The game is very fun if you have someone to play with. Tried it with two xbox controllers and it works fine + keyboard. Have problems with Dinput gamepad though... Couldn't get it work except directional keys (left, right, up, down). But Xpadder or x360ce might fix this problem easely. I prefer latter.
Developers promised online multiplayer by this summer but it is july already and there are no news. But it seems they are still working on it and on a new game modes.

You can learn this game quite fast. The mechanics is very simple and fun. There are no complicated combos like in MK or Street fighters.

Gamepad is recommended. I haven't really tried to play with a keyboard. But some people complained that it is difficult to play without gamepad.
It is worth to buy cheap gamepad for this game and call few friends for a fight,

Controls for keyboard are horrible. You can only change the controls before launching the game, but I haven't gotten to the point where the game actually saves any of my controls. How does player 2, 3 and 4 control their character on a keyboard? I don't know, since there's nowhere to look it up/edit. Unless you own a controller, don't get this game.

+ innovative idea of light and shadow shifting
+ nice calligraphy style
+ awesome local multiplayer
+ many maps
+ simple concept
+ casually playble

- single player might get boring fast
- best played with controller

That game doesn't come along with the lastest, best, fanciest graphic, neither there aren't tons of combo moves and the amount of objects to use is very limited.
The main idea is the constantly changing background either revealing or hiding the player inbetween an samurai environment and on that the game emphasises.
So there is not too much content, but the content given is a solid base to have fun with.
I got this game in a sale for a quarter of the normal price and made a good deal so far. The controlls were a bit difficult at the beginning, but since I bought a controller, I can use the whole potential.
So if you like fast action 4 player games, you can buy this one without wasting money. If you are a bit unsure wait for a sale.

Very lethal and unpredictable 4 player local deathmatch game, add it to the rotation with Lethal League, Samurai Gunn, Towerfall: Ascension etc.

While I wholeheartedly recommend this game, I can only recommend it in this state if you can play 4 player. If they add an online multiplayer and integration with the Steam Workshop for modding, it would increase the value of the product immensely.

This is a game about speed, stealth, and lighting. The lighting seems to change at random times.

You play on either the light team or the dark team. If you stand still while in your element (a light team member in the light, a dark team member in the shadow) you disappear from sight, and can hold a button to stay hidden and move slowly. But if you dash (your typical movement speed), your outline becomes a bit easier to see. I've found it's easier to distinguish a moving dark team member in shadow than it was to detect a moving light team member in light, which unbalances it a bit, but it's not too bad, and I'm sure its something the devs can easily fix.

When you're attacking, it's pretty much one hit kills, though there are glancing blows. Also, when not stealthed, you're moving fast. This really leads to two types of tactics. Slow, methodical, waiting ninja strikes where you remember where you are while stealthed and wait for an opponent to either pass over you, or get close enough to dash and slice them up. It's that, or you dash around, just trying to be faster than everyone else. I've found either tactic works well, and obviously you can change up while you play, depending on the situation.

So with the dynamics at play, it makes the game feel like you're either a ninja, hiding in wait, or a samurai trying to out iajutsu everyone else. Tons of fun, tons of flavor for a simple 4 person multiplayer game (no story, no single player except with bots).

Just the fact that this is a PC game with local multiplayer makes me like this game, everything else about it makes me love it.

Get this game, get three friends, and play this game! NOW!

I first came across this game at Unite 2015 Boston when the developer and I attended the same design talk. He demoed an early build for me and it showed alot of promise. Some mechanics have been altered since then i.e. you weren't shown at all when you moved back then, but I like the approach now.

Love the changing backgrounds, definitely adds an element of dynamics to the gameplay.

Honestly one of my favourite couch multiplayer games, can't wait for online multiplayer and leaderboards.

Hi, I met you at the EGX Rezzed Event at Tobacco Dock in London! (I was the kid who challenged the ninja)

For the review:

A very fun game. It's fast paced and really great to play with friends - especially good to hear that online multiplayer is in development. It has a simplistic art style, yet beautiful. It's gameplay is original, and the choice of characters are diverse. I also like the fact of how you use silihouttes, making all the fighting very detailed and more interesting then just two guys fighting in a game such as Tekken or Street Fighter. The powerups are also very interesting and move the game along as skill and luck go hand in hand.

It is well worth the money of a cheap price of just under 7 pounds.

The controls are also quite good for contoller.

I would also like to know if this game supported for Steam Contoller, because I would want to play two player with my brother; one on keyboard; one on controller, is that supported?

