Prospekt Year 1 Update!

Hi everyone Rich here, so tonight I’m putting out quite an extensive change for Prospekt, I have also made a new Vlog for you on Youtube all as per requested by quite a few of you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeYp3cFcleI

This vlog is a look into where I work and make Prospekt and what's coming out in this update so be sure to check it out if you want to take a look into what equipment I‘m using etc to make the game.

So to begin with I guess ill say today is the Prospekt 1 Year anniversary. Exactly one year ago I got an email saying Project-X has now been Greenlit. What a crazy year it has been. Being given permission to design for video gaming's most prestigious brand has been incredible. Massive highs and massive lows. Endless work periods, sleepless nights.

Conferences in Colonge and London, online meetings with people in Seattle.
A new business was born. Many contracts signed, thousands of dollars and pounds exchanged. Met some great people. Over 1 million people have visited the store page, at one point peaking at 10,000 people a minute. Articles in every major and minor video game press outlet both online and in print magazine oh and don't forget BBC news, that was crazy. Then both the hatred and love from thousands of people.

If you would have said this would be my future three years ago when I started this project. I would have called you crazy. But here I am, and I'm super grateful to Valve for letting me do this. I Look forward to continuing to work with them in the future to make more great games. To anyone who has an idea they truly believe in i'd say shoot and just go for it. Worst case scenario you end up back in a job similar to one you just left.

Also I have decided due to the huge demand to play the closed beta to just make it an open beta because of the high demand it's just easier to keep it open. Anyway, with all that being said, I’ve been working flat out non stop on Prospekt for the last three weeks so here goes… This is what is in this update today.

( Its quite extensive. )

Changes Include :

Fixed node graph issue that was causing players to have node graph on there screen rebuilding despite node graph not being needed to rebuild

New graphical improvements throughout the game by changing the final render to remove the grey tone some of you may have noticed, now when you play the game you will notice the colours are all much more defined, sharp and provide a vastly greater experience.

New hunter battle vastly improved from the original Combine Power Co level which includes a dynamic arena with some destructible environments.

Added more random supply crates that people were asking for through level three.

Added extensive decals to levels one through three. ( I know some of you may have noticed the lack of decals in the release version of Prospekt, this was due to a complex bug that I couldn't fix in time for release unfortunately. This bug would come into effect when you would use a real time light. Regardless of where the light was shining in the map it would light up every decal to full brightness and look absolutely terrible, so I had to make the call, real time lighting, or decals. I chose the lighting. However this has now been either fixed or worked around in many areas allowing me to use both.

Improved some areas for more detail in level one

Greatly improved lighting issue in Cold Water Intake

New signs throughout level two and three to improve immersion and help guide the player

Entirely new designed from scratch second stage of level three.

New particle effects for the alternative fire on the AR2 weapon. ( I am aware the particle effect is not attached to the weapon and im working on it but couldnt get it done in time for this update )

New particle effects for the shotgun, now when you fire a round the shotgun will release a small trail of smoke.

Greatly graphically improved Combine Energy Ball Generator with new particle effects, higher resolution, and sprites.

Introduced new models to level three which include dynamic computers that have randomised sprite based flashy computer lights.

Introduced some new small combine models that I have been working on.

A new Ultra High Definition texture ( UHD ) that I would like you all to test and see how your FPS has been effected. This can be found on the power station floor

Added several new textures over all that I have been working on.

Increased detail of older textures in Half-Life 2

Introduced real time dynamic lighting in level three that I would also like to see how this affects people's FPS. I have Included a nice easy switch in the main menu to turn on the FPS counter. I have over done the lighting on purpose to see what peoples FPS drop will be like. It’s almost a small stress test to see how far I can push the engine on your pc’s and when I put this version out for good ill have a reasonable idea of how much dynamic lighting I can include. So if you are getting low FPS in the particular area it’s on purpose. However it is awesome to play, every hanging light can be shot out that provides a totally different combat event on each play through.

I would be really greatful if you are experiencing low ~ mid FPS to tell me your system spec in the forums so I can get a good idea of peoples hardware capabilities.

Removed the super annoying explosion that completely owned people if they got unlucky in the portal room of Nova Prospekt.

New Font that I have designed for Prospekt based on Opposing Force.

