Kingdom Celebrates its Second Birthday!

Wow, it’s been two years since Kingdom released. Two. Whole. YEARS. Back when we first partnered with the talented Thomas van den Berg (AKA noio) to publish a small game about royalty stuck to horses and throwing coins at people, we knew we had found something special. A game that played just as beautifully as it looked, and we couldn’t wait to show the world.

Fast forward two years, and it looks like a lot of you agree. Over 600,000 monarchs have ventured into the realms of Kingdom and Kingdom: New Lands, recruiting loyal subjects and discovering helpful hermits across the globe. We collectively make and publish games that we love, but the immense wave of love coming from you, our biggest fans, is surreal. To show our gratitude, we’ve got some special announcements to make.

We’re Adding a Sixth Island
Damn straight we are! For those of you who have been aching for more after completing island #5, your calls have been answered. But be warned: this will not be easy. Quite the opposite, really. This island is designed to test your mettle, to separate the true monarchs from the weak of spirit. If you want to win here, you’ll have to earn it.

We’re Bringing Back the Halloween Event
Back by popular demand for our PC and mobile players, we’ll be having an in-game event to celebrate everybody’s favorite candy-and-costumes holiday! Jack-o-lanterns, a haunted moon, and a special new mount will be patched in for a limited time only. No tricks, only treats up in here. Well, maybe one trick

Balance Updates and Performance Fixes Incoming
We’re continuing to tinker behind the scenes to improve the difficulty flow and performance on the Switch & Android versions, and will be testing these in Beta on Steam very soon. Stay tuned for more info!

Seriously though, we can’t thank all of you enough for the love and support for Kingdom over the years. As we diligently work on the next full adventure in Kingdom: Two Crowns, we can’t wait to be sharing more information about that with you soon enough.

Happy birthday, Kingdom!

An update on Kingdom: Two Crowns

Back at GDC, we announced Kingdom: Two Crowns and that standalone game is still in the works!

We wanted to give a proper update on Kingdom: Two Crowns though since it’s been a while! First off, it won’t be coming out this year like we had originally intended. WE’RE SORRY! It’s still a small team working on Kingdom: Two Crowns, and these things take some time! The vision grew larger than our original scope, to the point that this is no longer just an expansion that adds new content but rather a full-fledged new title.

Speaking of new things, when we unveiled Two Crowns we didn’t give a ton of info about the game itself, but now we’re ready so here we go!
  • New features! Well, this was a given but just to elaborate a bit we’re talking about a new win scenario, additional tech level, new citizen role, and more stuff we don’t want to spoil! And of course…
  • Co-op! That is the biggest draw for Two Crowns for sure! Co-op will be local split screen, but it’s also hot join so a friend can jump in and out of your game at any point during the campaign.
  • Brand new soundtrack! There will be zero tracks from any previous Kingdom game!
  • Overhaul of visuals! The pixel art in the Kingdom series is already top notch, but we’re taking it another step up and adding new skins for the rulers.
  • Available on lots of platforms! We announced PC and Switch, but alongside that we’ll also bring Two Crowns to Xbox One, PS4, and mobile!
By the way, we JUST announced Kingdom: New Lands is coming to the Nintendo Switch as well. It'll be out on September 14, so it's right around the corner!

Royal Edition

The Royal Edition includes the original Kingdom soundtrack plus 9 brand new tracks for New Lands, composed once again by the talented ToyTree.

Why add Kingdom: New Lands – you say?

Well, it’s an expanded and much improved-on version of the indie hit and IGF nominated Kingdom, originally designed and developed by Noio and Licorice – two awesome independent developers. The game came out on PC late last year and has provided hundreds of thousands of people with a solid way to spend some time in a faraway fantasy land, exploring, discovering and surviving. So, you know… a fun game!

What is the game about?

Good question! One approach to it would we to try to compile some sort of feature list, but what does that really tell you. Another way to address this question is to talk about the emotional journey and experience that Kingdom: New Lands offers.

It is about exploration, discovery, survival and that awesome feeling that you get, when you figure something out, on your own. When multiple pieces all of a sudden come together to form a whole – a basis for a new strategy or an understanding how something in the world of Kingdom: New Lands truly works.

It is about tenacity and overcoming obstacles – even when they seem to be unsurmountable. Pulling through, against all odds. Rebuilding and recovering. And that huge internal high-five when you succeed.

It is about figuring out how best to manage your little Kingdom and tie everything together in a fashion where the game doesn’t play you – you play the game.

It’s also beautiful, tranquil, melancholy, frantic, stressful and wonderful. It delivers a spectrum of emotions that combine into a unique experience.

It's a minimalist strategy game where you need to discover the rules of how the world behaves before you can rule effectively. It's also a little bit whimsical, it's pretty, and it can be frustrating but it won't hold your hand.

But what’s new?

Kingdom: New Lands introduces a lot of new things and builds on the original Kingdom game. It changes the end game significantly. It’s loaded with new elements, new things to discover and explore. It meets a lot of requests for new features, suggested improvements and general feedback from the incredible and wonderful community that has embraced the world of Kingdom and stuck with the game since the launch of the original title – and even further back, when the earliest iteration of Kingdom was a Flash based browser game, enjoyed by an incredible number of people.

So, for anyone that has played Kingdom before, Kingdom: New Lands will introduce many new elements that revitalize the experience. New players will find a bigger, deeper world than the original Kingdom (now called Kingdom: Classic) had to offer.

We hope you try out the game and enjoy playing it, as much as we’ve enjoyed getting it into your hands.

About This Game

Tales spread of far off isles with mysteries waiting to be discovered. Rulers will need all the strength of their subjects to sail away and find new kingdoms in these New Lands.

Kingdom: New Lands builds upon the award-winning gameplay and mystery of Kingdom by introducing an abundance of new content to the IGF-nominated title while maintaining the simplicity and depth that legions of monarchs have come to experience and enjoy. Travel to the New Lands and welcome the deluge of new mounts, merchants, and vagrants that call these isles home, but be wary of the new obstacles that threaten your arrival -- for not just the greedy creatures block your way but even the environment itself can defeat you.

Kingdom: New Lands asks you to puzzle things out on your own. You'll come across items, NPCs, and mysterious statues to help you but you'll have to figure out just how exactly they'll aide you in building and defending your Kingdom.

Kingdom: New Lands features:

● One ruler, their horse, and a bag of coins

● Greedy creatures trying to take your coins and crown every night (stop them!)
● Loyal subjects who will help build, attack and defend your Kingdom
● Multiple upgrades for your homestead, different unit types to attack and defend, and secrets littered throughout the land
● Beautiful soundtrack that has received two honorable mentions from the Independent Games Festival

Be brave, ruler, and fight to the bitter end, lest these New Lands conquer you instead.