Could ruin friendships xD (jk)

Overall, I would give this game a reccomendation for anyone who likes the Japanese Art Style, generally interesting in Bushidos, or just love fighting games.

Highly Recommended !!!!!!
This game is really addictive and a great laugh with friends! It can be quite comical or really damned brutal depending on who you play it with.
Well balanced, simple controls, simple concept all makes for a game that will stand the test of time.

So many "ha ha ha HHHAD YA!!" moments

...and just as many "Doh!" moments too.

Saw this at EGX so bought it. Good fun…the single player is simple but the multiplayer is where the real game is. Downside is no online multiplayer, but seen that they’re adding that now anyway.

Black and White Bushido is a multiplayer arena fighting game that sees you fight in teams of black or white samurai in arenas where the background is either black or white. The general idea is when standing against your colour background you are invisible allowing for all sorts of sneaky stealth kills. Controlling your character feels fairly fluid and it won’t be long before you are bouncing around the level painting the fields red.

There are 4 different characters to choose from although I must admit they did not feel radically different from each other when being played. Scattered throughout the arena is also a number of power-ups ranging from throwing stars to bombs. While these are fun to use they are generally a single use item and I felt more could have been done with them.
The stealth mechanic works well especially with 4 players as it is impossible to keep track of where everyone is. The only real problem is that after dying and re-spawning it often took me a few moments to work out where the hell I was.

The main part of the game is deathmatch split into either straight deathmatch or capture the flag game types. With only 5 arenas to choose from you do pretty quickly yearn for some more selection. Equally the challenge mode which is the games only real single player element outside deathmatch with bots feature you completing a bunch of single player objectives without dying such as kill 3 people from behind or kill 3 people using wall jumps. While a nice little distraction this equally ends up as nothing more than a side mode due to the one hit kill and inability to continue.

I love the idea of the game and with 4 friends it’s an absolute blast. I first played the game at EGX2015 and came away thinking this was definitely a highlight of the day. But in reality without having 3 other people to play against it does not quite hold the same shine. So yes for an evening of multiplayer it’s great but it burns bright and fast and will grow old quickly.

Hopefully some more maps and modes down the line can help spice it up.

Please check out our video review below for gameplay footage.

A review copy of the game was obtained from the developers free of charge. My thoughts and opinions are however totally my own.

Pretty simple but fun local multiplayer game. It's like Samurai Gunn with a lot more emphasis on stealth and lot less levels. More details:

"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Bull ♥♥♥♥." - me after losing a cap to a hidden friend

Think Samurai Gunn with a team-based light/shadow stealth element and capture the flag on top. Double jumping, wall jumping, aerial and rush attacks, slinking into the light or shadow, caltrops, shurikens, smoke bombs... tons of fun locally with four players (no online play)! The single-player challenge mode is great but the real meat is in multiplayer.

Black & White Bushido is a fun little four player versus game that has a great novelty of really making you feel like a ninja through use of camoflauge. My regular TowerFall group gave it the thumb's-up (which they rarely like anything but the usual). Its certainly smaller in scale, but has enough fun for a couple of gatherings. Overall, I do wish there was more content, though.

The coolest thing about this game is its novelty; you first choose either a black or white ninja, which allows you to blend in really well with like color. This adds in some nice strategy where you can just sit still and wait for the kill. Its reminiscent of getting the mirror item in TowerFall. Really makes you feel like a ninja.

+Awesome use of the black and white camoflauge to make you feel like a boss with those stealth kills
+The whole level is on the screen at one time (like TowerFall and unlike Duck Game) - the moving camera in other games can bother some gamers with it constant zooming-in-and-out

-Content is slim; only a handful of levels (like 5 or 6), and two game modes (deathmatch and capture the flag)
-Music and sound effects are nothing to write home about
-Needs more weapons and consumables

Get it on sale, if you are into local play.

The best 2d arena fighting game no one is playing. Reminds of Nidhogg without stepping on its toes, as its fighting style is brutal, enjoyable and completely different. Feels like playing an episode of Samurai Jack. This game will give you tense battles, hard fought victories and cheap sneak kills. Initially simple with its surface black and white capturing mechanic, it actually hides interesting quirks and deep technical mechanics, such as jump cancelling, animation buffering, double jump timings, and action priorities.

Sorely needs online multiplayer to achieve its full potential, but from meeting the developers at EGX, know this is in their ambitions, even if perhaps its not in their immediate plans. Great game.
