What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Robocraft has been built with a dedicated community of Robocrafters from the very beginning. It's first release was in April 2013 and had no multiplayer and no combat. From that point and to now the game has grown to it's full MMO state and whilst we still call it a 'Live Alpha' you will find it a very polished and fully featured experience.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect the game to remain in Early Access for at least the next 6 months after it's initial release on Steam. This way the Steam community can help to shape the game as the rest of the Robocraft community has so far.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“When Clan Battles, Tournaments, Megabots (players as bosses in Boss Battles vs. other users), plus integration of Steam Leaderboards and Steam Achievements.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We call it 'Early Alpha' but we expect you to find it as polished and fully featured as most 'Beta' releases.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No, Robocraft will always be Free-to-play and our prices won't change as a result of shifting from Early Access to a full release in future.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Freejam (the developer of Robocraft) has community in it's blood. The work Freejam is a combination of 'Free' and 'Jam' where 'Free' shows our dedication to keeping Robocraft always Free and 'Jam' stands for 'Jamming'. We like to think of Robocraft as a game that has been built from the ground up with the community and 'Jamming' with the community is ingrained in everything we do.”

Early Access Review
I've decided to heavily modify this review and turn it into a proper review instead of a complaint based on one huge update.

At one time, I would have highly recommended this. To the point where I was willing to throw a little money to Freejam. However recent developer actions, have effectively destroyed the game completely into a general unplayable mess. This stems from a very long term player who has seen many positive updates, and indeed negative updates.

Recently, 3 things were tacked on to make Robocraft "Competitive".
  • hard cpu caps
  • removing overtiering
  • minimum armor tiers
I use quotes because that is an extremely ugly word for a game like this. Robocraft is a casual, at one time, friendly game where you build at your own pace. Enjoy each tier, have fun with different builds, unlock a few things.

But now, creativity is effectively dead. Gone, no more, deadawoo. What happened? Markified is what happened. This is a real quote taken from his twitter.

""I know the no OT and CPU caps etc will hurt artistic creativity in Battle Mode, but our priority is a fair competitive team game first...""

So whats the big deal? Robocraft is longer about building awesome drivable unique robots, it’s about building gunbeds, helibombers. Thats it. That’s what robocraft has come to with this recent, game breaking update. You won't see insane artbots that often take skill to get kills. You will see cookie cutter, generic, 1 colored robots.

Another thing Mark has said (This is not a direct quote)

"The real game starts at Tier 10"

It hurts to say that out loud because of how stupid that is. You would of had your fun all the way from tier 1, to tier 10. The whole robocraft experience was the fun, not the very last tier which you grind over and over again to make other robots.

Another thing is the current status of freejam. They are an extremely small indie company that just happened to of hit the nail on the head with (Former) creativity and fun. Their game became too popular for their own good and now they're unable to handle the sheer volume of user requests for servers(Technically not servers since the last few updates have brought the player base to a half of its former self so servers are pretty empty, bug fixes, anything. Robocraft is an early access game, there will be huge bugs that last months. But with this short staff, it will last even longer.

Lastly: The community has shown with this recent update that LoL's famous toxicity can easily be outdone. People are legitimately ♥♥♥♥♥♥ about this update (As they should be). While some may of reflected upon this with a lot of asterisks in the air and all caps always on, many have legitimately expressed concern and wanted the update to be rolled back. How are the people defending this update's response? "LOL CRY MORE BABIES NOW U HAV 2 GET GOOD". Quote, unquote. This is running rampart to the point where forums are having flame between the now split community. Update rollback, or Update stays. That’s how bad its become. Hey man, wanna like express your valid feedback about how you strongly dislike this update? "NO OMFG STOP WHINING GOD UR AL JUST LIL KIDS WHO THANK UR SELF ENTILED". This is what you must prepare yourself for.

Just a fun little tidbit.
  • Pre-Meta - Oh god this game is amazing. IS THAT OPTIMUS PRIME FIREING LASERS?
  • Meta - uh, no. This doesn't feel like what robocraft once was. Is robocraft having an identify issue here?
  • "TeamPing" Update - Oh dear god, its true identify has been revealed. Its a generic badly worked moba that wants LoL players and gameplay elements without trying. Abort abort abort.
And now here I am. Disgusted by 1 person's choices, a community full of people screaming at each other, and 60 days of premium time that won't be used anymore.

