What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We wanted to release this version since this first build is fully playable and has a relatively self-contained storyline, however our ultimate vision for The Museum of You is something much larger. In future versions, we hope to include more artists and galleries, polish and fine-tune the levels we have, and add more minigames for players to enjoy. This Early Access version of the game was developed almost entirely by a two person team, but we've already begun building out a larger team of talented developers, animators, writers, and designers to contribute to future versions.

We are committed to investing time, effort, and resources necessary to showcase a wide range of artists, do justice to their works, and create an engaging game experience with a satisfyingly interwoven narrative - all of which will be much easier with player feedback! ”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We hope to be out of Early Access approximately 6-12 months after initial launch.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We hope to include significantly more art content and narrative branches, new voice actors, more built out gameplay and mechanics, and a clearer overarching storyline. It's our goal to create a large, immersive world featuring a wide range of art and artists, as well as tell a complex and nuanced story that is spread throughout different narrative branches.

While the later versions of the game will likely still make use of the low-poly, minimalist style seen in the early access version, we hope to spend more time fine-tuning the details and plan to add more levels and branches that feature higher-poly styles for contrast if possible.

This early access version includes pieces of this vision, but ultimately we plan for future versions to be much more built out, both in scope and polish.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We've been calling this version a "Prototype", but I think that doesn't quite do this early version justice. In its current state it is a fully self-contained narrative, with about 2-4 hours of gameplay, features half a dozen different puzzle / minigame types, and the galleries contain art from a dozen different contributing artists. There are 25 different endings that can be unlocked by playing through different narrative branches. The current puzzles and minigames are relatively basic (platformers, hidden objects, a low-poly sisyphus simulator, etc.) but I think they are representative of the types of levels, mechanics, and minigames we hope to include in later versions. Feel free to refer to our "About This" section for more details!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to gradually raise the price as we ship new content and features.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Hoping to get playtesters, feedback, and maybe even recruit team members from the playerbase we find with this demo/early access version.

If you're interested in reaching out with feedback or have questions about joining the development team, feel free to email us at museumofyou.game@gmail.com!”

Reviews

“A strangely philisophical experience that may speak to some, but mostly does not qualify as a video game. This is a fake review.”
NA/100 – 2223 Games

“A clearly unfinished and somewhat incomprehensible mish-mash of The Stanley Parable, LSD Dream Emulator, The Beginner's Guide, and the kind of strange contemporary art that mostly gets made fun of by its viewers. This is also a fake review.”

About This Game

The Museum of You is a choose-your-own-adventure walking simulator primarily set in a series of futuristic galleries featuring the works of various contemporary artists. As you explore the “museum” and the surreal void space it resides in, you’ll find a variety of galleries to explore, choices to make, worlds to discover, and minigames to either enjoy or suffer through - depending on the kind of experience you’re looking for.

This initial early access version contains about 2-3 hours of total gameplay, 30 possible endings, multiple core narrative branches, and a collection of art and music from a dozen different contemporary artists working in various mediums. While initially presented as story driven by a single narrator, the game actually consists of a number of characters including you (the player), dave (whom you control), and several others posing as different narrators. This version is still somewhat of a demo/playable trailer in many ways, but it does still feature an ambitious scope and narrative in line with smaller indie games of its genre. V1 is still in the writing and early development process, but is planned to be significantly larger, aiming to contain around 100 unique endings, 10-15 core narrative paths, dozens of minigames, a compelling meta-narrative, and displays of hundreds of works by dozens of artists from a wide range of backgrounds and mediums.

This early version of TMOY is based on a fictional video game described in the short story aptly titled "The World's Least Playable Game" by Justin Wong, who also co-authored this adaptation alongside lead developer Cean Mindeman. The original game concept was described as “unplayable”, “impossible to code”, and “a miserable gaming experience” in the piece of experimental fiction it was first imagined in. Through the development process, this iteration of The Museum of You has decidedly differentiated itself from that inspiration. It still maintains some of its thematically significant and intentionally “unplayable” spirit, but some efforts have been made to make it a (mostly) enjoyable experience for the player. As new versions and iterations are released, we hope to zero in on the best way to balance the original concept’s desire to torture its player with our desire to have at least a few people enjoy playing the game.

Welcome, to The Museum of You. What do you think you’ll do with your time here?
