What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We're huge fans of bridge-builders and physics based simulation games, and our main intention during development is to create a gaming experience that will satisfy players we share this passion with.

At the core of Poly Bridge is the Sandbox, which is what we used to create the levels of the game, and what we hope will ultimately be the tool that you will use to tinker with the game's mechanics, explore new directions that we hadn't even thought of and share your creations with everyone.

To do so we believe the best course of action is to release a fully-featured game with the single player Campaign, while keeping the Sandbox and community features of the game open enough to allow integrating feedback, feature requests and suggestions from players who enjoy the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The plan is to transition to full release in between late 2015 and early 2016.
With that said, plans do change and scopes get bigger, but we do promise to keep you informed all the way along.

If you would like to follow development more closely, a good place to start is our public Roadmap: https://trello.com/b/9IS3LKpk/poly-bridge-roadmap

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Poly Bridge will differ from Early Access by having:

  • More content, more Campaign worlds and levels, more polish, more vehicles, fewer bugs!
  • Final Sandbox and Steam Workshop integration
  • Community suggested features and requests

We'll work hard to deliver the most polished and fun bridge-building game you've ever seen, while also staying flexible enough to bring on feature request and suggestions from players.

The largest piece of work that will change is the Sandbox mode, which is the main reason we chose to do Early Access.

With your help, and the help of the rest of the community, we hope to deliver a Sandbox mode with all the tools & toys you could dream of, allowing you and us to create endless amounts of puzzles and content for everyone to enjoy and be challenged by.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current Early Access version features the majority of the single-player campaign mode, as well as a beta of the Sandbox, including submitting and downloading extra levels in the Steam Workshop.
The social sharing features of animated GIF replays are there, as well as the ability to give us feedback in-game at any point.

More levels and worlds are also being added to the single-player Campaign mode, and we're aiming to deliver loads of different levels, worlds and vehicles for players to explore.

Please keep in mind the Sandbox is heavily under development, which means that any Sandbox layouts you save and/or submit to the Workshop might break as work progresses on the Sandbox and level sharing features.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Considering the advanced stage of development, and to be fair to past, present and future players of Poly Bridge, pricing before and after Early Access will not change.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“You and the community will be at the very heart of Poly Bridge during Early Access.

Our public Roadmap is here: https://trello.com/b/9IS3LKpk/poly-bridge-roadmap

At any point in-game, you can access the Feedback menu from the top-left, which allows you to send us a message, optionally attaching a screenshot.

We're hoping that this system will encourage consistent feedback from players, as it doesn't require ever leaving the game and provides us with as much information as possible.

We will also of course be active in the community groups, on various social media (Twitter, Reddit) and we can always be reached via email at any point.”

Build 0.77b-p1 (Reinforced Roads)

Hello again Engineers,
another quick update today as a follow-up to yesterday's changes about how roads are simulated.

After more testing and receiving very useful feedback from the community, we're introducing a way to allow road reinforcement.
This should greatly minimize the current issue of roads being over-loaded while keeping the game's balance mostly unchanged.

Before
Notice how the left piece of road is the first to break off, and the rest follows

Reinforcing road with a wooden strut
You can now place another strut on top of an existing road strut to reinforce it

After
With the load minimized on the road strut, it's smooth sailing for this van

We'll still be adjusting values in the coming days to find the best balance possible, but wanted to get this change out there to hear your feedback and ideas.

Stress Indicator
We've also added a useful stress indicator at the bottom of the screen, visible during Simulation, which shows the current highest stress value across the bridge

Thanks for your support
We highly appreciate the feedback we've been receiving, in particular we would like to thank 'I_am_a_great_magician' for his input and ideas in strengthening the new road system.

Please let us know what you think of these changes and thanks for your ongoing support during the development of the game!

Early Access Update #9 - Build 0.77b

We have a quick update for you Engineers. We’re releasing this update a little earlier than usual because we want to test out a new method of calculating the physics of roads, further details below. But first, a couple new features!

Δ Achievements
Each level has a new goal 'Under Budget and Under 100% Stress'. The mark of a true engineer is building structures that can stand up to repeated use. Each level completed this way will be marked with a Δ in its tooltip and the level tile will turn blue. As before your completion stats for the Campaign are shown at the top of the World Map.
Your Achievements are now viewable from the World Map and there are also new Unbreakable achievements for each World. You may have to run the last level of each World again for the achievements to register. A few budgets have been adjusted on existing levels to make them more achievable.

Steam Leaderboards
Leaderboards have been added for each Campaign level, viewable from the World Map also. When you successfully complete a Campaign level the Leaderboards will display alongside the histograms. Your own score and place will display as well as the top five. Click the ‘Friends Only’ button to see how you compare to your Steam Friends! Try to get the lowest budget and claim the #1 spot or challenge your Steam Friends and prove your engineering skill.

