New beta with full Linux support!

Hi all,
the new Ren'Py (the tool I use to make all my games) is still in beta but stable enough for me to upload a beta version of this game, if anyone using Linux could confirm that the achievement works would be great.

If they work on this game I can update all the other games (including Loren The Amazon Princess for example).

To play the beta, right click on the game in library, then properties and finally the "BETAS" tab. You can pick from the drop-down menu the "beta" branch and then the game will update itself and you can try the new version.

A Love Story, going interactive...

Visual Novels, not to be confused with Interactive Novels, are kind of a no go genre for me. Still I do have some of them on my account. And I am always disgusted about how careless and without any compassion those stories are often told. Heileen is no excetption to this. Sure it's nice to play, somehow cute... But... Well... It's missing a lot of the stuff which a novell should have, namely a story that holds enough suspense to bind it's reader to the screen.

Since Heileen one is only a Prelude to the other parts, which seem to be more elaborate I'll try to be a bit more positive about this game and even though I dislike the genre will try to give it some credentials by dividing pros and cons:

- Pro
Cute characters, some of them are quite believable while others might have jumped out of some childhood books.
Well done Graphics, not the best in the world but they are like the standard in Visual Novells.
Decent soundtrack, I had games with far worse sound.

- Cons
Limited Replayability, the game get's boring very fast even during the first run.
Strange storyline, this is some kind of romancing game, ok, but why do I feel like in a cheap version of a romance, where everyone is easy?
No challenge, the game has no difficulty to mention, you play it and either you get one solution or the other but you aren't really challenged.
COYA mindset of the developer, you feel the whole time like you are on the rails of somebody else...

Conditional Recomendation:

This game might be for you if you are new to the genre to try it out. It has no challenges to tell about and you can get your achivements like some free candy. Being a completionist, this game might give you an easy satisfaction. Even if you read the whole story, it's played through in less than one hour. The graphics and soundtrack are standard of the time the game was created, the story is somewhat substandard... more like an devolved fairytale, which might also be a fine thing for youth to adolescent players. The game is full of hinted innuendo, which might frustrate more direct players who like to evolve their fantasies about the main characters...

So it is a recomendation, but only slightly so - if you are not a fan of the genre visual novell, or romance games, dating sims etc... don't even dare to touch it - you might as well be frustrated like hell because of the game.

Heileen episode 1 is not a too bad of an Novel, the drawing/animating is clunky and there are barely backgroundsounds that is, but the dialogue story is actually quite interesting and makes you wish to play the other 2 games (which are said to be way better than the 1st one)

You play Heileen, she lives with her uncle as her parents die, she gets forced to sail to america with him, she doesnt want to at first, her vegetarian childhoodfriend comes with her, theres a sailor shes interested in, she doesn't like her uncles matresse, but can get a somewhat love relationship with her.
Basically thats it. All things happen on the travel route to America.

- Not only hetero "love" relationships (Women x Women 2, Male x Woman 1, although they are not realy that of romantic)
- Many choices
- quite nice backgrounds
- 3 Routes that alter the ending a bit
- "Quest" system, whichis kinda nice i gues
- Tradingcards
- Achievements
- Playtime/€ (~1h per route = 3hours)

- barely any backgroundmusic (mostly only in the beginning of a new chapter, not repeating over the game)
- Realy cluncky character design, they do not look 100% ugly, but are not pretty either
- Most choices dont do anything
- Not realy 100% all ages, as there are sexual jokes (smaller kids might not notice though) as well as barely dresses scenes (with this cluncy style not too bad) and some torn clothes ones in the end. Might be okay for 12/13/14+ or so, parents have to think it themselves.

All in all i can say: Not the worst i have read and i will try the other 2 titles later on when i have the time (owning them anyway already)

~ 6.5/10

An early Winter Wolves visual novel with 3 romance options (2 female + 1 male), an ok story with some mystery thrown in and decent characters (however this may be acquired taste, as always - personally, I'm not fond of John, who appears to be "default" game romance). There is no trace of hentai there, although there are some mildly suggestive scenes that may not be appropriate for younger audience.

The main flaw is game length - I managed to complete all 3 patches in just below 2 hours. It's really short, but on a positive side - even little choices matter, and many answers lead to different branches (and sometimes unlocking or solving a quest).

There are no RPG elements, no stats building or daily routine planning, just going through the scenes and making choices - so what you get here is a steamlined experience - without tedious grinding element - which also may be seen as a plus.

All in all, "Heileen 1: Sail Away" is an enjoyable little visual novel, which serves as an introduction to bigger (and generally better received) follow-ups. While "Sail Away" alone may be not worth it's price point, if you can get it cheap and you plan to play through the whole series, it's an easy recommendation.

Easy 100%, hilariously racist undertones and cheesy dialogue, but it's been bundled or put on sale a million times.

It's not a waste of the time you'll spend playing it, but wait for a steep discount or another bundle.

A heartwarming tale of a barely legal settler girl discovering the sleeping lesbian within herself.
