About This Game

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North is a co-op Action RPG that immerses you and your friends in a brutal new chapter in the War of the Ring. Snowblind Studios is in the unique position of drawing inspiration from both the literary and film rights to world of Middle-earth, allowing players to bloody their axes on a wide range of deadly enemies and traverse both established and never-before-seen locations. The result is a journey that is both epic and intimate, familiar yet unexpected.

Key Features:

  • Action Meets RPG - Intense, visceral, and satisfying combat. Rich, layered, and impactful character progression. In War in the North, you get both. Find and equip the best loot, upgrade your hero using a wide range of skills and items, and feel the intense satisfaction of rushing into real-time battles with friends by your side. Fight through the brutal realities of the war on all fronts that were brought to life in the lore. Immerse yourself and make your own mark on Middle-earth.
  • Co-op at its Core - Build your own fellowship of three heroes to confront the growing army in the North. The survival of your group and all of Middle-earth depends upon your uniquely skilled heroes working together. You must fight together or you will die alone, and these high stakes make the experience of playing together both socially engaging and incredibly satisfying. The first time you rescue a friend who has been grabbed by a troll and is desperately yelling for help, you will understand what we mean.
  • An Untold Story - While much attention and focus has been placed on the journey of the One Ring, the assault on Middle-earth hits all corners of the map. War in the North turns our attention towards an integral part of the storyline that is grounded in details within the books and various appendices. This is not someone else’s fight. This is your own effort to forage a way through the dark, dangerous, and unknown landscape, defending all that is yours. This is your war.

The combat and a lot of aspects of this game make it a fun and really enjoyable experience. It's a pretty straight forward game. Fun skills, Different heroes have varying playstyles.

Unfortunately, even with the communities extensive efforts and file fixes, this game still crashes me into blue screens at certain points making it unplayable for me. The Barrow-downs is the first place when general bluescreens begin and later on chapter 8, The Sewers crash to BDOS. In a "good" run the game just closes. One of the fixes is to change a bunch of general video options to minimum and use iron sights on a character and stare at the ground in order to get past the sewers.

This is not "a fix" just a way to dredge through an area.

As of making this review, I have 36.9 hours in the game and have enjoyed everything not involving the blue screen errors and general crashes. So, this is a regretful "not reccommended".

I have restarted the game 2 times in order to enjoy most of it as much as I could again. I do feel like I've got my enjoyment from the game unfortunately, I simply cannot finish it at all. The crashes are too prevelant by the end of the game and I simply can't find a fix that works for me.

I must say I got this game for £4.99 on the steam sale and I was not expecting it to be very good! I was proven wrong it's highly addictive once you get going, I never get tired of killing orcs and trolls and it's even better when you slice off their heads arms or legs and it splatters black orc blood all over your armour! better still is the slowed down action as you deal the killing blow to an enemy reminding me very much of the film 300. The village of Bree looks great as does all the places you visit. I would of preferred the actual actors voices from LOTR but you soon forget about that as the game itself is well thought out and is interwoven with the quest of the "one ring", even though it is a quest which is entirely seperate from that. I hope they make another game set in middle earth because I really like it as would any LOTR fan I rate this game at 9/10

This game is not going to break new ground in innovation but what it does do is deliver a good solid game that has well thought out online play, a good three player co-op mode.

Spent hours upon hours of my life playing this outside of Steam when I was younger.

I beat the game several times on each difficulty, and then started all over again.

Awesome game with a very complementing atmosphere, crisp visuals, three great protagonists, and gruesome combat.

Unfortunately, LOTR: WITN is rather linear and only has an illusion of being 'open world'.

Still I HIGHLY recommend it, and for the sales price of $4.99, it's definitely worth it.

Updated since completion!

If you've got a buddy that you want to play this with, and you're both able to drop the $5 while it's on sale, DO IT. I think playing solo isn't terribly fun, but playing with a friend is awesome. The game itself is pretty average, but we're having a blast having it as a cooperative game. It feels a lot like a throwback to some of the PS2 LOTR games that you could play coop, but brought to more modern graphics and other standards.

You can see this game is 5 years old, but for the price of $5 on sale, it's great. I may not drop the current regular price of $20 on it, but for the sale price, awesome buy.

