Heroes Unchained Event

Greetings War Mages!

By now you’ve read our big announcement about the upcoming changes coming to Orcs Must Die! Unchained. We know the community is keen for news on when the update will be available and what to expect, but our teams here at Robot are still hard at work on it and we aren’t quite ready to reveal this information yet.

In the meantime, we’re launching an All Heroes event – not just for a weekend or a week, but until the next OMDU update. That’s right – ALL heroes will be guest heroes for the foreseeable future. We’ll have details on when to expect that next update available soon, but until that time we wanted to open up the entire pantheon of OMDU heroes for everyone to play and enjoy.

You may have noticed that we’ve been a little quiet lately. If you’ve been with us long enough, you know that being quiet usually means we’re thinking really, really, hard about something. In this case, we’ve been thinking really hard – and even arguing some – about a few big decisions to make for the game.

We’ve always seen community feedback as an important part of our development process. We read practically every Steam review, forum post, Facebook comment, support email, and Twitter reply out there.

When we look at the big picture from players alongside the server data, a clear picture starts to emerge– Survival is by far the most popular element of OMDU. With this portrait of the current game becoming clearer, we’ve been faced with some difficult discussions.

Despite tremendous efforts, Siege PvP mode just hasn’t worked out. As we’ve gone through various iterations on the game mode, we've ultimately seen only a small portion of our players actively playing Siege. More importantly, people who play Siege matches are less likely to continue playing the game at all after their match. This has been the case since the beginning of Open Beta, when matchmaking queues were shorter and games were more frequent. As some of the most passionate fans of Siege mode, it’s been difficult for us at Robot to come to terms with this feedback and data. Ultimately, the Siege game mode has a small hardcore group of players, but it isn’t building a healthy long-term community around itself.

As the game has grown, Siege and Survival modes have competed with one another more and more for development resources. The need to balance the traps, heroes, and gear for both of these game modes and develop each in consideration with the other is holding both modes back.

The most common piece of community feedback we get is that the game still needs to feel more like OMD and OMD2. We’ve always agreed with that feedback. Adding Survival and Endless modes to OMDU was a big step in that direction, and we can make them much, much better. The vast majority of our beta players came looking for that classic Orcs Must Die! feeling, and we can and will deliver it.

Siege mode is being removed from Orcs Must Die! Unchained as of the next update . We believe that competitive gameplay still has a future in Orcs Must Die!, but we’ve decided that Siege mode is just not the right fit for that. Competitive gameplay could return to OMDU, and if it does, it won’t be in the form of Siege.

Our focus will now turn entirely toward making Survival feel, look, sound, and play more like a clear evolution of OMD and OMD2. We’re doubling down on Survival mode to bring back the kick-ass OMD gameplay you love.

We will be doing an account reset with the next update of OMDU . The shift in the game has required changes to many of the existing systems and inventory simply won’t slide over into the new systems. All social connections – guilds, friend lists, friend referrals and their rewards – will remain intact, but any progress or content you earned through play will be reset so that all players can experience the new game equally.

Any gold that was purchased and then spent in the game will be put back into your account, and ALL players will get an additional $5 worth of gold if they login within the first two weeks of the new update.

This week will be all about answering your questions. On Tuesday September 20th at 3:00pm CT, tune into Insider Access on OrcsMustDie.tv. We’ll have a live Q&A session with Robot Entertainment CEO Patrick Hudson and Orcs Must Die Executive Producer Chris Rippy. On Thursday September 22nd, we’ll also have an Ask Me Anything (AMA) with Design Director Ian Fischer over at /r/OrcsMustDie. We hope to see you there.

In the meantime, you can visit this FAQ to find answers to many of your additional questions about topics like launch and Founder Packs.

While we are saddened to see Siege mode going away, we are also extremely excited for the future of OMDU. We’ve got big plans for OMDU, and we are eager to prove it to our players.

About This Game

OMDU is currently in Open Beta. We’re listening to you. Please check out our forums and let us know how we can make the game better for you.

“It’s Orcs Must Die! 3 and much, much more.” – Polygon

“Unfortunately for orcs, it’s better than ever.” – PCGames N

“Unchained undeniably felt like an Orcs Must Die! game.” – Hardcore Gamer

Orcs Must Die! Unchained takes the award-winning Orcs Must Die! action tower defense gameplay to a whole new level with 3-player team-based gameplay! But don’t get cocky, because the stakes are higher, the traps are bloodier, and the invaders are even more ravenous. You’ll need to bring your A-game and a couple of the biggest orc-haters you can find!

Orcs Must Die! Unchained is set in the familiar world of its hilarious fantasy predecessors, years after the finale of Orcs Must Die! 2. With dozens of new rifts and worlds beyond them, heroes have come from far and wide to wage all-out war for control of these magical gateways. In the years since Orcs Must Die! 2, Maximillian and Gabriella have done their best to rebuild the once-mighty Order. Their new enemy, the Unchained, is no longer the mindless horde defeated twice before, but instead an organized army led by its own powerful heroes.

  • Killin’ Orcs and Smashin’ Dorks – Orcs Must Die!’s classic white-knuckle witch’s brew of action and strategy returns, letting you team up with your friends to lay waste to millions of new invading monsters! Build an impenetrable gauntlet of traps to hack, grind, flatten, gibletize and incinerate your foes before they charge into the heart of your rift!

  • It's Definitely a Trap – The only thing better than building traps for murdering minions is building more traps! Play to unlock traps, then upgrade them to be even deadlier. Cover your fortresses in gleeful torture devices and engineer a variety of hilarious and violent ends for invading minions. Customize your strategy for every battle. The hordes are no match for the powers of elements and physics!

