What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We've been getting together with friends to play Crawl since the first few days of development. It's a game designed to play again and again, and it's always been a blast showing off new content - watching strategies form, alliances rise and fall, and gaining invaluable feedback. Now it's time we opened it up to everyone, so you can all watch the game evolve and contribute your thoughts and ideas like our friends have been doing over the last year and a bit.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We have enough planned for Crawl Early Access to take us through to at least Early 2015. Beyond then we'll see if we're still having new ideas for things to add!”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Crawl will have more monsters, deities, bosses, weapons, items, traps, environments, things to do, and secrets to discover. Online multiplayer is a possibility, but if your purchase depends on that feature we recommend you wait.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Crawl is fully playable for up to 4 players around the same PC using keyboard, mouse, or controllers. The core experience of a crawl match is complete and ready to play with your friends, or with the AI bots. There are 3 deities to choose from, 30+ monsters to inhabit, loads of weapons and items and one huge boss to battle.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Once early access is complete we intend to raise the price, so get in early and see how the game evolves!”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We're really keen to hear about everyone's experiences playing Crawl. The early feedback we've received from showing the game has already helped shape it for the better. So we'll be hanging out on the steam forums, grabbing your feedback and ideas for new monsters, mechanics and content, and using your collective experiences to perfect the game's balance.”

“The concept – a dungeon crawler where your friends control the monsters – is as brilliant as it is elegantly simple, and it’s got oodles (or blob monsters, as it were) of style to back it up.”
Rock Paper Shotgun

“Grab three friends and gather round; this is a dungeon crawl you won't forget in a hurry.”
US Gamer

“Crawl takes its inspiration from the arcade cabinets of old and plays exactly like a distilled, quarterless version of those experiences.”

Excellent and unpretentious top down roguelike dungeon crawler that's over the top when it comes to fast paced extremely satisfying and gory gameplay. This game is especially good for when you want to sit down and have a quick instant fix of fast action, because matches mostly range between 20-45 minutes, and can even last longer depending on how much you want to level up before facing the boss.

The atmosphere is on point in terms of making you feel as if you're exploring a dank dark dungeon that's haunted by an ancient evil presence, the spirits that haunt you, follow you and possess traps and summon monsters only add to this feeling... there are some references to Lovecraft's work in the level names which is always a nice touch, the rooms and map layouts are randomly generated and every playthrough is different, but unlike many other games with randomly generated rooms you don't start noticing the same variation of a room being repeated until maybe 5 or so hours, there isn't an arbituary set pattern in which you experience rooms either, the only thing that's consistent is that each floor has one store (with each floor having randomly selected different items, making way for different character builds which further ensures each playthrough is unique), one portal that leads to the final boss and one exit that leads to the floor below.... anyway regardless, even if the room layouts aren't always unique... the map layouts are always unique, the repetition of rooms isn't something you're bothered by because you're too busy trying to get the final shot on the hero or you're the hero desperately trying to cling to every last inch of your humanity and you really become absorbed in the addictive gameplay... it's also worth mentioning that the developers are awesome dudes who are very responsive to the community, always respond positively to ideas, negative criticism, and are still constantly showcasing screenshots of different environments / room layouts that are in progress so you can expect to see much more variation in that department in the future, at the rate I see them posting screenshots of new room types, my point on rooms repeating themselves once or twice per match will probably be completely and utterly void by the time this game gets a release... it's also really fun to play single player even if it's designed for co op!

Recommended!

PS: I love the skeletons to death, whenever they laugh or use their ranged attacks where they throw a bone at you, I get a flashback of Evil Dead III: Army of Darkness where the skeleton says to Ash; "I've got a bone to pick with you!" :P

A superb party game with great animation.

Multiplayer Crawl is amazing fun. You can play it against bots and they work great but multiplayer is really where it's at. It feels like arcade games used to back in the golden age of arcade games.

It makes a great party game, but take note that the multiplayer is local only and you will need joypads. One player can use the keyboard but you can't aim precisely using it. You can use this to handicap a player if they're winning too often though.

