1 rig and one player controlling 2 rigs
      • Ranked play modes remain at 1v1 or 3v3
      • Ranked queue tab also lists your current REP per mode
    • Party Restrictions
      • Parties of 3 are only able to seek for 1 Rig control
      • Parties of 2 are able to seek for 1 Rig and/or 2 Rig control. If only 2 Rig is selected by the initiator, 2 Rig control is given to the initiator and 1 Rig control is given to the party member. If both are selected and a third player is not found in a reasonable time comparative to MMR, the above rules follow, otherwise the third player joins the team and all three players control 1 rig each
  • Masteries
    • 3 Rig Mastery has now been renamed to Multi-Rig Mastery. Any quests or scenarios in Multi-Rig Mastery can be completed using 2 or 3 rigs

Miscellaneous Notes
  • The Multi-Queue UI has been changed and cleaned up to support the Cross-Mode addition
    • Standard and Ranked modes have their own tabs
    • A checkbox to allow searching both Standard and Ranked at the same time has been added
  • The Pilot grid in the Builder now had tabs for 1 Rig, 2 Rigs, 3 Rigs and are connected to how many rigs are present on your dropships:
    • This release will default the selection to 1 Rig as most players play with 1 Rig
    • Defaulting to 1 Rig will also help train new players, letting them discover 2 and 3 rig control when they are more comfortable
  • Hovering over a pilot in the Builder now shows their animated full portrait
  • The Watch menu has been updated to include “Unranked”, “1v1 Ranked”, and “3v3 Ranked”
  • Team vs Team in Custom Lobby now has “Ranked Style Draft” support
  • Boss Buff effect around and above the rig has been updated
  • Status effect icons at the top of the Command Grid have been tweaked
  • Small polish tweaks to the Command Grid have been added
Bug Fixes
  • Fixed an issue where leaving the Draft was not queue penalizing players
  • Fixed an issue where the Mastery data record system for 1 Rig and 3 Rig was inverted
  • Fixed an issue where Turbine’s Special Move was only reducing his health by 4HP/sec instead of 22HP/sec
  • Fixed an issue where Surge Amplifier was not triggering Cortex’s passive
  • Fixed an issue where using Paradigm Shift on a flying Sniper while over a chasm would render the Sniper stuck
  • Fixed an issue where Hives that were casting spells where not maintaining the aggro of its target during the full spell cast
  • Fixed an issue where Infestation waves would start and end within a second or two if the user was idle
  • Fixed an issue where the Boss’s chain-lightning attack was attacking enemies outside of its range
  • Fixed an issue where Laser Lens was doing no damage if the projectile was released and the rig was killed before the projectile impacted the enemy
  • Fixed an issue where the gear card for Atomic Welder did not state that it heals 5HP per slag stack
  • Fixed an issue where hitting ESCAPE as the Watch menu was loading would overlay the Main Menu on top of the Watch screen and eventually in Draft
  • Fixed an issue where AFK or Abandoning players were unable to chat in post-match results chat. We allow this to give a player a chance to explain themselves if desired
  • Fixed an issue where Solo matches that were interrupted and auto-saved, where no getting accurate gear level data sent to them when resuming the saved game
  • Fixed an issue where the new HUD was not being hidden properly in Replays when unticking the HUD checkbox or when holding down the hotkey
  • Various localization fixes
Known Issues
  • Locking Observer slots in Custom Matches only works when both slots are empty
  • The Private Match setting only works when the game is already created, so someone can join in-between
  • Hive Link does not have a cast ring around hives to show where the ability can be cast
  • Global Chat does not reflect your changed name until you have restarted the game
  • Due to the new leveling system, older replays will be using observer information that is out of date. A replay wipe will be in the near future, so we suggest video capturing any replays you would like to save

So there it is! Lots of juicy changes and a bunch of new gear with our newest Sniper. Remember, Sniper 3 comes out pretty soon as well so be on the lookout.
