What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“At long last, after more than three quarters of a decade in development, Prismata has made its way to Steam Early Access!

Prismata is the first title in a genuinely new genre of strategy game. Prismata's original design was extremely experimental, and it took years of refining, testing, and iterating to bring that design to a high level of balance and polish. Steam Early Access represents the final phase of this long period of feedback-driven development as we add a large amount of new content (missions and units) to the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Our current plans contain about 5 months worth of projects and features that we feel are necessary for the game to be considered 'complete'.

That said, we often receive many community suggestions for new features, changes, and quality-of-life improvements that were not in our original plans, and we try to implement them whenever we feel that their benefits exceed their costs. Accordingly, we expect to spend a few extra months on undecided additional features inspired by community suggestions and requests.

We expect that a full transition to the 'released' state will occur during the autumn of 2018.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“As Prismata's core feature set has already been fully implemented, we expect that Early Access updates will mostly consist of new content, small changes to the game software, and small balance tweaks if needed.

Episodes 2 through 5 of the single-player story campaign will be released one at a time, at roughly 1-month intervals, beginning with Episode 2 in April (Episode 1 is debuting alongside the initial Early Access launch). We'll also be adding several dozen new Prismata units, a number of new events, and many quality-of-life improvements to the game's interface, graphics, and sound.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“All of the features listed below in the 'About This Game' section are already fully implemented.

Prismata has undergone continuous alpha testing since late 2014, so we've had years to iron out all the major bugs and optimize usability within the core game. During that time, millions of games were played on the Prismata servers with a relatively low number of crashes and around 99.9% server uptime.

We hope to continue to provide this high level of service during our Early Access period.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We will not be adjusting the price of the Campaign Founder's Pack (main game + full 5-episode single-player story campaign) during or after the Early Access period. That package is, and will always remain, the best value for players who want to experience the full game.

Toward the end of Early Access, we plan to introduce a more affordable entry point for new players (a 'lite' edition with substantially less single-player content). The exact pricing, features, and timing are still to be decided, but we're very committed to making Prismata accessible to as many people as possible while avoiding the exploitative pay-to-win monetization employed by a lot of CCGs and related products. Prismata will never be a game where you can pay for an advantage in competitive multiplayer.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Most of the changes we made to Prismata during our alpha period came as the result of player feedback, and we expect that the trend will continue during Early Access.

There are many ways you can reach us, including our Discord server, Steam Forums, and subreddit. Lunarch Studios founder Elyot Grant hosts weekly streams on Twitch with open Q&A and suggestion periods.

Additionally, you can report bugs, request features, and make balance suggestions right from inside the Prismata software itself! Each and every piece of in-game feedback you submit goes directly to our inboxes and we read them all!

We're extremely grateful to all of our alpha and Early Access players for their valuable feedback!”

Loader Bugfixes

March 20th, 2018

Hi everyone. Today's update is just a couple of fixes for the loader to reduce load times and implement additional backups in the event that loading fails. If you encounter any further problems on the loading screens, please report them or contact support@lunarchstudios.com.

Mini update

March 17th, 2018

Hi everyone. Just a few small bugfixes and tweaks:
  • Added the option to change the keybinding for undo (default is Backspace).
  • Fixed a bug where holograms didn't appear for people whose GPU drivers didn't support the extended Context3D profile.
  • Fixed a bug where the tutorial for the gold preview was sometimes not appearing.
  • Fixed a bug where the Ranked Play badge unlocked at the wrong level.
  • Fixed Anya's genomic ancestry to add to 100%. ;)
  • Made a number of small adjustments to error messages, tooltips, and UI.

Choose Your Target Event!

March 16th, 2018

In today's event, both players get a free Apollo that can target their choice of red, blue, or green base set units. Players can choose from an Anti-R Apollo that targets Tarsier and Rhino, an Anti-G Apollo that targets Gauss Cannon and Forcefield, or an Anti-B Apollo that targets Wall and Steelsplitter. Once players make their choices, there's no going back, so choose carefully!

March 14th, 2018

We fixed a serious bug that was causing a crash on game start for some Steam users due to an Adobe AIR warning. See this post for more information. Thanks to everyone who reported it!

We also fixed a soft-lock that was occurring in the tutorial in the armory.

Software update

March 14th, 2018

Hello everyone! Today's update is a bunch of small tweaks, bugfixes, and quality-of-life improvements based on feedback from the past few days. We've made the following changes:
  • Updated the automatcher algorithm parameters for Ranked Play and Casual Match to favour closer matches. This will increase wait times in some cases, but should not be an issue now that the server is more busy.
  • Adjusted the 'Organize Your Attack' challenge in Combat Training. It's now easier, but has a much more difficult bonus objective.
  • Made some internal adjustments to how subtextures are handled. This should save about 80MB of ram usage in some cases!
  • The default number of units in vs computer and vs player games is now 5 for new users. The Casual Match unit slider is now initialized at Fewer Units for new players as well.
  • The position of buybox tabs (closed, open, half-open) is now remembered between games.
  • Added a new 'Waste' effect that appears near the resource bar when Behemium and Replicase are wasted at the end of turn. This is experimental, we'd like your feedback on whether we should keep it!
  • Compressed the background images using DXT and LZW compression to save memory.
  • Fixed it so that emails would be obfuscated when displayed on screen in some locations of the software.
Additionally, we've implemented the following bugfixes:
  • Fixed a bug where the experience bar would not animate when players gained experience but didn't level up.
  • Fixed a bug where the supporter tier of a player (Engineer Tier, Steelsplitter Tier, etc.) might not be inferred correctly by the code.
  • Fixed a bug where file corruption could result in the game never loading.
  • Fixed a bug where the campaign conversation queues could crash the game if you used undo at the same time.
  • Fixed a bug where chat would scroll to the bottom in situations where it wasn't supposed to.
  • Fixed a number of other tiny bugs and interface annoyances.

The Story

Hundreds of years in the future, humans have engineered a prosperous new civilization on the distant planet Beacon, where the sun never sets. Meanwhile, the planet's frigid dark side has been colonized by an enigmatic faction of intelligent machines that threaten humanity with conflict.

In these new cybernetic times, human soldiers are obsolete. Instead, warfare is conducted swiftly with massive armies of robots. The Swarmwielders—human commanders of these mechanical forces—are the defenders of society, training relentlessly for the day when the machines strike again. However, when their own robots start to mysteriously malfunction, the humans find themselves endangered by something much closer than the machines lurking beyond the fringe.

Prismata blends elegant turn-based mechanics with the tactical decision-making elements that are at the heart of real-time strategy games.

Featuring simple and intuitive economic and combat systems, Prismata is incredibly easy to learn. However, no two Prismata matches are ever the same. Every game, players get a new pool of extra buildable units that must be used to their fullest potential. There are always new builds to plan and discover, and new threats to respond to. Each battle is fresh and unique.

Containing no pre-built decks, random advantages, or luck-of-the-draw moments, Prismata’s cat-and-mouse duels celebrate quick-fire tactics, deep thinking, and decisive strategy. Will you execute a perfectly-timed attack, or will you build up a monstrous economy and overpower your opponent with a massive army?
