A Sky Full of Stars Asta Konno Interview (Part 1)

Hi All!

We hope that you are enjoying A Sky Full of Stars!
With the game being out for a month now, we are keen to share some behind the scenes information with you from the creators themselves.

Today we will be posting the first half of Asta Konno's interview who was in charge of Planning and the Main Scenario. He wrote Hikari, Saya and the Common Routes.

★ How did you start planning this project?

The director, Yow, was the first to bring up the idea of doing a story centered around stargazing, and in the beginning I said we shouldn’t because it seemed a bit lame. However, it was a topic I was interested in incorporating into a story, and since Yow wanted to do it, I gave it a shot and that became the story we have today.

★ Is there anything you changed from “If My Heart Had Wings” (herein IMHHW)?

When we started planning we decided to put more emphasis on the characters. IMHHW was a story that was built in a straight line. We thought that an overly complicated melodramatic approach to character relationships didn’t suit it, and focused on making a more straightforward story. For “A Sky Full of Stars” (herein ASFS), we went out of our way to make it as difficult as possible. We thought it would be interesting to put together a scenario that made the characters have to really work to find the answers they sought.
What we wanted to retain was the atmosphere suiting the young characters, as well as the romance and excitement focused on the sky like we had in IMHHW. We wanted their values to be displayed not just by losses and gains.

★ What did you try to keep in mind when writing the scenario?

I enjoyed the parts that came from Hikari, Saya, and Akito being childhood friends. The part where Comet Girl gets asked at what age it becomes weird to be a virgin, or Saya’s role as a commuter wife, there were a lot of moments that only worked because they were childhood friends. The scene where they went to the hot springs together, I kept laughing to myself as I wrote it because they were so silly. In IMHHW, we had Ageha in the role of the childhood friend, but that wasn’t part of the same story. The little things that were part of the setting but didn’t feel like they were used to their full potential in that story contributed a lot to ASFS I feel.

★ What were you careful about when writing the common route?

How much time to spend on flashbacks. There was some negative feedback from users about it when we released the trial version. Putting too much emphasis on the flashbacks takes away from what’s happening in the present. However, part of the story dealt with how the past affected the present, so I made sure to put a lot of effort into showing that.
Also, with the way the story turned out, Hikari doesn’t appear for a while, which meant that in the beginning Saya had to carry much of the story by herself. I didn’t think that would lead to us putting so much emphasis on her commuter wife status, though. (laughs)

★ Akito Sorami

"The Astronomer Who Never Looks at the Stars."

Height: 176cm

A member of the astronomy club, but unwilling to look at the sky. For that reason he's called the astronomer who never looks at the stars.
The only reason why he joined the club was so he could use the club room as a place to sleep. He's currently the only member.

When he was a child, he first became interested in the stars when he and Hikari looked at the moon through the telescope his father had bought him.
Not long after, Saya joined them to form a trio travelling the world of the stars.
However, that all came to an end when Hikari's family moved away.
After Hikari was gone, he and Saya also grew distant, and Akito decided he would no longer look at the stars.

Some years later, Akito met Saya again at school, and they became like old friends again.
While working part-time at the convenience store owned by his former teacher's family, he spends his days mountain climbing.
There's nothing he loves more than a cup of instant coffee while watching the sun rise from atop a mountain.

"I felt like I could reach the stars."

About This Game

After a bicycle accident shatters his dreams of becoming a racer, Aoi Minase returns to his hometown, depressed and defeated. With seemingly no hope left for the future and no idea what to do with himself from here on, Aoi meets Kotori Habane―a young girl stuck in a wheelchair with a flat tire. It is on that windmill-dotted hill that Aoi's somber yet touching story of youth, friendship, and flight begins.

Upon witnessing a glider soar overhead, Aoi sets off on a journey to realize the dream everyone has as a child: the dream of flight.

Working together with Aoi’s childhood friend, Ageha Himegi, the main characters of this visual novel begin rebuilding the Soaring Club, which is on the brink of disbandment at the hands of an uncaring school board. These beginners take hold of their passion, overcoming failures, obstacles, and interference from the school to put everything they have into building their own working glider.

Their ultimate goal to fly through the legendary "Morning Glory"―a rare and stunning weather phenomenon producing a special type of roll-shaped cloud that appears in the morning when the conditions are just right.

Join Aoi on this journey as he learns about the sky, his new friends, and much more.