And of course most importantly of all, fixed the rather insignificant double doors that people were having a total meltdown over. ( I would also like to add, I did actually purposely design it that way, the thought being how can you open two doors at the same time when you are holding a gun in one hand but need to twist two door handles without putting the gun down? But I do agree it looks better in the game. )

Please do remember this is a beta for the time being so you may have some bugs, if you do please let me know and ill get on it.

To take part in the beta just go into your games properties, it will be called “Prospekt Phase 2”

Hope you enjoy it, now its time for a beer.

Rich

Prospekt - The Forward Plan

Hello to everyone following Prospekt I hope you are all well. So it's been exactly 4 whole weeks since I put the first update for the game out and not only that we’ve all now seen the new Steam review system change.

After addressing the main issues that were repeatedly coming up in patch one, I thought I would give it some time to see how things level out. So far so good, we have jumped quite a bit from 47% approval overall to between 69% ~ 70% in the last 30 days, coupled with me talking to people one on one about what they didn't like in particular. I feel that has given me a firm direction on what needs to be done to the game.

So what's new and what's happening in the land of Prospekt? Well the plan is over the course of… well... time... Work on every level in Prospekt giving them an extension to increase overall gameplay time and improving current content. There are also some things in the background that i'm going to keep a little secret until i’m in a position to reveal to you all.

There will be a closed beta coming out on either Monday or Tuesday if anyone would like to be a part of this you can go onto community discussion and let me know your interest there. On top of that there will be an update coming out soon after I have had some feedback on changes from players.

To give you a taste of the improvements that are in the works there is a good example below...

So now it’s time for me to continue working on the game and generating new and improved content for you all to play so once again ill say thank you all very much for your support and I will be back in touch with you all in the course of well... Time...

Yeah, it's pretty good, for the most part.
I completed it in 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Chapter 1 and 2 are unusually dark, it wouldn't of killed to start with the torch. I didn't expect much after seeing the reviews for this game, The level design for the game is pretty good, there is an area with a crashed dropship and that looks really fantastic, however the fact that Antlions never stopped spawning and you had to fight them all off whilst looking for the tiniest exit.

I had to fight the Antlions for a while and I ended up depleting my ammo before I even found where I was supposed to go.

The game starts with puzzles and then kind of just abandons them. The game sort of just pushes you straight into shooting and killing, it more or less appears out of nowhere.

The combine base is very well designed though. He's done a good job there.
The ending is kinda meh and more frustrating than fun.

Dialogue also always gets cut off which is really annoying. You have to stand still whilst listening to the dialogue unless you want to miss half of it.

Overall anybody that is like me that is dying for the next Half-Life experience, then this will hopefully tide you over.
Get it on sale.

I almost forgot that the game has some really cool particle effects.

NOTE - THIS REVIEW WAS WRITTEN ON THE PRE-SUMMERSALE PATCH

Non-spoiler review - Very combat based, very Challenging, but the story telling and level design more than made up for the extra challenge.

It is more than worth the £3.75 that it is currently at during this sale. If you think you would ever like a bit more Half-Life, I would definitely urge you to but this as it is extremly cheap right now.

NOTE - THIS REVIEW INCLUDES SPOILERS! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Ok, So let's break down my experience of Prospekt

->Went in thinkining "Oh, it's a Half-Life 2 Addon, probably won't be much fun."
Oh Boy was I wrong.
If you enjoyed the sequenced combat in Half-Life 2, You'll love this!

Though that's where the similarities of the games begin to differ.

I would attempt to make some more comparisons between the games, but that is vastly unfair.
First of all, Half-Life 2 was developed by a team of developers. Prospekt was developed by just one.
Which is still a giant feat, considering the length of this game matches the length of the Half-Life 2: Episodes.

Pros -
New Levels - The levels were extremly refreshing. While the maps theme remained true to Half-Life 2, the maps themselves were new and very well made.

Story - While the game lacked much of a story, the game told the story of Sheppard before the events of Half-Life: Opposing Force. This introduced a new way of story telling, and while the story is very predictable (and that's only because most of us know how Opposing Force went) the other way of story telling was still a breath of fresh air. The story also matches the players progress, as the player progresses furthur towards the end of the game the story gets closer to Sheppard's deployment, and this is a great way of tellingt a story.

