Twitch Integration

A new kind of collaborative bridge-building experience is now possible with our Twitch Integration!

Twitch
Twitch is a live streaming video platform, allowing anyone to broadcast their game-play sessions and for an audience to watch the stream and participate in a chat.

We took it a step further and created a web-based version of Poly Bridge that allows viewers of a Twitch stream to take part in the building process itself!

A new kind of viewer experience
Viewers are no longer restricted to the chat-box, instead use an in-browser version of the game to build along with the streamer, submitting their suggestions on what and how to build

For Streamers
Poly Bridge lets the streamer play at their own pace and control how the interaction works, allowing for a tailored and entertaining viewer experience

To find out more on how to use the integration in-game or to find live a stream to participate in, head over to http://twitch.drycactus.com

1.0.4 Patch

Another day, another patch!
In today's patch we introduce some small improvements requested by players, as well as fixing a few minor bugs and tightening security around leaderboard submissions.

New launch parameters
Two new launch parameters have been added:
  • -noscaling : prevents the UI from automatically scaling since it can cause issues on some Linux multi-monitor setups
  • -nobackground : prevents the game from running in the background since it can cause GPU over-use on some setups

Grid changes
As requested by a few players, disabling grid-snapping will no longer entirely hide the grid, but rather make it more transparent, allowing you to still maintain the visual guides for symmetry but not forcing you to build on-grid.
The game will now also correctly remember your grid settings between play-sessions.

Leaderboard cheating
We've implemented more client-side checks to minimize submissions from hackers, and are almost finished with our automated tool to monitor leaderboards 24/7 and ban offending players.
A reminder that we use a server-side shadow-banning system, more info at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stealth_banning

Bug fixes
  • Fixed exploit on Wrecking Ball vehicle which allowed 'cheated' solutions to 100m level
  • Line tracer would occasionally crash when filling with segments of 1.0m length
  • Some minor bugs with the Twitch integration

In keeping with the tradition here's a cool picture from our artist Javier

And as always a big thank you to all our players for providing feedback, bug reports and great ideas to improve the game!

I was really curious to see what this bridge building game was about.
I am a fan of building games.
Its not like a 'regular' bridge building game where you have a flat road and have to build a bridge across, you have tons of different materials, concepts and ws of making your bridge to work.£
I recommend this game for sure.

Poly Bridge is a great and most in depth bridge builders around. It has the most versatile ways in building bridges and scenarios for the workshop. There is a ton of user created content for more fun than just whats in the base game. But with that comes a certain type of thinking. When building bridges you have to think outside the box, in plainer terms, you have to think of a better way of making bridges then just the basic straight line with supports. You can use ropes and metal bars to make the strongest bridge.

In short, Poly Bridge is a great and indepth bridge builder then some of the other ones out there. You have much more control over the bridges you're building and the strongest parts of it to make it take whatever truck your thinking to drive across.

This game is incredibly frustrating in that sometimes I want to build something silly and outlandish and see if I can get it to work, but they limit you to only a certain amount over budget. All I need is the ability to turn off budget limits completely, even if that means I don't pass the level or whatever. I really don't care about beating the game, I just want to have a little fun and your limits mean I'm not having any.

When I first made the discovery of Poly Bridge my mind flashed to the Bridge Constructor which is a franchise by Clockstone Studio. They are very good games especially at the budget that they were made at. I enjoyed them immensely. I believe that they fit a relatively small niche quite nicely. As a result, I was skeptical that another title could prove to be a success. However, after over 1000 reviews on Steam with 89% of them being positive the game has been a critical success.

What is Poly Bridge?

The title makes the game pretty self-explanatory. It takes polygon graphics and combines them with the mechanics of a bridge simulator to be Poly Bridge. The title is an engineer's dream. As a result, I wish that my uncle - who was one of the finest road engineers in Australia - was alive to play the game. Although he may have seen it as an extension of his work I believe that he would have been impressed. It seems like the type of game that even the professionals would be thoroughly impressed with.

