What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Early Access is at the core of our studio. Holodrive has been playable since the second month of development by anyone who wanted an invitation, and open since the 10th month to everyone with a browser and internet connection. We’ve been building a community of passionate players that have been helping us build the game since before Steam ever had the Early Access program.

Check out this playlist (organized by date) and see how the game has evolved since the first prototype

We believe Holodrive’s future lies with its community and because of that we’ve been very open as we develop the game. Our players have helped us balance weapons, find bugs, create levels and we’ve even implemented (and removed) some features because of their feedback! We want to keep doing this, we want people to collaborate with us in order to make a game that everyone enjoys to play with their friends.

Please bear in mind that Holodrive is going to be a Free to Play title, but right now we’ll be charging a small fee so you can help fund the development of the game. We won’t be mad if you wish to wait until we change pricing, tho. :)”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Our development process is highly iterative and we do like taking time in order to do the best we can, because of that it's really hard to say for how long the game will be in Early Access. Our goal is to have the final version ready by the end of this year (2016), keep in mind this schedule could change and if it does we’ll talk about why it happened with everyone.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We’ve been working super hard for over 2 years and we still have ways to go. We want the full version to feature more unique game modes, more maps, more weapons, more customization sets, Ranked mode, Party system, a better integration with the steam platform (Cards, Trading, etc…), more languages (russian, french, german, etc…). There are also a bunch of current features that will get a facelift like the current Main Menu UI and many of the maps' environment art.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is fully playable, we update it with new builds very often and you can follow us on social networks and twitch to see when a new update is coming. If you find any bugs, glitches or exploits please report them to us using any communication channel and we’ll try to fix it as soon as possible!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Holodrive is going to be a Free to Play title on Steam. We believe free-to-play is the way to go for this kind of multiplayer game, since every new player adds value to the game. Our idea is to make a fair game where everyone can get anything by putting time into playing.

Right now during early access we are looking for players who wish to make a difference by helping us develop the game.

So, even though we want everyone to join us as soon as possible, we want to start slow and make the game better before that. That is why we're opening a waitlist for people to join the game. If you don't want to purchase the Early Access Pack, you can wait for a key on the waiting list. You can still buy the Supporter Pack, though: it will give you some awesome in-game goodies that will only be available during this period, as well as an extra key to gift a friend!

With that being said, if you think this is too complicated and you decide to wait until the game is freely available on Steam, we won’t be mad. Feel free to follow our community, you’re awesome anyways :)”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Right now we already have a community involved in the development process, but we want everyone to be in the same page as we migrate to Steam Forums.

We’ll be doing Twitch Streams, we usually post teasers and answer your questions on our Twitter. Wanna see what we’re doing, known bugs, vote on features and check if we’re being lazy? We have an open Trello! In the game there’s also a Feedback button that you can send a message directly to the entire team’s e-mail (so be nice to us).

The game will be constantly updated with new features and bugfixes and you’ll always be able to contact us and tell us what you think :)”

The Early Access Supporter Pack

The Early Access Supporter pack is a thank you from the developers to anyone who wishes to support us in shaping the future of Holodrive. This pack was made to share with a friend, because that's what Holodrive is all about! :D

  • One copy of Holodrive for you (Only if you don't own it already!)
  • A 2nd copy of the game to gift a friend!
  • The Scout set (from Team Fortress 2)
  • Ultimate Dummy set
  • 2300 Bits
  • 2 Holopacks
  • 2 Legacypacks
  • 2 XP Boosts
  • Our eternal love!

Every pack (Holopacks and Legacypacks) gives you one random customization, so you can turn your robot into the most fabulous one out there. Also, the sets are EXCLUSIVE to our Early Access Supporters, meaning you're gonna be envy of the battlefield whenever you're wearing them!

About This Game

Holodrive is a super fast-paced 2D multiplayer shooter about exploding robos with crazy weapons and collecting outfits! When Holocorp created Dummy its purpose was to be a companion robot, your fabulous best friend. No one could predict these robots would turn out to be obsessed with exploding each other! Now they compete in special arenas and are equipped with a vast arsenal of guns, an unhealthy dose of unpredictable power-ups and wearing the most diverse accessories available. Nothing can go wrong!

Holodrive is going to be a Free to Play title in the future. You can read more about it down below.

Destroy other players in fast-paced combat

No robot stays materialized long in the arena. Dummys love exploding each other only to be materialized again and continue their spree. Use the map to your advantage and surprise your enemies by teleporting right into the combat or hiding behind anti-bullet barriers!

Equip and collect a vast arsenal of weapons

Holocorp has designed the Dummy to be able to carry up to 7 weapons at the same time. Pick up weapons and ammo as you platform through the levels or grab weapons from enemies you kill. Get different weapons by opening packs, craft them or equip your free weapon that’s available on rotation every 3 days!

Mobility, Versatility, Unpredictability

Every Dummy is equipped with a jetpack, your robot is made to move fast through the arena, gaining momentum in ramps and using power ups for efficient traversal. Also by using random Power ups, Dummys are able to turn the tide of battle and surprise their opponents with effects like Disarm, Invincibility or Invisibility!