Review of the current problems:
  • No more creativity (Art is now confined to a place that isn't even in game yet)
  • Developer apparently hates the community's feedback
  • Extremely toxic community. (On par with LoL)]
  • To enjoy the game, please choose between the following builds: gunbed with treads, helibomber, bomber
  • Extremely small indie company that became too successful for their own good. Unable to maintain server health, bug fixing.
  • Bugs will last months and months. Will they get fixed? No one knows

Welcome to the robocraft community. Your opinion is worthless as you ride Mark's wild ride into a empty game.

Early Access Review
WAS the Awesomenes Construction Simulator 2014. That is what this game WAS. Note that I'm a Tier 9 and have just recently played this game to update my review.

I have Built:
M-35 Mako from Mass Effect 1
M-44 Hammerhead from Mass Effect 2.
UT-47A Kodiak from Mass Effect 3.
Terran Diamondback from Starcraft 2.
Terran Ar♥♥♥♥e Mercenary Siege Tank. (YES. THE SIEGE BREAKER FROM WINGS OF LIBERTY.)

But none of that matters when the base physics of the game have been modified from what was established, the weapons continuously nerfed until being 6 feet under, Rewards being lowered with "Improvments to the system", and a plethora of other problems.

Back in early 2014 I STRONGLY, I repeat, STRONGLY supported this game. STRONGLY, I emphasize this, say it with me. STRONGLY... SUPPORTED THIS GAME. But with every step forward, FreeJam has shown they intend to take two steps back every time.

- "Clone Wars"
So let's first start off with the removal of all the nice cool gadgets that were originally available right at the start. This included the Hoverblades, Plasma launchers, Railguns, and thrusters. From level 1 upward of Level 3. Yes, this happened. Freejam didn't change THIS until 7 months later, when people stopped crying and moaning for it to come back.

- "Double Edged Butt-♥♥♥♥ery"
Now PRIOR to this, they also made some modifications to the reward system, adding a "Repair function" to the game, which put a drain on casual players Tiers 6 and up back then. What was the kick in the balls here? a 25% decrease in rewards. Yes, BOTH RP and TP (Robopoints and Techpoints).

- "Hero Zero"
Next up was the "Hero System", which allowed you to get the full RP and TP from a match you died in if your team won, but WAIT! ...At the cost of the entire reward system getting another 25% decrease. At this point, managing to make enough money to get new parts was an uphill battle, and at a 50% reward decrease that has remained permanent to this day, It's been a massive pain in the ♥♥♥.

- "Turn up for Hate"
Now, next up, THEY REMOVE repair cost, yet YET again, ANOTHER FREAKING REWARD QUANTITY DECREASE. You getting the pattern yet? Don't worry I'll explain it in a second. At this point, it got rediculous, but oh no, there's even MORE.

- "From Intense to Indense"
This game was always a One-life team Death Match game. The "Respawned and Overclocked" update has killed everything that made it original and turned it into a confused MOBA wannabe. Even worse, is that they've now set the original mode, now named "Classic" So far on the back burner it can take from 5 minutes to 3 hours just to get on a match, gradually decreasing the time needed to even get into one with each tier you go up. But here's the final blow to the old mode: A 80% decrease at this point... To the profit you make from it. "Classic" is now as worthwhile as dumping your ♥♥♥ in a toilet...Or on a development team. Think that's the worst part? Oh no. I'm not even FINISHED.

The controls with any movement design other than Tank treads will feel so obliterated you will literally ask... Yeah that's right, the subtitle of this paragraph. As of the R&O Update, Wheels are incredibly sluggish, Rockets provide minimal momentum, hoverblades are highly unstable if you lose even ONE, Aerofoils are a disaster to use, Walker legs are bloody hell to even keep still on a ceiling or a steep hill if you want to stay in place, and believe me, it's going to walk down to the surface on you while you shoot. And LASTLY, the rotor blade design is sluggish as well.

Why all the reward debuffs? Because they want money. They want to FORCE THE PLAYERBASE to purchase premium currency so that they can accelerate their growth to a level they can remotely tolerate. This game never DID have a fair free to play model, but it is now skewed beyond any conceivable belief. And also, No, it's not even classified as Pay to Win. IT'S PAY TO ♥♥♥♥ING PROGRESS.