Challenge - If you enjoy taking a challenge and fighting long battles only to be swarmed with more guards, this is definitely the game for you. I personally felt like the combat in Half-Life 2 was easy, whereas this takes combat to a whole new level.

Developer - The Developer himself agreed that it had a very rocky beginning. He understands that he made mistakes. And so, he's working on this game still. Rectifying some of the mistakes.

Cons-
Level Design - The levels seemed really bare. There were very few props in the levels, which meant that the levels just didn't feel very alive. I think if there was a bit more decor/props in some of the levels where you do nothing, (All Seeing Eye) The player would have more to do than wait for guards to arrive.

The journey of Sheppard through this game didn't feel very well put together, I thought that there was a fair few teleporters than neccessary, and while sure, going from Nova Prospekt to a space station would probably require a teleporter, I felt that there was far too many teleporters and it just felt like a cheap way of introducing a new environment.
Two chapters in a row had the exact same layout, (Go to one place, press a button, Do combat, go to other place, press a button, do combat, move to exit.) These were two consecutive chapters and it felt like the same scene done twitce.

Story - The game didn't have much of a story, while the flashbacks had their own play, it didn't really make up for lack of story that the game had. I didn't feel like I was following a story, I felt like I was just guided in a direction. Which if this was under the idea that GMan is just guiding Sheppard in the corect direction, it was carried out pretty well.
GMan, I don't really know if he was a good addition. While all Half-Life games have sightings of GMan, he just felt out of place. If GMan is guiding Freeman, then he shouldn't require help in Nova Prospekt. His sightings in Prospekt were mere jumpscares and I don't think that G-man would just appear for a split second and then dissapears, it makes no senes other to spook the player.

Also I felt than the reason Sheppard was placed wasn't a very good reason. He was put in Nova Prospekt to find and help Freeman but never actually sees Freeman. Though I notice that one of the maps is almost completely the same as prison_08 in Half-Life 2, (The map where Alyx and Freeman teleport to Kleiners lab before the uprising) So maybe this is a case of He just missed Freeman, like in Opposing Force had a similar scene. If this is of the same, then this is a really good reference.

Very combat heavy - As much as i enjoyed the challenge, I found that I kept dying, the combat levels in All Seeing Eye, as an example, were very unforgiving if you didn't have much health. Of course, a challenge is expected, though I found that even on the easy difficulty I struggled.

I may have missed a few things. But heres a summary
Clever way of story telling, but extremely combat heavy and challening.
I would urge anybody who wants more Half-Life to buy this game.#

Edit:

I have just played the game with the newer patch, And boy does it look SEXY!
The graphical overhaul is just beautiful!
Some of the previous issues i had with lack of decor and props were mostly gone. However toward the later game i didn't see much more similarity.

I really liked that Combine Power Co has a new twitst with some Hunter Fights!!!

This is an amazing mod. I don't understand why everybody hates it so much. Rich must have poured his heart and soul into this mod, but a lot of people just don't seem to like it! WHY? He recently fixed the lighting, (which is awesome) and the smoke that comes out of the shotgun is really cool too. This mod seriously needs more fans. I honestly think its worth the $8-$10. (?) (i forgot how much it was lol) But seriously. If you hadn't bought it yet, I think you should try it.

Let me start by stating the obvious:

Prospekt isn't HL3 - a fact that should be readily apparent but seemed to get the game a whole lot of hate shortly after release from fans of the franchise, especially after all the hype leading up to the launch.

What Prospekt IS, though, is a loveletter to HL2 and those fans. A one-man passion project with great playability - something to do for a few hours instead of whittling matchstick statues of GabeN. Gameplay wise, the level design stands out as most people have said; the combat is very reminiscent of HL combat but with challenging (though not unbeatable) pacing. It has a great visual appeal - there is one section especially that I found striking (and you'll know when you see it!) and the voice acting a cut above.

All in all, it definitely scratched the itch! Would recommend, esp. while on sale.

