About This Game

Let the battle begin! The Cossacks II: Battle for Europe add-on continues the renowned Cossacks II:Napoleonic Wars game. It depicts the rather short historic period of the Napoleonic wars. The Napoleon wars changed Europe forever, leading to the formation of empires and putting an end to almost one thousand years of constant strife between small states. The game provides mass-scale battles between thousands-strong armies of the nations involved in conflicts during this period. The theatres of operation introduce France, Britain, Austria, Russia, Prussia, Egypt, and three nations not represented in the original game – Spain, the Grand Duchy of Warsaw (Poland), and the Confederation of the Rhine.

The Cossacks II: Battle for Europe reconstructs in detail the soldiers' uniforms weapons and architecture of each nation. Each nation's army has its unique units and possibilities. The game includes over 180 units 190 buildings and 1200 flora and fauna elements. When developing the combat system the peculiarities of early 19th century warring were taken into account as was the value of formations provisions and troop morale. Tactical tricks utilized by military commanders of the time are fully reflected in the game. An "honest" system of bullet and cannonball ballistics based on physics is an innovative addition to the Cossacks engine. Other engine features include 3-dimensional landscaping which creates realistic-looking scenery and towns and impacts combat tactics. For example the firing range of a subdivision of soldiers or a cannon positioned at the top of a hill is greater than the firing range of a unitstationed on flat terrain.

Key features:

  • Control the French, Russians, Austrians, Britons, Prussians, or Egyptians -- master new weapons and tactics during a time that redefined the meaning of modern warfare.
  • Fight through historically inspired battles of the 19th century, with massive armies colliding in different types of terrain and weather.
  • Battles on real historical scale with tens of thausands of units on one map.
  • Realistic Troop Morale System - Well-fed troops live longer and grow in experience to become valuable battlefield assets, while fierce and overwhelming opponents, or marching long distances will cause morale to drop
  • Enhanced diplomacy tools help you create treaties that give you the advantages

I had to a ton of fixes to play this game. One involving data files from some random person that I'm sure voids any relevance to Cossacks Iogging hours to my steam account.

Beyond technical issues that almost make it impossible to play, this game is a gem. A complete gem. If you like Ultimate Generals Gettysburg, this will be a real treat. I've been playing this more than Cossacks 3.

This is a "like/recommend" with conditions...

1. buy it in a bundle (bundle stars is currently selling the series for $2.99)
2. Know that there is zero support for any of the games in the series
3. Expect problems, and don't expect the fixes to be easy. The patches and fixes for the retail hard copy of the game do NOT work for the Steam version
4. Win7 onward hates these games; high end graphics cards hate these games as well
5. It's a great series of games when they work

A great little known classic with many unique RTS featrues not seen in other RTS games up until recently.
Ahead of it's time but still a little buggy. An ambitious game that for the most part is a winner.
For those who like napoleonic warfare, this is a fun game that has Russian devs that come from the napoleonic re-enactment capital of the world, Russia. A lot of detail to be had here, glorious uniforms and many nations are represented.

Verry Good Game! I picked it up because I had some money left in a prepaid card and was verry surprised! I play it now with some friends and it is great!

+ Game focused on strategy and tactics.
+ Historically Accurate.
+ Artstyle still looks good in my opinion.
+- Slow Paced ( Good in my opinion)
- Needs more team maps.
- Not much players online.. so bring your friends!

While a nice addition to the Cossacks series, if you're looking for the arcady feel of the old cossacks game this game is not for you. This game is great, but has a very distinctively different feel to the older games, so it's best not to go with too many preconcieved notions on how it should be.

That being said once you reach a certain mass you will still get the classic "realism" feel and the combat has a lot of nice touches to it even though the extremely "mechanical" aspect to it does kind of make it less fluid.

