"A sublime platformer with a subdued - but effectively haunting - atmosphere. Still one of the best of the famous indie darlings."

LIMBO is a superlative illustration of a dystopian world. Nightmares turn into reality for a small boy who wakes up in this pitch-black cataclysm. With nothing to tell him where to go or what to do, he wanders forth into the unknown.

From the short introduction into the boy's predicament, the shadows and darkness encroach him in a perfect noir setting. The graphics are simple, but compliment the setting impeccably. The game runs perfectly on any machine, and never leaves a steady frame rate, running at 60 frames per second on higher-performance machines.

Sound effects in LIMBO are stunning. An eerie atmospheric stereo soundtrack sounds so realistic with headphones, it's almost like you are in the game. Water, footsteps and enemies sound mysterious and create a mood that both intrigues and repels, which is a rarity in video game soundtracks.

LIMBO's story is one of mystery. The solemn-looking boy has no words, but at the same time he can convey a meaningful message of despair and sorrow. His agility is quite good, even if his jump is somewhat feeble. The platforming elements of LIMBO are simple, but work wonderfully. Ladders, boats and vines are utilised in obvious but unique ways, and makes gameplay different after every stage. Enemies are not the only threat in LIMBO. Yes, there is a giant spider, but you can die just as much by this than a gap in the floor or vicious spikes protruding out of the ground in hap-hazard directions. Death is everywhere in LIMBO, and the scene painted by Playdead is definitely bone-chilling.

In my opinion, LIMBO is a wonderfully dark portrait of a universe that both frightens and invites. LIMBO is definitely melancholy, but its wonderful mechanics, story, sounds and controls combine to create a game that should be a must-have for anyone who enjoys an unknown adventure. LIMBO's world left me speechless, but at the same time I wouldn't hesitate to dive into its hellish depths again.

Surreal. Nightmarish. Dreamy. Scary and intense. Relaxing and calming. Dark and stunning. Lynchian. This game is a beautiful experience.

I was not sure if I would like this game, the graphics looked good and it had a lot of good ratings. So I finally got it and I must say I havent stopped playing it. The graphics are amazing, the controls while simple are very responsive, you move fluidly through the world and just figuring out how to get to the next area is very rewarding. I wish I would have got this game sooner, so if you are on the wall about getting this one dont be just get it.

Amazing game, very atmospheric, very creepy and its very dark.
You get impaled with spikes and spider legs, your body gets clamped and ripped to pieces by a bear trap and creepy "tribal" people are wondering around a creepy forest.
The puzzles aren't easy, they are fun.
i would rate this 9.5/10 its VERY fun.
ps. i haven't finished it yet :P

I Really love this game. It's dark, twisted, artistic and it really tickled my sadistic nature when it came to dying in the game.

Pro's:
> The artistic design is well put together for a black n white scheme.
> Inventive puzzles that are eager to entertain.
> Death does not throw you completely backwards in the game.
> Simple controls.
> Death scenario's that can entertain even the mildest sadist.

Con's:
>The game is quite short ( took me 2 hours to complete ). Thats a big one for me.
> The game really lacks a storyline. A Player really should be able to start a game, and have a basic understanding. The gist of the storyline is only really obtained out of game.
> Doesnt offer much to encourage player to replay the game.

Overall, the game may have been rather short which dissapointed me in the end. But i do not regret purchasing it as it did provide me with a pleasant experiance.

I Do hope to see a second installment one day, but hopefully they expand on the idea and provide an even better play experiance.

this game is a challenge and the story is complex, but it's also really emotional and you never really know what is going to happen next.

Limbo is a 2D platform game where you play a nameless boy who wakes up in a dark forest and needs to find his way past obstacles while looking for his sister.
At the start, the visual art was sort of reminiscent of late 20th century Eastern European animated kids movies. But the dark environment quickly escalates into horrific scenes with severed limbs and other terror to be found in the woods... Not a game for kids!
I found myself quickly drawn into the atmosphere solving puzzle by puzzle. Most of them are fairly straightforward and logical, others require trial & error or some more thinking. The controls are easy and won't break your fingers.
Overall, a highly recommended puzzle game! But beware of the spiders...

Score: 8.5/10

Pro:
+ immersive graphics
+ balanced mix of puzzles

Contra:
- maybe a bit too short?

I am not a fan of the "trial and error" type games or "gotcha" with cheap kills. This game falls into that catagory imo. I played through it on the 360 but just can't bring myself to do it again on the PC. Maybe someday.

Mixed feelings, and not in a good way...
Yes, this game is beautiful in terms of art. At first, it really sets this gloomy mood that I enjoy.
The first few levels are finely balanced, just tricky enough to be challenging, but still easy enough to pass if you try.

But somewhere along the way, the atmosphere fades and all that's left is frustration.
The majority of puzzles require precise timing and trial and error, with some fake difficulty thrown in for good measures.
Even the slightest mistake means death, and while the checkpoints were (luckily) generous, you were still forced to repeat some very annoying sections.

In short, I would say the utterly disappointing ending just wasn't worth the hassle.

And then came the terrible hunt for the DING! achievement.
While completely optional, this part was just one huge step in the wrong direction. Walking in pitch-black darkness for long minutes only to be killed by a randomly positioned sawblade that you cannot see really isn't my idea of fun...

The game wasn't able to immerse me in its world. The black and white color scheme didn't help either. The whole game basically consists of trial and error. You discover a hazard (mostly by getting killed by it) and evade it afterwards. Sometimes you have to figure out how to do this (mostly by running back), but more often it is quite clear after you discovered what awaits you. The replay value is very low.

The Good:
-Has some really interesting and challenging puzzles.
-Atmospheric, I guess.

…But the rest, I personally didn't enjoy. One of my biggest complaints is how sadistic the game seems. Sure, it's a challenging game, so you're going to die, but so often the deaths feel cheap, like a jump scare or a trick question. For example, at one point, you're walking along, and if you walk through a particular patch of tall grass, you step into a bear trap and die. There's no way to know that it's that until you've already done it. I guess it's there to lend to the antagonistic environment, but personally, I just found it frustrating, not fun.

Beyond that, there's nothing truly intriguing or interesting to explore in the world. The spider is creepy, but it's not enough to carry the rest of the game. Just in general, the biggest problem here is that I didn't find Limbo fun. Maybe the developers were trying to do something else with this game, but all I felt was disappointment.

This game is too slow, too easy, and too short.

It'd be a good browser-based game though.