  • Real Action Heroes – Are you mage enough to defend the rifts? A wide variety of unique and powerful heroes with deep gameplay options offer a plethora of painfully creative ways to stop orcs in their grimy tracks. Old friends Max and Gabriella return to fight alongside a cast of new heroes like Blackpaw, Hogarth, Stinkeye, and Bloodspike. Whether you prefer might and majesty or scum and villainy, there’s a hero for every type of orc-slayer around.

  • Your Favorite Ways to Slay – Survival mode lets players murder their way to the top of the orc pile in 3-player co-op defense gameplay that every Orcs Must Die! fan will love. Weekly Challenges and Daily Quests give players the chance to unlock extra traps and upgrade parts. Long-time favorite Endless mode has returned in Orcs Must Die! Unchained with expanded 3-player co-op.

Siege Mode really refreshens the whole OMD formula. It adds a MOBA-like experience without being as complex and time demanding as said genre. It also adds a real competitive mode to the game which was something its predecessors sorely lacked, since it adds longevity to the game the Survival Mode just could not provide. The characters specifically designed with Siege Mode in mind are also a ton of fun, wether you're attacking, defending or pillaging.

The only problem with Siege Mode is it's not in the game anymore. The devs deleted it, since it didn't seem to get as much resonance as they hoped. So they decided to not just stop supporting it (which would've been fine), but to delete it entirely, which is the reason why I will be deleting this game.

spent countless hours building up my deck for pvp play to find pvp is being removed, dont start playing if you were interested in the competitive side, huge disappointment. spent a bit of money on the game and we're told the gold will be refunded so you can buy other items, useless to me though.
from what i gather OMD2 was much preferred as it had 1 pricetag for everything instead of microtransactions, seems like a better use of money.

Was a ton of fun, it's about to be ruined by the new update. They plan to wipe everyone's accounts, so all that junk you HAVE to spend hours grinding for will be null. Also they intend to somehow gain new players by removing half the game modes available, leaving only boring, repetitive PvE. Gonna get my last few games before the update drops, then uninstalling.

Note: I am a MOBA fan, so would have liked to play the Seige mode, but it is going away.

I have reviewed the Survival mode (Tower Defense) which is one of my most liked genres (played and liked FieldRunners 1 and 2, Gemcraft and a number of other, smaller games in this category)

This is a game with great potential, but deep flaws.

1. Visceral combat with first person view that is unique to the game.
2. Satisfaction when you defeat a wave

1. Too difficult. Gives you a losing feeling every time you can't finish a map.
2. Multiplayer is made essential by the difficulty level. At Account Level 6, I can't even beat a Lvl 1 map solo consistently. 3. The in-game levelling curve is bad for early levels. The maps increase in difficulty (and sophistication) but the player doesn't.
4. The in-game matchmaker to find teammates for you will also decide the level of content. So you can't do easy maps with a team.
5. Early levels (I didn't get beyond 6 at this time of writing) are grindy. Paying will give you some benefits - which is a con both ways.

Overall, a good game lost because of its bad design flaws.

Can't play with a group of four without one of us being level FREAKING EIGHTY!? can't unlock a character without playing a whole bunch of matches, AND my resource gain is lowered because i don't have a character... to make it harder to GET A CHARACTER? Bad monetization, also what is monetization doing in a BETA GAME. Bad bad bad. Map balance is bleh, matchmaking is still garbage. Just play OMD2 or Dungeon Defenders or Sanctum 2.

I ended up playing this game because I loved the other OMD games, but wanted support for at least 4 players. As my friends and I get together every weekend to "LAN party" this was a fresh addition that we could all play together. Survival was fun, and Siege was fun. Then a new update forced survival down to 3 players from 5 untill you reach level 80 in the game. This was severly annoying as reaching level 80 is quite the grind, and it removed out ability to play survival together. That being said, we still had Siege mode and played the hell out of it as it still supported 5 players. We finally reached level 80, but the difficulty in 5 player survival was ridiculous. It was like trying to attack Orcs with a wet noodle. So, we gave up on the fun we used to have in Survival mode and started exclusivly playing Siege. Then they removed Siege. So, this game now only supports 3 players. The entire reason I wanted this game was because I loved the other OMD games, but wanted more players. Since that's out now, it's difficult to recommend this game anymore. Just pay once for OMD2 and have a full game without worrying about having to deal with all the microtransactions.

Although the gameplay is addictive in a way, especially if you prefer MOBA type of gameplay, the current build is sheldom playable, the server keeps disconnecting me from the game and can't even play in normal hours plus the matchmaking queue is so long, took me at average 10 minutes to find a game.

I wouldn't have written a negative review for problems with a game still in Beta, but in the upcoming update log, the developers state that they read each of these Steam Reviews. That gem of wisdom is bundled with exponential disappointment.
Seige mode (the mode being removed) was the only mode that worked. PVE crashed because the server can't handle the enemy count. I was going to wait until the product was finished to dive into competetive gameplay. By that I mean grab my friends (who aren't fond of sacrificing scarce play time to do volunteer work playtesting. They only do that when a pay check is involved.) for a single match daily, the way I do most MOBA's. It seems though that I am the exact opposite of the type of player they want, as they seem to see it as a negative that an E-Sport player or team doesn't do game after game after game, which I'm guessing is what they think happens with regulars Sports Teams. There are some great YouTube videos I could reference and/or link to that explain why most online games try to do the opposite to prevent player burn-out, but given that all my progress is about to be wiped, I feel I've already wasted too much time and effort with this whole mess of a Beta.
Seriously, what is with this recent wave of Beta MOBAs expecting professional level competetive players to join the beta-tester crowd and treat their test software like the completed and stable games that are already reliably available?!

Massive moneygrab. Free to play means you're the product, and this game is not shy of that fact. Should've known since Gameforge is involved here. They ruin everything they touch.