Both PRO & CON
+/- food and resources are based on strategic resource points
+/- there is a little more realism to the combat
- combat is a little more stiff then the older games (by design)
- the added weight to the combat doesn't seem to add too much depth to it over long games
+ buildings and towns look more realisticly proportioned (especially compared to the first games)
+ units are more realistic
+ campaign felt more interesting (from what I played of it)
+ the new combat mechanics creates nice situations sometimes

Do not get this game. The Steam version is broken and virtually unplayable. Find it somewhere else, anywhere else, and play it. Dont get me wrong, the game is great, but it is not worth the risk that it will almost certainty that it will not work for you. That and the dev doesnt seem to care at all, about fixing the glaring bugs in this version of the game. Maybe if you are tech savvy you will be able to jurryrig the game to work for you but for everyone else stay away. And dont bother with the disc version either, it doesnt work on new systems very well. I havent tried GOG's version yet so I cannot say whether it is any good either. It is really unfortunate that this game has been abandonded the way it has, was really fun back in the day.

Doesn't work on Windows 10. Had many issues with trying to get it work on Windows 7 and it never fully worked (campaign missions were fine but the strategy map mode crashed every time after 1 battle). I've tried a few fixes and most don't even get it 1 second further into the game. Avoid this if you can unless you have a hard drive with old versions of windows installed as these may work.

Don't waste your money otherwise. Steam also don't care as its a "third party developer" so they just pass you straight off and copy and paste a response to you. Should have a warning on this game for W7,8 and 10 users as most will struggle to get it to run properly.

Definitely much better game than the earlier cossacks, seems better polished.

Gameplay is a bit slow, but I was enjoying it more or less until it crashed...

Classic game, must have. Nice way to spend hours on building up an army, defending your positions and attack when you feel strong enough. Could get a bit messy, but it's fun. If you have several enemies on a map, they seem to take up arms against you even when they're not teamed, though. And they seem to be able to raise armies a lot quicker...

Hello! Here in Poland we can play games that dont work. I have Win 10. Don't worry przyjaciele i can help ya! I could launch this game but it was in window... Really smal window i didn't even see the options. So i installed dxwnd. You need to start the program, click "edit" and "add". In the "path" and "launch" select your Cossacks "Engine.exe". Next under this select "hook all DLLs", "Hook Enabled", "fullscreen only". Then change options to the "VIdeo". Here select "Set16BPP RGB565 enconding", "SVGA modes". Select 1024x768 resolution and select "Limit resolution". Done. Now just click RMB on your engine.exe in this program and select Run. If it still dont work install "start_engine.exe" and try to use dxwnd once more. If it still dont work or game is crashing install this.
This is all what i need to do to play this game. But some people don't. Here in Poland you can do everything only if You want it really hard! God Bless ya Przyjaciele! And remeber. You need to use dxwnd everytime if You want to play! Or i just have to... That would be sad...

While this would otherwise be an amazing game, revolutionary in concept, it is to my great dissatisfaction to report it is entire incompatible with current operating systems. Even with all of the suggested fixes and work arounds, it simply refuses to function on any level of things. I recommend this game, but not for Windows 10 users.

Does not work on windows 7 on most computers.

Get a refund on steam:
1. Go into " HELP" above left in steam window.
2. Choose steam support
3. Click gamename
4. Choose " I purshased this by accident" No other option what I found.
5. Choose if u want it to be refunded to your card or steamwallet.

Its one of the best rts games but that wont help if its not supported on modern computers,
both GSV and steam should be ashamed of letting this product being sold when its not working. ( Also its kind of fun when I want to post this review I´m told that I have to be in the game at least five minutes to make the review, so I just have to let the Crashwindow be up for some more minutes :D )

Solutions I tried:
o Changing resolutions,
o patching up the game
o Start as admin, changing all settings there in different ways.
o Compability mode
o + some forum tips of how to get it to work.

I have been playing Cossacks, since it's initial release, in 2001. I disliked this version, at first. Although, after watching some 'Youtube' tutorials, I found myself engrossed.

This is an amazing game! I have put countless hours into it, outside of "STEAM". There is a slight learning curve.

I highly recommend it!
