What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Robocraft has been built with a dedicated community of Robocrafters from the very beginning. It's first release was in April 2013 and had no multiplayer and no combat. From that point and to now the game has grown to it's full MMO state and whilst we still call it a 'Live Alpha' you will find it a very polished and fully featured experience.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Freejam are now plotting a path to Full Release with an aim to be fully release by early 2016.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Whilst users accounts will never be reset - so what you earn in game now you will always keep - the Full Release of Robocraft will contain a number of additional key core features, specifically Clans (inc. Clan Battles), Rank (inc. Ranked Battles), more game modes, Coloring your Robot, a PVE mode and translation into many languages.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We call it 'Early Alpha' but we expect you to find it as polished and fully featured as most 'Beta' releases.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No, Robocraft will always be Free-to-play and our prices won't change as a result of shifting from Early Access to a full release in future.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Freejam (the developer of Robocraft) has community in it's blood. The word Freejam is a combination of 'Free' and 'Jam' where 'Free' shows our dedication to keeping Robocraft always Free and 'Jam' stands for 'Jamming'. We like to think of Robocraft as a game that has been built from the ground up with the community and 'Jamming' with the community is ingrained in everything we do.”

UPDATE 1: The dev team are going through a massive brain-storming phase and are dicussing everything from adding mech legs, new weapons, turning platforms (turrets) to even overhauling entire sections of the game.
Also a few of the recent hotfixes have adressed some of the issues I mention below so take the following review with a pinch of salt. Even though I still don't recommend the game; loads of great stuff is in the pipeline. The devs are communicating alot with the comunity lately and if they deliver even half of what they're saying this review will be re-written with a big thumbs-up plastered over it.

Why don't I recomend this game even though I've sunk more that 800 hours into it? Because the game's been slowly getting worse and I stupidly held hope for it.

The developers think they know what the comunity wants but they don't even play thier own game. Long time players who invested heavily into the game get shoved off in favour of a few new players who won't play more than a few hours.

Starting off, new players will find the first steps into the game rather pleasent as you start to build up your robot and everything seems so polished. You upgrade your bot a few times and get placed with people who'd done the same, seems fair so far untill it becomes infuriating once the match-maker shoves you against people with parts you are nowhere near unlocking. These will tear you apart no matter how well you built your robot and this will be a constant problem untill you reach maximum ranking. Once you're at the top though you can't go back because the match-maker takes into account player level and even though you decided to build a low ranking/starter bot, you'll be put vs bots way stronger than you and you'll be cannon fodder for the whole 20 minutes of the match.

Creative designs that take hours to perfect (such as the ones in the pictures above) are thrumped by blobs of armour that don't take more than 5 minutes to make. There is absolutly no point in making a good looking bot as it will hinder you severely. Just because you can build it doesn't mean it'll work in a match. By the way, the physics engine in practice mode is different to the engine used in matches so there is no guarantee that your robot will work when you decide it's good enough for battle.

All in all, the devs over-hype updates, promise things and shelve the idea and throw useless crap at the playerbase to distract them from the core problems of the game.

Move along, theres no longer anything worthwhile to see here.

I wish I could write a good review for this game, I really do.

But I can't.

3-4 months ago, I easily would have given this game 10/10. It had simple but strategic gameplay and complex engineering and building. And if you wanted to, you could build "artbots" and be creative to your heart's extent.

What the game really needed, was to keep it's core gameplay (building and 1 life battling) and polish the battle aspect of the game. The building aspect was great, all it needed was more content and accurate statistics. The battle aspect was great, all it needed was more variety.

But instead, the devs went off on a limb and ruined everything. Instead of enhancing the gameplay, it completely changed it. They threw everything good away to appeal to the moba crowd. And, being a MOBA fan, I hated it. Overclocking ruined bot design, I could spend 8 hours designing a bot, and that bot would perform no better than a simple brick with guns on it that I could design in 5 minutes.

The devs seemed to think staring mindlessly at a tower was fun, so they added towers simply to appear to the MOBA crowd. Everyone hated them, but instead of getting rid of them, they made them more integral to the gameplay.

The devs made bad decision after bad decision. After every update more and more people complained, more people left. The devs refused to listen to the playerbase, and when they did. They listened to the fanatics and white knights instead of the critical but reasoned responses from players who only wanted to see the game succeed.

And after all this, they go chasing after imaginary problems and spend 1 month of dev time doing nothing to improve gameplay, but trying to fix a problem they made 2 updates before, instead of just rolling back the said update.

But hey, we got a new map.

All in all, the devs ruined this game. I highly reccomend ignoring this game if you don't want to be constantly dissapointed until you quit.

This at one stage was by far my favorite game. I still love the game's features and the gameplay in whole. HOWEVER i would recomend this game to anyonne who likes to spend hours of there time grinding to get enough money to buy parts. in the new update i was sent to level 99 and ihad every single item on my tec tree already unlocked. this is not fun. i put hours of my time into this game to try and build and earn my way to the top and then suddenly it just gives it to me.

FAIL. AND !!!! only just before they added a terrible update which made my t7 robot t9. i didnt ask for this and i cant play like this. all of the wonderful creations people make now can not be used because of the update too. in this update they say freedom unleashed. Freedom to what? i now dont want to play the game as my goal has been completely ruined.

Thanks FJ. Next time test your game and think about your players first.

Build whatever you want.
Play with friends.
Graphics and sounds.
The makers of the game listen to the community.
and more.

Recent update have made the ranking system a little off balance. (should be fixed in the near future)
Queues take a long time. (hopefully this is solved soon)
Once you have everything it gets a little repetitive. (They are adding new things to do soon)
Rail guns need a little nerf. (FreeJam is working on this right now)

That's all i could think of for Pros and Cons for Robocraft, hope this helps.

Extra: Please remember this game is in Early Access so there will be bugs, issues, and glitches.
Also if you found this review Not helpful, please leave a comment why. (What I wrote here is my opinion and facts about the game)

Never rated it before now because i was to busy with my addiction to the game. It was great, unique, and well made/balanced overall... Until now... They have ruined ranking. Tiers are gone entirely now, bot level is based on total value/strength. And to be honest its not very accurate; my friend has been playing a few weeks now working up to T10 with me suddenly after this update his bot is equal value to mine and when we goto battle he gets shredded. if we were on the old leveling system mind you he would still be in T7-8 not 10. Please fix the game Freejam i have been playing for like two years and just now you send the game to the sh*ter...

Not a game i would recommend as of now. 2/10 (latest updates)