The introduction of Easy Anti Cheat, or EAC. Instead of using Steam's VAC system which worked very well and still mostly does, made no sense either. They decided to use a third party system, that not only people have always second-guessed, but never trusted, and never been comfortable with. You see where this is going? Yeah. They drove off a number of their player base stating, "If you can't get into Robocraft to play because of EAC, that is a small price to pay for the issue of Hackers trying to ruin our game". The only people who tried to help fix this was EAC themselves as I recall, and even THEN, only under the pressure of the Robocraft community, which had already started leaving.

WHY did EAC have to fix it? Because Freejam was too dumbfounded watching the stars shine out of their fat frigging assh0les to do it themselves, aside from the matter of the development company's profoundly horrendous inexperience in stopping hackers in the first place. But it doesn't even end there. They won't respond to crticism kindly, light or dark, which is why i'm not sugarcoating this. Not even an ounce. They won't listen to reason, no matter how kindly you put it. If they don't like your ♥♥♥, you better be prepared for the ban hammer, because they silence ANY AND ALL FEEDBACK that involves any kind of actual review with a VENGEANCE. And hell, this hasn't even ended yet. Keep reading. This is starting to look like the Robocraft Holocaust. *shudder*

- "Nerf 'em to the Grave"
Now, the FINAL kick to the balls here, and you might not get up from this one, is the repeated nerfing of weapons that have performed perfectly fine, and the buffing of weapons that never even needed a buff. FINALLY, there's the issue of rendering certain vehicular designs completely obsolete, promoting the uncreative design of Gun Bricks with tank treads, and tank treads only. I'll give an example.

- "From Speedy to Needy"
I made a vehicle called "The Masterkill B@stard" (Frankly can't put the word itself in) Which operated on two things: Wheels + downforce, and rocket asssisted forward momentum. As of 3 days after the R&O update, my speedy little vehicle is no faster than a Treaded Tank, and that's WITH the thrusters on. I guess people can't stand having to exercize their arms, hands and fingers with the corsshairs on their Railguns and enjoy the game, because this actually happened. WITHOUT rockets, it's even SLOWER than a tank. Believe me, i've tested this one the day I learned of the horror inflicted on the Physics engine, which I think it's safe to say, it's nearly nonexistant now.

- "Final Thoughts"
Lastly, like i said, I STRONGLY... STRONGLY! SUPPORTED THIS GAME! Hell, I even put $10 into this game just for hangar bays! But as of now? FreeJam has botched their game so much, yielded to the manipulation of their own community so badly, that it is nigh-unenjoyable. This game had SO MUCH POTENTIAL a year ago. But now it's all been dried up. Freejam has made it evidently clear they don't want to take a step in the right direction. A year ago, i'd give this game a 9.5 out of 10. But as of now, I can only - in good conscience - give it a 4 out of 10. A toxic community, confused development team, nonsensical gameplay, poor teamplay or constant nerfs as a double-edge to updates, and absolutely horrible physics engine tortured to death by modification of what it once was, ALL IN THE NAME, of staying away from making the game overall better simple for personal profit, keeps me from daring touch this awful nightmare any more after this. Stay. Away. From this hideous deformed child of a game. You will be stricken with it's Gods-awful MOBA wannabe gameplay.

Was one of the best games I've ever played but the development team has lost all semblance of touch with it's playerbase.

While it once offered challenging and interesting gameplay and construction it now has been modified to remove any skill or tactics from the combat and construction. Where people once spent countless hours fine tuning creative vehicles now the most effective bot is a brick with several guns attached on treads. Additionally they have enstilled extreme limitations on all tiers making gameplay homogeneous and boring at all levels.

At the begining of the year I couldn't have said enough good about this game but now all I can say is don't waste your time. Look up Steamcraft if you want something more to the tune of what this game used to be about (be warned though the whole game is set up in russian so there is a bit of a learning curve).

Okay, I apologize for the upcoming wall of text but, I feel like this needs to be said.

Let me tell you a story. You see, there was once a time where this game was one of the best Free to Play Indie Games you'll ever get.... anywhere, really.
I started playing this more than a year ago because, well, I liked the game's general concept.
Build a fighting machine and fight others with it in a crazy capture-the-base type game.

And the battles, the battles.... they happen on either Mars or a fictional ice planet from one of the Gliese star systems.
You can choose to be a tank, a jet, a helicopter, a mecha, a walker, a high performance hypercar....
Dude, you name it.

Sure there were once a few setbacks like say, repair costs and all that crazy BS but, the devs (before they f***ing lost it) decided to eventually remove that and heck, even added new things like Tesla Blades, Nano-Disruptors, Rotor Blades and other cool ****.