Become the Most Fabulous

Customizing your robot was Holocorp’s original intent. Hat, head, torso, arms, legs, skin and jetpack are fully customizable! Open Holopacks and complete your album with sets like the Shinobi and become a ninja; or mix it with pieces of the Buccaneer’s Loot to become the best pirate-ninja ever!

Unlock anything and everything, just by playing

Holodrive is going to be Free to Play, but that doesn’t mean paywalls behind everything or that those who spend money are going to have advantages. You’ll be able to collect any item by just playing the game! Open Holopacks to get a random item or dematerialize your copies and craft them into stuff you don’t have. There are even super-rare version of items available!

It's like Team Fortress 2 met Strike Force Heroes and decided to have a threesome with Mario Kart.

The only downside is lag

Quake meets side scrollers. A must play for any fan of the 2d genre.

The game is fantastic. Runs really well. Very simple to learn. Guns are unique and chaotic. Best of all, bringing arena shooters back <3.

My love for you.

Is it fun? Yeah. But there's quite a few glaring issues that I can see so far... Gonna keep this brief.

It's cute
It's fast-paced and engaging
It's nostalgic, reminding me of the flash shooters I used to play

The Default Weapon: This thing is ... It's meh. It feels like they're punishing you for respawning with this thing, and there's no replacement like there is with other weapons. So you can't personalize this thing, and if anyone has a pick-up weapon, you're more or less ♥♥♥♥ed. The basic gun should be, well, basic, but not inferior in functionality.

Could use some tweaks.. The Grenade Launcher is Godly, Snipers are, hit or miss.. You hit and win, or miss and die.. Rocket launchers: I've seen too many people just rush to shoot these in my face...
Powerups: Well, most of these are alright. The Ice thing feels a bit useless, and the electric shock powerup takes a while to activate for not much in terms of payoff.. Then Invisibility lets you kick someone's teeth in with minimal retaliation capacity...

The Shop: Yes, you can potentially get everything by playing, but it seems they want to limit HOW MUCH you can get in your total amount of play time for free. You get "Bits", which are the currency for everything, which you gamble away, for cosmetics/weapons. Except the weapons are mixed in with the cosmetics, you only get 10 bits per LEVEL UP, and it takes 200 bits in order to afford to gamble for the slim chance at a new weapon to equip.

Can I recommend this game? Not yet, but hopefully I can soon.

The best way to put it is I have a love/hate relationship with this game.
Mechanics wise, it's extremely similar to a flash game I used to play called Raze- in essence, it's a 8 man murderfest. You have your standard (Team) Deathmatch, and also a unique mode called "collectors," where you need to kill enemies, collect their power and deposit it at a bank. And this is where the love/hate comes in.

Collectors can be extremely fun when the teams are equal- but usually, they aren't. A lot of the players have a mentality where if they join a game they can't die. Ever. You'll see a person come in, get shot a few times, and then leave. This applies to any gamemode, but Collectors is where it hurts the most. You'll need people on the defensive, taking energy from the enemy's core, but also people on the defense making sure people don't steal any from yours. So whenever this balance is broken, the game becomes unfair. During a 4v4, getting an ultra kill is extremely satisfying- but if it's some 3v2 where our team is kicking ♥♥♥, it just kinda loses its fun for both me and the enemies. My teamates might like it, who knows? In the Deathmatch modes, people leaving is a bit less of an issue unless it turns into a 1v3 or something.

All this, I can deal with- I'll get a little mad, sure, but that's only a few games. But there's one issue, a glaring one that's an absolute pain and is in every match. All the players are de-synced.
You can get hit by bullets meters away from you, you can get killed by people not even on the same elevation as you, and that's whenever I really question why this is a thing. I can get lag and some teleporting or rubberbanding, but this desync is absolutely insane and really ruins the game whenever I manage to swan dive through an enemy's bullets flawlessly, but apparently one hit me and I'm god damn dead. This is especially annoying with the 1-Hit Kill rocket launchers, which you can see the rockets perfectly fine, but even if you're miles above it, you're dead because of it. This way of dealing with lag in a PvP game like this is a way to make you mad due to stray bullets counting as hits.

I know I spoke really negatively about the game, but whenever the players have an equal skill level and the lag isn't too noticeable, the game is EXTREMELY fun. It can degrade to absolute madness at times that's left me in stitches, though some of the unlockable weapons are a bit unbalanced. For example, the Minigun can rip things to shreds in seconds, and the shuriken gun thing's shuriken mines last a little too long. Other than that, the weapons are pretty nicely balanaced and seem to encourage getting the jump and flanking enemies as most of them can kill pretty quickly. Though variety in the starting weapons would be nice, or at least make it viable enough so you don't die as soon as you spawn.

All in all, this game has a lot of good, but hampered by a small but significant amount of bad. It's also pretty cheap. Though, it hasn't garnered much of a following yet, and I'm fearful that the community might die out within its early months.

This game, while still in development, is really good. It's still missing some features, the optimization isn't all that good and the maps aren't that diverse, but for the price of 42 cents on steam it's totally worth it. Really fun mix of little big planet and quake in a weird way