Gameplay

The mechanics in the game are plentiful. This is in significant part owing to a wonderfully crafted event system. Things such as hydraulics can be designed for drawbridges, etc. One of the most enjoyable mechanics in the game is the jump system. You can essentially build a jump for your cars and bikes to jump from and as long as they clear the gap required it will be considered a success.

The mission system often relies on unrealistic bridge construction design that will both frustrate and inspire the imagination of players. They also demand players to meet multiple objectives. Thankfully, any mission can be skipped if it proves too difficult.

Presentation

The presentation is clean and well designed. The UI is very simple and easy to use. The utilization of the grid system makes bridge architecture a breeze and the buttons are well placed.

One of the strengths of the design of the UI and the buttons are that every option has a hotkey. This makes things not only easier but faster as well.

There is also a well-implemented tutorial to provide the basic training that players will need. This is a great feature of the presentation. Finally, for those that need it there is also a well-presented manual that is accessible from within the game.

Bridge Constructor Vs Poly Bridge

In comparison to Bridge Constructor, as much fun as I had with those particular games, this game offers significantly more. The gameplay provides greater depth and there is a lot more that the game enables the player to do. Though it remains a viable alternative I would advise newcomers to purchase this one.

Is it Steamified?

From a Steamification perspective, Poly Bridge is the Golden Gate Bridge. The game contains trading cards and Steam achievements. Secondly, the game delivers a competitive edge by incorporating Steam Leaderboards. Finally, and what satisfies me most of all is that the game incorporates the Steam workshop into the game. There is a level editor which enables players to create new levels and add them to the workshop for others to download.

Thankfully, the Steam Workshop incorporation has not fallen on deaf ears. Community members have already, as of writing, contributed well over one thousand new levels. They have further added two hundred autoplay pieces, 17 replicas of real life bridges including the famous George Washington Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge, 110 contraptions and 50 works of art. Hence, we can confirm that the community is an active one. The result is obvious. The community has given Poly Bridge a lifespan far beyond that of the over one hundred levels available in the base game.

Verdict

Poly Bridge is not only a critical success but also a very pleasurable experience for all types of gamers. The game teaches you the mechanics of the game in a very thorough manner. This will enable casual gamers through to advanced gamers to get their groove on. The presentation is immaculate and well considered. If Dry Cactus are interested in further developing this game or creating a sequel I'd like to advise them to take up Tharodan's idea and create a management feature on top of the great puzzle game.

The game features a 105-mission campaign mode with scenarios of good variety, thanks to the event system that triggers hydraulics (for drawbridges), ships, cars, and planes. Missions can also rely on “unrealistic” bridge structures like ramps and loops, further increasing diversity. Missions may also introduce checkpoints that require cars to pass through or turn around at specific locations. While scenarios are difficult, any mission can be freely skipped. A scenario editor and Steam workshop support are also included for even more content. The interface is done well, with the ability to copy-and-paste existing bridge designs and easily make arcs. Different materials (road, wood, steel, hydraulics, rope, cable) are used to construct each bridge, sometimes in limited supplies. Red static joints are used to fix the bridge to its surroundings, while split joints (formed by double-clicking) are used for draw bridges. The physics simulation is plausible. The elaborate event system, along with the ability to create multiple solutions, makes Poly Bridge stand out.

Poly Bridge is my favorite game I’ve played all year. I can’t recommend it enough to those with any sense of creativity. On the bright side, you both get to create, and if you’re not feeling laid back you get to watch plenty of stuff fall apart and get destroyed, too. No matter what you’re feeling, it’s there in this game. I don’t have a deep understanding of physics, nor does most math appeal to me, but the game wraps it up a neat and accessible package that I’ll keep playing as long as there are more levels to conquer.

A solid bridge building game with lots of levels and variety, and a better ux than most games in the genre. Copy/paste, flip, and curve building all go a long way toward removing the tedium of building regular structures in the game.