However, with this good stuff came something rather... awful, so to speak.
A rather toxic and divided playerbase. Something that, unknown to some (including myself, unfortunately), would cause this game's eventual downfall (as of writing this review).

See, Freejam (the devs) decided to do a massive game changer:

Create a new game mode that involved destroying the enemy team's base and capturing a bunch of towers (sort of like a MOBA, so to speak).
Personally, I really didn't mind the update at first, I mean, the original game mode was getting old pretty fast and, I always wanted something far more strategic... unfortunately, that is when things started going to s***.

The update finally came around and all of a sudden, unoriginal, uninspired, easy-to-build "bricks" reigned supreme.
Tanks or helicopters shaped like either bricks or a bunch of bricks slapped together (the creator of Lego is rolling in his grave right now), armed with SMGs, Plasma Cannons or Nano Disruptors (aka Medic Guns).
There was almost no way of stopping them without either dying or losing half of your entire 'bot. Thankfully, with that one update
(called the “Meta” update by the devs), you can still respawn and, heck, the devs even decided to listen and fix some the bugs plaguing said update.

It wasn't really enough, but it was definitely better than nothing.
Little did we know, however, that it was unfortunately, all downhill from there.

As time went on, Freejam seemed to be more catering to those aforementioned brick builders.
Fixed Winged aircraft became close to obsolete, walkers and even other vehicles, whether built creatively or practically went down like flies.... it was awful.

Fortunately, most of us still had the opportunity to build the way we want, only limited by our robots' ranks and our CPU levels which, while limiting, wasn't that bad. Little did we know however, that things were, yet again, about to get worse. Far worse that what we could ever imagined.

Some elitist scrubs, a VERY vocal minority, decided to complain on and on.
They called some of us overpowered, overtiered (ignoring the fact that most people, e.g. the ones who built actual bots and not tiny scrubmobiles with one over tiered gun, were building along the tier limit), seal clubbers, etc.

They kept telling Freejam to nerf EVERYTHING they find "overpowered". And they did.

In the span of a month, they limited weapon and armor tiers, they limited how much CPU you can have per tier, effectively limiting majority of the playerbase's ability to build actual good bots.

As of today's recent update, bricks, scrub bots (THE VERY THING THEY WERE TRYING TO NERF), literal glass cannons (bots made out of glass), and 'bots dubbed as "Markbots", tiny bots made with 5-10 armor cubes, glass, one powerful gun of each tier now reign supreme. Maps and multiplayer are broken, there's bugs wherever the eye can see (and probably beyond as well), the creativity, the fun, the "soul" this game once had, so to speak...

It's gone. All gone. And the elitists celebrate and gloat over their victory while most of us suffer for the actions of a few random scrubs who can't build worth s*** back before the Meta update even came around. Freejam has killed their own good game.

TL/DR: Until Freejam decides to get their s*** together and stop catering to certain elitist scrubs, avoid this game at all costs. It's just a hollow shell of the greatness it used to be.

EDIT: Decided to fix this review a bit so it won't be a straight up wall of text (and therefore, easier to read.... hopefully). Oh and grammatical errors have been fixed too. You're all welcome.

Still, my opinion stands. Until Freejam gets their s*** together, avoid this game at all costs. It's not worth it. Maybe I'll play this again in the future (again, and apologizing for being a repetitive **** here, when Freejam decides to fix their s*** and get their s*** together), but until then, again, avoid at all costs.

This message goes to the Developer:
Your game made fun,
in lower tiers
and in the early times.
But now every game i play is flooded
with camping railguns
and bombers...

SMGs are ok, they deal and recieve damage,
and theres no working way to camp.

The healer [The one i play] is the only one wich can play,
without making people sad or angry
but if you play as a medic, you need to play a lot
to get your rp or tp.

Practice - you can test your robot, and please do this,
its bad if you half team dosent work.

Classic - its the fight, you die, youre dead,
hope you have a medic in your team.

Challenge - 4 strong robots v.s. a full team
its ballanced, campers die fast(er), counts for both.

Battle - you respawn, every player is needed.
many player just vorget something and leave,
many player "ragequitt" and the rest wich stays
got one problem more... this battle mode is the best,
for camping people, you have a shield(the fusion shield of your spawn)
this shield goes only down, if you loose all four towers.

so, all in one, i can say the game was good, now it broke,
and i hope it will be fixed again.