A good balance of challange within naturally and organically designed levels. It reeks of a classic half life 2 feeling, and takes after the best of it's combat. Parts of the maps still resonate in my memory, even months after playing it.
A free mod is The Citizen. A great half life two mod. One of the best! But, that is how much you should get for a free mod. Prospekt comes with large and original maps, a couple of hours of gameplay, and hundreds of custom assets. It's worth money. It's it's own game.
In Gaben's own words, "What's not to like?"

When I initially bought this game, I really liked it despite all its faults. But in the end you can't deny that it is a more than competent game, it looks good, it sounds good and it plays good. A lot of the hate, I think, came from a crowd of people who were dying to get some new Half Life material, this is a Valve approved game, but it wasn't made by Valve but it sure stirred people up and it seems like people were expecting it to be on par with Half Life 3 or something. But this was made by one man, not an entire team of people, and for just one guy this is a damn good game. One major positive I can give is the graphics, the dev must have really modified the engine to put out graphics that look as good as these! It really helps to give the game a kind of depressing mood, it makes the bright areas brighter and the dark areas darker which really improves the atmosphere.

Sure it has it's faults, but the dev listens and the most recent update has made the game much better than the initial variant. I do think that saying this has a 'rich story' is pushing it a little too far, the story is a little bare. I feel that this game gets a lot of undeserved hate because thay feel the need to stack it up against other games in the series, It's not a masterpiece but for a few hours it will keep you entertained with some challenging gameplay and some very interesting setpiece moments.

The game takes place after the events that happened at black mesa and follows up on what has happened to Andrian Shephard after the encounter with gman at the end of opposing force.

\\\\SPOILERS:Shephard is woken up from stassis by the gman to help Freeman in his fight against the combine.( I won't say more than that since that is basically the gist of it) \\\\

I'll start with the pros:
-The game looks amazing, its probably one of the nicest looking HL games I have seen made by the source engine rivaling even the ones made by valve
-The game gives closure to a forgotten character in the franchise and iirc GabeN said that this is canon don't quote me on that though
-The game is challenging and forces the player to learn the mechanics of HL more deeply than the actual games.
-Great ending

Cons:
-Enemies aren't really varied (There was like a couple headcrabs, headcrab zombies and like 2 hunters throughout the enitre game)
-Although the games challenge is welcome for me, I know there are people who are frustrated at it because they can't even beat it at an easy difficulty.
-Very short for a 10 dollar game I think I spent more time playing minerva than this and it was free
-I would have liked to be on xen a bit longer than what was allowed.
-Never really explains why Freeman needs the help or how Shephard got there.

Overall the game is pretty good but is a little rough around the edges, I hope to see more of what this developer has to offer later on with other games he is going to make and keeps the criticisms I said about this game in mind when developing the next one.

The issue of this game is at most theres an hour to two hours of gameplay, the \"story\" is given in flashback audio which with the way their given in a blinding flash can lead to a mistep or falling into a combine trap. the combine\'s health are moddified to be extraly high..and the results of what you did in the end, you learn nothing about the results...

POSSIBLE SPOILERS

Prospekt is a game for architecture lovers, hardcore NPC fighters, Combine enthusiasts, and the ones who loved Half Life: Opposing Force. However, the game REALLY requires improvements on its final stage, occurances of puzzles, and some loose ends tied on some of its script timing and lore.

Script timing - The flashback audio starts too late on some of the elevators, so the audio gets drowned out after being shot at once the elevator has arrived.

Puzzles - It felt like there was only 4 puzzles to the game, it would make it feel more like Half-Life if there was at least 2 to 4 more puzzles.

Lore - Freeman was Gman's wild card. Why would he take Shepard from his oh-so-important stasis just to help Freeman because he is "cornered by Combine and needs help", and why would his actions in the game affect if Freeman was cornered by Combine or not?

The final stage - The final stage was really rediculous, as even turning the AI to easy did not help. The amount of health kits is too low, and the amount of Combine is too high. Nobody could survive well at all with barely any cover, especially when it's the elites your talking about. The combine ball knockoff attempts feels original to what HL would do, but providing only 4 health kits and a constant swarm of Combine soldiers and elites? Not very fun.

Overall, with the constant support shown by the author (which I adore), I believe this game can be among some of the best out there, especially if theres custom textures, skins, music, and gameplay! (It was a shame there was not a custom weapon. All Half-Life mods have those.)
