About This Game

The War 1918 is a WW1 modification for Company of Heroes, focusing on the last year of the First World War. Experience the great operations of the last year of the Great War as Germany breaks through the Western Front in the Spring Offensive; as the Entente, liberate France and Belgium in the Hundred Days offensive. This mod is - for the lack of a better word - outstanding! You can choose (as of this review) between two factions: The Deustch Kaiserreich (The Empire of Germany) and the United Kingdom/Entente. Both sides have their perks and downgrades: Britain has strength in its Armor and tanks, while Germany is more effective in gassing their enemies into the ground (It's fun, I swear) and for those of you more interested in or are more of an infantry commander in WWII strategy games, then this is your mod. Of course, as long as you don't mind or even better, know how to counter several enemy artillery strikes. However, this mod, in terms of faction flavor, is was previously stated, 2 factions. There has been the promise of a French Army and an Austro-Hungarian army, but I am unsure whether the mod is dead or not. Last I checked, the image was foggy. But overall, if you have time to kill before history class, play this mod!

Mod is easily in between a 9/10 - 10/10

It's pretty well-made as far as WW1-related mods go. It's a good 'what-if' to consider if the Germans managed to build more A7Vs, although it would've been nice if the prototypes that they were planning to deploy were included. Here's hoping the devs manage to push through with the Frenchies in the near future.

So I've played the Mod for a short while but I can already see some pretty big errors and flaws, and reflecting on those I can't really recommend this mod for the game.

The major issue is that WW1 fans, are sorely deprived of any decent kind of historically accurate we've lowered our standards to accept essentially gaming ♥♥♥♥. Call of "Verun" - corpse dragging simulator hardly helped most of the period fans, and aimed it's goals at CoD players. The New Battlefield will also hardly surprisingly be another "who can click faster game". But this Mod, isn't making much "progress" into the WW1 genre at all.

First off it's been abandoned by it's devs. Some many months ago some promise of a French and Austrian army was made- some artwork is there on the main screen but otherwise that's it. Wouldn't get your hopes up.

The mechanics itself are flawed. Company of heroes is a WW2 tank spamming game, and for some reason someone thought that porting it into a WW1 setting was going to change the AI's fundementals. Wrong. Any matches against the AI will just end in tank spamming. They are the only thing that will break the deadlock, which while historically true, does not mean that in history 50000000 mark IV's were needed to get anywhere. The Germans will also spam tanks, despite their hesitance to use them at all in WW1.

Infantry comprise of raiders, riflemen, or engineers. You stick an officer with them and that's pretty much it. Snipers are great early game. But the moment the enemy gets artillery or mortars/minenwerfers they become obsolete, despite being a driving factor behind the deadlock of WW1.

Trenches and their mechanics are god ♥♥♥♥ing awful. Troops will simply refuse to get in them. Being in them seems to negate ♥♥♥♥ all damage, building them for some reason costs fuel despite the fact that they are quite literally holes in the ground, so it actually discourages you to build them when you could use that fuel for tanks.

The AI will fight like Company of Heroes and run around the map not building defences apart from artillery, company HQ strong points and MG nests, so basically the mod looks like WW1 but plays like WW2.

Units will be heard to use lines from Company of Heroes. Last I checked, "Watch out MG42's" and "Pick up the Bren Gun" don't really fit in with WW1 setting.

Machine gun teams are depressingly fragile. Artillery are fun but realtively useless.

Tanks are OP, which while true, means that 20 German tanks on one map does get rather hard to beat. Especially considering as your only anti tank options are infantry anti tank grenades which does nothing, artillery, which is hard to pinpoint, raider bangalores, which to be fair are one of the only effective things, or your own tanks.

WHICH is totally NOT the point of WW1. It was hitler who envisioned tank-on-tank combat. Not the Kaiser.

The mod itself is free, which is fair enough, as I say, WW1 fans can't be picky, and if played in mutliplayer can be quite fun if you use the unspoken rule of not tank-spamming.

There are only 4-5 maps to choose from I believe? Otherwise I think you can play on WW2 maps but again, not saying a great deal for the Mod's cosntruction if that's all that's availible.

The scores and menus from the main menu seem to be fed by your Company of Heroes original scores which is pretty cool, if you were, say, playing WW2. But obviously that's not why I downloaded the Mod.

Commander options in the game are fairly cool, to the creators credit, but again really too few for the fact a match can drag on for 2-3 hours if you're not careful (Big offensive/ annihilation)

All in all. It's free. 4/10 for trying, but it's obsolete. With the release of Coh2 the mechanics of the game are clearly not converted enough to make you feel like you're in a WW1 environment. It's abandonment is hardly surprising, but the community needs to stop settling for less and help to force developers to release something that will do WW1 Justice, and not another "pew pew the only aspect is shooting and killing" games like Verdun or the soon to be released battlefield 1.

It's worth noting the game sometimes needs to be started twice to actually start.

I tested the game. Really good mod, high production standards, good looking, plays well. Its larger in some ways of scale than the original - a good base for a WWI setting
Awesome job

what can i say about this mod turned free expansion??? ITS AMAZING. this mod incoporates everything ww1. including shell shock, gas warfare and effects, trench warfare, and so on. expect battlefield to be sodden and muddy by the end of a match. great for multiplayer and single player! also dont expect to use normal COH tactics here. charging an enemy base in no longer an option, as it means almost certain death from getting mown down by trench riflemen and machine guns.

yes! you will find yourself having to resort to WW1 tactics to actually make ground, such as shelling enemy positions with your howitzers and mortars before sending your men over the top to make ground.

the games will be long, craters will be everywhere and trenches will mark the position of a hard fought battle for only small amounts of ground.

what are you waiting for? jump over the top of standard COH and enter the age of barbed wire trenches and shell shock!

Broke my base game, GG 9/11

Other than it breaking my CoH and resulting in it not being able to play Blitzkrieg it is a very well made mod.
Trench warfare is a serious thing and TGW1918 emulates it well. Tanks come late game and if you don't have the resources to counter them with AT guns and your own tanks then you are screwed.

Don't give your troops body armor.
Give them all AT rifles and MG's.
Don't bother with Stormtroopers.
Give Engineers Demolitions.
Amass an assault force of at least 6 rifle squads and an officer to boost morale on the assault. (PIPER OPTIONAL)
Take what you can then dig in because the enemy will come at you hard with early rushes and raiding party pokes.

Brilliant mod which feels like a completely different game to Company of heroes. The trench based defense and historical unit options mean that tactics must revolve around breaking strong trenches and fortifications with artillary bombardment and tank attacks. I often found the game degenerates into a bitter struggle between two trenchlines across a no-mans-land, exciting and tense in a different way to the blitzkrieg of the base-game. AI works relatively well considering, but teams could use some re-balancing in my opinion. But hey, free mod, who could complain?
