Why Early Access?

“We have been working on developing the first version of the Hanako IP since we were in college back in 2008-2010. We've been working on this version, after-hours, after our jobs with no budget since June of 2013. We've reached the point that we have a solid foundation but we cannot possibly polish the game to the level it deserves without being able to generate some financial support, which Early Access affords us.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We will be in Early Access for 6-12 months ideally.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Early access will feature the following content:
  • At least 3 character classes (Kenshi, Naginatashi, Ninja with possible future introduction of the Ite [Archer])
  • 4 campaign maps (Half of the campaign line) and possibly some smaller dueling type maps and a tutorial.
  • The full combat system with abilities but a partially implemented skill tree or auto-assigned abilities with skill tree coming later.


The full version will contain the full-feature set of the game that we have marketed and discussed, including but not limited to:

  • All 4 character classes complete (Kenshi, Naginatashi, Ite and Ninja).
  • Full 7 map campaign covering both Hanako and Yamai Clan territories.
  • Replacement of 3 set abilities with our Skill Tree/Leveling system to offer players more options.
  • Better game flow, menus, UI treatments.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We have 3 maps with a 4th on the way and plan to release to early access with this version and 3 of our character classes in some iteration. We have two more character classes to polish fully for full-release with one of them being an internal requirement for Early Access release.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to gradually raise the price as we ship new content and ideas. The first Early Access release will roughly be about half of what our release price will be, specifically because it won't be a content-complete version of the game.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will release a variety of surveys and hold "Play with the Devs" events to gather feedback through Discord chats, forms and other means to gather data and do our best to develop a strong family and community to serve as the foundation for the full release of our studio's first game.”

Patch 0.1.190.0 - "Hit Detection Improvements, Grapple Improvements & More"

Changes/Fixes
- Hit detection has been reworked to be more accurate between client/servers.
- Physics for collision/hit detection has been revised to use PhysX and APEX so we can simplify physics at a distance (Something that made bots perform realy badly.
- Optimizations for bots/lots of characters. Game should run more smoothly with bots.
- Various changes to Kusarigama/Grappling code. Grapple should be much better/more responsive and not toss you across the map (sometimes).

- Various scoring fixes across all game modes to remove the possibility of "Draws".
- Fix for knockdown while blocking
- Fixed VIP corpse persistance
- Fixed scoring issues with some game modes
- Fixed some Kusarigama/Ninja animation mismatch (floating weapon) for some poses.
- Fixed a lot of Bot pathing in Yari Foothills and Gifu Crossroads

Other Changes
- Optimized all characters at distance so bots should be less crazy.
- Enabled -NUMBOTS=# to work properly
- Official servers will now be capped to 8 bots instead of 22.

About This Game


Journey Across Feudal Japan, on a symbolic campaign representing a personal trial of life and death of a lost loved one. Experience multiple levels and game modes to bring peace or chaos, in (up to) 24 player online battles.

Choose Warriors destined to decide the future of Japan: The Kenshi (Swordsman), Naginatashi (Pikeman), or Ninja (Assassin). All featuring their own style of combat, movement and weaponry.

Master Combat through discovery of different attacks, abilities and combos. Our combat system features multiple offensive stances driven by your movement, defensive techniques (such as the grappling hook) and abilities (ranging from acrobatic combos to multi-enemy sweeps to multi-hit combos).



What kind of gameplay is this game offering?

We plan to offer a multiplayer experience with several modes of gameplay taking familiar elements and expanding them to fit the game's backstory and to introduce fun and engaging new experiences. Combat is based on your movement direction and supplemented by abilities ranging from strong stunning dashes, to multi-hit combos and Master level abilities.

Any customization for the different character classes?
We are planning on adding some customization to the characters & weapons. Like all things this will be determined by effort needed/budget. We will likely add weapon skins before characters since our content team is limited.

Will the game have any single-player gameplay?
No this version won’t have any single player gameplay going on. That does not mean we don’t have plans for any just not for this title. The tutorial is single-player and you can play any map with/against AI.

Are you planning on bringing the game to other platforms?
Other systems is something we would like to strive for. If we can do it, what other systems we would go onto are still "up in the air" questions. Our first and foremost goal is making this game the best it can be for Steam.

What languages will this game be in?
Well English first and foremost but we plan to do at least 3-4 others. In fact we put out a survey to collect answers from you as to what language do you play your games in which you can fill out at language.hanakogame.com