The story is surprisingly interesting - I wouldn't say it's terribly deep, but I didn't expect it to be nearly as good as it was. You run into a lot of characters from the film and even some characters from the books, as well as many new characters that we've never met. I was expecting everyone in this game to be kind of dull and boring, but the game is more rich than that, thankfully.

The gameplay is a little repetitive, but if you're someone that likes hack and slash games with some skills on the side, you'll enjoy this. I definitely did.

Tldr: Buy with a buddy, solo will probably be too boring. Surprisingly deep and fun world.

Definitely a worthwhile play. If you're an RPGer that likes a little co-op play then this is perfect. THe storyline keeps you wanting to know more while the combat and gear machanics are interesting enough to warrant a little exploration. A little short for my tastes, but I'm also an old fashioned RPGer so I typically expect 70+ hours out of my games. I'd say you can finish this entire storyline in about 5 hours.

11 hours of coop playing. No other bugs but few spiders. If you wish to do something for your party dont pick dwarf.
FIX if you pick dwarf and take skill points to crossbow attacks he will become OP and take away all the challenge from the game

This game is surprisingly fun, even for someone who is not into the LOTR franchise like me.

This game is designed for 3 players, but can easily be played with 2 players aswell. If you are 2 players, I recommend nobody picking the dwarf, since he is too overpowered and you will just be brainlessly stomping through the game with him.

However, the game has a few technical flaws. For example, the built-in voice chat is not mutable, and when restarting the game some of your preferences get lost (like the game's audio settings or the arrangement of the items in your inventory). I've seen quite a few other reviews mention alot of crashes and bluescreens, I never experienced such an occurence though.

If you can live with a few technical downsides like these, you can have a few great hours with this game. As reference, it took me about 25 hours to complete the game 3 times (once on each difficulty).

my friend and I beat this game a few times all the way up to legendary and stopped. Its a good game. AMD cards will have issues. I couldnt get it to run without work on windows 10 but it's been a while. COOP is where it wins. If you have trouble with the game taking the mic oh well deal with it. It was a port and works pretty well all things considered, thats one of the few major problems. Would have loved to see them make more games like this. (without the mic always on)

This game exceeded my expectations. Me and my roommate bought it for 5 euros and it has been a lot of fun so far. We like to play LotR soundtrack while playing it stoned :D Recommended.

Good story well told. Captures LOTR well enough. Field of view was a little limited.

Me and my friend bought the game and started co-op a couple of days ago.
There weren't any problems, we have played it around 3 hours, it was really good fun.

Then, the next day, my friend tried to launch the game, BUT HE COULDN'T.
Because he has Win8 on his pc and this causes several different problems, according to the forums, etc.

I have some questions in my mind now.

First, if this game isn't compatible with Win8, how come we played the game for 3 hours without any problems?

Second, we always try to buy the original copies of the games on Steam instead of cracked ones from the Internet, and still we have ♥♥♥♥♥♥ technical issues with the games. Can't you just prepare a single update for all these problems?

It seems, no.

I recommend this game if you run an Nvidia card. It was never designed with AMD cards in mind and it shows. Frequent CTDs and driver crashes, even after turning all the effects and detail off. Game may not work if you run Windows 10 without verifying cache and re-downloading the runtime stuff again.

The good

Faithful to the Lord of the Rings lore
Detailed models and animations
Sense of achievement killing bosses
Boss fights are challenging
Background graphics are pretty good
Good music
Can be great fun at times

The bad
Ported console game - poor PC optimisation
Has major issues with Windows 10
Frequent crashes with AMD cards - Nvidia only title
Console-itis no quicksave
Some of the dialogue is straight out of drama school
Game is largely on rails, can't go anywhere freely
Combat can get old
Challenging fights may throw off some people
No role-playing to be had, game is 90% hack and slash

War in the North is an action RPG game with a strong focus on co-op. As three warriors placed in a new story set concurrently against the events in the LOTR trilogy. War in the North adds in a brand new plot. All of the familiar trappings like shops and loot to blacksmiths that repair weakened or busted weaponry. As well as some combo based sword (and axe) play.