One player at a time has human form and all the other players gang up and try to kill them with monsters and traps. Kill the player and you take human form instead! The human player advances through the dungeon to attempt to kill the boss and win.

The animations are superb and the controls are responsive and feel great. Even in Early Access the game has a lot of variety and is great fun.

Also the trailers are great, and the main trailer gives a nice overview of the game if you're about to start up a game with new players.

Crawl is a beautiful combination of teamwork, skill, and luck.

In Crawl, your job is to venture through various rooms, where you try to find monsters, which are spawned by other players. Upon slaying these monsters, you gain experience points, which you can use to fight the boss after you have collected enough.

If your friend (a monster) kills you, you swap places, meaning you spawn the monsters, and they fight them. When you kill the adventurer, you gain "hero blood" which you can trade for gold to spend at a shop, spending it on weapons, allies, and abilities.

When you eventually fight the boss, the game doesn't stop being multiplayer. Oh, no. The non-adventurers must actually possess parts of the massive boss and work together to defeat the adventurer. If the adventurer kills the boss, he/she wins. If the boss "kills" (you teleport back aways) the adventurer 3 times, the game is over.

When a game is over, you can unlock new monsters which players can transform their previous monsters into. You also unlock new abilities for monsters and adventurers, etcetera.

Overall, I think that Crawl is a masterpiece. The pixel-art blends very well with the shifts in scene, the soudtrack is amazing, and the gameplay itself is one-of-a-kind.

I rate this game 10/10, and it's still in development. I highly suggest you buy this game if you're even remotely interested.

Awesome gameplay. When you aren't fighting for your life as the rouge, you're teaming up with the other ghosts trying to kill him! A bunch of monsters, traps, and bosses to battle and play, it's been really addictive. Can't wait for multiplayer!

This is a good concept as well as a fun game. I thoroughly enjoy it with or without playing with friends and is really well made. I just wish there were more different bosses; hopefully more will be added in the future considering it is an Early Access Game.

Love the game, been hyped with it ever since the teasers.

Crawl is a really competitive dungeon CRAWL-er (sorry) that brings in the original concept of your friends playing the monsters and fighting to play as the hero to gain levels, equip weapons and buffs to eventually challenge the big boss to achieve freedom.

Overall this game is great and would hugely reccomend it to anybody!

Yeah this is a great party game that I look forward to having four player couch matches with. I watched several LetsPlay videos, which helped me write this review. Single player is fun, but overall don't pick it up unless you plan on having friends over for multiplayer.

Pros:
+Simple to learn gameplay elements (nothing gets too complex so your filthy casual friends don't whine too much)
+Great take on having friends compete in a roguelike
+Devs seem to be still adding stuff

Cons:
-No online multiplayer
-Pixel art is great, but sometimes it can get a bit too abstract, which it borders on here

Overall, I think this is a fun game. Wait for a sale and its even better.

This game is great..But its overpriced.

I feel like they really should have made more out of this game. It starts out great.. you trucking along and oh.. whats this portal.. hmm level 10 to use portal gotchya... then you make to level 10.. omg portal takes you to boss ... ok... kill boss... game over... 10 mins... beat the game... wtf i have only played the game for 1.8 hours and i have beat it like 6 times.

i get that this is supposed to be more of a couch game and a multiple person game but the bots do a good job.
The game play is fun. upgrading weapons is fun. and the currency system feels great.

but the game is SOOOOOO short. i was super pumped that the game was level based... then you kind of realize that each level is kind of the same... and it almost seems like they are random generated. so there is no outside... there is no travel or anything like that. i would have loved to see this in a more open style with armor upgrading aswell.. toss in a minor storyline and some different worlds and more bosses and you have youself a hell of a game.

so... overall i would still recommend it... but i feel like 10 dollars is too much... 4 dollars seems more legit for the amount of gameplay you actually get out of it. but still pick it up for the expirence lol