New Roads
The big change of this patch is a new way of simulating roads. Previously we were using some reinforcement logic but have never been happy with it, and it also opened up a few exploits to ‘cheat’ the game.
The new road simulation is now more reliable and accurate, however it also offers less compressive resistance and will tend to ‘tear apart’ a bit more easily than before, which means you might find a number of your existing bridge designs won’t work anymore.
Generally it’s easy enough to tweak your existing designs to work again, and often requires thinking a bit more about re-directing tensile forces away from the road and into the surrounding structure.
Please let us know what you think of this change!

New Features
  • Two Campaign levels replaced in Snow Drift: 3-6 Up & Away and 3-14 Stop & Go
  • Steam Leaderboards Added
  • New Δ achievement for each level and World

Bug Fixes
  • Quick Access Wheel correctly shows available materials now
  • Restart events now labelled correctly in Level Info
  • Missing Level Names have been restored in English
  • Pasting and Undo/Redo will no longer generate a sound for each piece generated
  • Various minor bug fixes

Improvements
  • An ‘Are you sure?’ dialogue will come up when attempting to exit the game from within a level
  • When moving a joint red highlights will display when a strut is unable to move in the direction pulled
  • Steam Achievements and Leaderboards now visible from World Map
  • Various exploits removed

Next Update

The new manual and campaign world Tropical Paradise are coming along nicely but won’t be ready until next patch as scheduled. Look forward to those!

About This Game

Unleash your engineering creativity with an engaging and fresh bridge-building simulator with all the bells and whistles.
Enjoy hours of physics-based puzzle solving in the Campaign and then jump in the Sandbox to create your own bridge designs and puzzles.
Challenge friends and the rest of the Steam Workshop community to solve your puzzles and download more levels submitted by other players.

Check out the User Submissions Gallery at http://gallery.drycactus.com !

And here's our Roadmap: https://trello.com/b/9IS3LKpk/poly-bridge-roadmap

We put lots of work in the physics of the game and the result is an accurate and consistent simulation, which also gives you access to loads of different building blocks, including hydraulic pistons to create shape-changing and moving bridges, suspension bridges, cable, steel, iron, and more.

Enjoy hours of bridge-building fun with loads of levels to solve, ranging from simple light car bridges to multi-deck draw-bridges and jumps, just to name a few!
Levels get increasingly challenging from the engineering aspect and restrictions are also imposed on the resources you can use to build your bridge.

What would an awesome bridge-builder game be without an equally awesome Sandbox?
Go wild and create the most complex bridge the world has ever seen, or just an absurd creation that pushes the mechanics of the game in a new direction, and if you're feeling like it publish your design online as a puzzle level on the Workshop for everyone to try and solve!

Download hundreds of extra levels from the Workshop!
We'll also be featuring the most original and fun bridge designs that are submitted, making it easier for you to find the ones that are worth the challenge.

One of our favorite features of the game!
Save a super cool looking animated GIF of your bridge in all its glory (or failure!) and save it locally, upload it to the Poly Bridge Gallery and/or share it on Twitter!

Excellent game - it's clean, simple and fun, with developing complexity that becomes really enjoyable.

I'm not so sure about some of the newer maps, I think the complexity grows a bit fast vs when I first played it. Also, the trace tool mechanic could use being more discoverable - a helper popup when you first get a suspension bridge map would be really good.

I've been working on a more comprehensive review, but looking through the ones already available, I feel as though I don't need to go into depth about game mechanics.

To start, here's a short list of my personal Pros and Cons.

Pros:
- The physics are fantastic
- The game gets rather challenging fairly quickly, but never seems to give an unfair challenge
- With the construction system, on most of the levels there's room for an extremely large ammount of Creativity. (Notice I said Most. I'll get to that later.)
- The soundtrack is relaxing, and this is one of the few games I would buy a soundtrack for (Also will mention this later)
- Customer Suport is extremely good.

Cons:
- Like I mentioned previously, most of the levels offer room for Creativity. Unfortunately, there are a handful of levels that ristrict so many of the peices that there's only a few ways to complete the level. These are by far the worst part of the game.

The game itself, despite the small quantity of poor levels, is extremely fun to play. I'd spent over 10 hours playing the game when my save got deleted, but I enjoy the game enough to replay throught the game again.

When I recently started playing the game again, I had some technical issues that were causing my music to create constant popping noises. Long story short, I couldn't fix the audio due to unrelated issues with my PC, and ultimately couldn't play the game with music. When the creator saw my forums post, one of them added me (Christian_Akacro), and gave me a free copy of the sound track to use while playing the game.

Looking through the forums a bit, the creator seem to be extremely active, and seems to respond to any and all messages he can. I really appreciate the effort that's been but into the game and the community, especially considering that it was independantly created.

To sum up everything, the game is extremely well polished, and is pretty much exactly what the trailers make it look like.

9/10, worth playing through

I bought this game for my son, its a wonderfuly educational but fun way to learn about applied physics, you build the bridge/ramp/lift what ever and run the simulation to see if it works, couple that with the leveling up part of the game and its rather intriguing, or if your more of a free spirit you can do the sand box mode and make problems for yourself to solve, not only do you see if the bridge works but you can also see the stress points and work on and improve upon your design, and remember as my seven year old now says "triangles are your friends" lol
