Roadmap: What to expect in the coming month

Hi everyone,

We are extremely happy at the positive feedback we've been getting from players and the press, and incredibly motivated to keep making the game better thanks to the critical feedback from some players. To anyone who has stayed with us since the early days when the game was still on Early Access, you'll know that we are committed to making Terroir better through your feedback and continued support.

Having said that, we believe you guys deserve at the very least a sneak peek into the content we're working on for future updates. First thing's first - the next update. Some time next week, hopefully before the 21st or 22nd of November, we'll be releasing a very large update with a lot of new content and features. These include:

  • A Wine Log, which will show you details of all the wines you've ever bottled, their rating, their price and their characteristics and flavors.
  • A progress bar showing the passing of time per month - that means you'll get an indication of how long you have left before the next month arrives.
  • Two new grape varieties, which are Semillon and Grenache. These two varieties aren't just new grapes with new ideal characteristics - they will be used to create wines that require an additional step or decision in the winemaking process. I won't spoil it for you, but we will get into the details in the update announcement upon release.
  • New achievements and wine awards tied in to the new grape varieties.
  • The ability to uproot vines in owned Planting Tiles.
  • The ability to sell owned tiles.

In addition to next week's update, we're also working on this year's final update and the last batch of new content for the forseeable future, which will feature the long awaited Blending mechanic. This will come with a new grape variety (potentially two), as well as a new C&C mission and corresponding Steam achievements and Wine Awards.

I would also like to address the possibility of localization. We have been in touch with localization agencies and volunteers in the past, yet things have always come along that have made it difficult to pursue for our very small team. In the case of professional localization, the costs were always a little outside our budget. In terms of volunteers, the sheer volume of text needed to be translated is huge, and as volunteers are generously donating their free time, we expect it to take many weeks or months before we can get the game completely localized in one language.

However, we do hope to at least localize the game in one language (the frontrunner is German) before the end of the year. We cannot promise this as we are still hoping to scrape together the funds to pay for the localization, but if we can find the means, rest assured we will get it done.

As usual, thank you all very much for your continued support. We wouldn't be here without you.

I would like to humbly ask that if you enjoy the game so far, please do us a huge favor by giving us a positive review, if you believe we deserve it. As a small indie studio, we don't have the PR power of larger teams, and we rely solely on word of mouth. When you tell other players that our game is worth a try, it's more valuable than an advertising campaign. When you leave us a positive review on Steam, it helps us beyond words.

We hope you'll enjoy the upcoming new content, and we look forward to hearing your thoughts on it next week.

Many thanks, and may your grapes grow fat and your wine age gracefully.

Update: Terroir Version 2.1.3

Hello winemakers,

We hope you're having an awesome halloween. Jenny and I continue to grapple with the forces of evil (late nights and never enough coffee) as we introduce more optimizations and features to Terroir, and are happy to share with you the latest version.

In version 2.1.3, you will find the following changes and additions:

  • You can now assign hotkeys for all Worker Actions - that means easier access to all your tools and actions.
  • Added text feedback over your Estate that shows cash flow - that means you'll know how much money you earned or spent at the end of each month.
  • Made changes to the probabilities of rain during the summer - expect a little bit less rain during the summer months now.
  • Added more debt cushioning - you can go further below the previous negative limit, and you can use this cushion to bottle your wines (previously, once you go into the negatives money-wise, you can no longer spend).
  • Fixed an error with renaming Taverns - call them what you will now!
  • Added a new splash screen

More of these updates coming your way! Hope you enjoy them.

    Talk soon,

“...watching the years roll by over these lovely hills with a glass of wine in-hand—well, life could be worse.”
PC Gamer

“It caught my attention because it reminded me I’d always meant to try Viticulture – a worker-placement board game themed around cultivating a vineyard in Tuscany. Terroir seems to have a more modern setting, what with a plane and electric lighting appearing in the trailer but I have a fondness for hyper-specific management scenarios hence being intrigued by both this and Viticulture!”
Rock Paper Shotgun

“Terroir is incredibly rewarding, largely because of the sheer challenge of conquering its innate randomness. The satisfaction of figuring out how to create the perfect bottle of wine, the pride of being named the best wine of the year, watching your prestige grow and your territory expand, and the cautious necessity of keeping plenty of cash in your coffers becomes all the more potent because you know that, any given year, fate could turn against you and you could very well lose it all.”

About This Game

Terroir is a 3D tile-based tycoon game where you manage your very own vineyard. In Terroir, you grow a variety of different grape varietals, craft your wine, and expand and manage your Estate. You'll also have to deal with factors such as weather and random events, which can either make or break your business.

Some of the game's features and mechanics include:

  • Choose from a selection of different grape varieties, each with their own demands.
  • Dynamic weather system reflecting the unpredictability of real world climate.
  • Each complete playthrough lasts 60 in-game years, but Players can continue playing without contributing to their final score.
  • Craft wine through the game's 4 winemaking processes: Crushing, Fermentation, Pressing and Ageing. Each type of grape needs to be crafted a certain way to achieve the best results, so you'll have to learn and master each one.
  • Start out with a single planting tile, then expand your Estate to up to 33 tiles, using 6 different tile types. Some tiles affect the ones around it, so placement is key.
  • Customize your estate with ambient items.
  • CHANCE & CIRCUMSTANCE: Terroir's random event and mission system. Players can open the Mystery Box and choose between CHANCE (a random event that could either have a positive or undesirable outcome) or CIRCUMSTANCE (a mission that a Player completes for rewards, or gets penalized for failing).
  • Join Wine Awards for a chance to earn bonuses to your wine's value and your Estate's renown.
  • Clean, minimalist design and gorgeous low-poly 3D models.
  • Original soundtrack composed and performed by Singapore's CLARQuinet ensemble.

Put on your field gloves, grab a pair of pruning shears and build your Chateau literally from the ground up. Good luck, and cheers!
