What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We've been getting together with friends to play Crawl since the first few days of development. It's a game designed to play again and again, and it's always been a blast showing off new content - watching strategies form, alliances rise and fall, and gaining invaluable feedback. Now it's time we opened it up to everyone, so you can all watch the game evolve and contribute your thoughts and ideas like our friends have been doing over the last year and a bit.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We have enough planned for Crawl Early Access to take us through to at least Early 2015. Beyond then we'll see if we're still having new ideas for things to add!”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Crawl will have more monsters, deities, bosses, weapons, items, traps, environments, things to do, and secrets to discover. Online multiplayer is a possibility, but if your purchase depends on that feature we recommend you wait.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Crawl is fully playable for up to 4 players around the same PC using keyboard, mouse, or controllers. The core experience of a crawl match is complete and ready to play with your friends, or with the AI bots. There are 3 deities to choose from, 30+ monsters to inhabit, loads of weapons and items and one huge boss to battle.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Once early access is complete we intend to raise the price, so get in early and see how the game evolves!”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We're really keen to hear about everyone's experiences playing Crawl. The early feedback we've received from showing the game has already helped shape it for the better. So we'll be hanging out on the steam forums, grabbing your feedback and ideas for new monsters, mechanics and content, and using your collective experiences to perfect the game's balance.”

Reviews

“The concept – a dungeon crawler where your friends control the monsters – is as brilliant as it is elegantly simple, and it’s got oodles (or blob monsters, as it were) of style to back it up.”
Rock Paper Shotgun

“Grab three friends and gather round; this is a dungeon crawl you won't forget in a hurry.”
US Gamer

“Crawl takes its inspiration from the arcade cabinets of old and plays exactly like a distilled, quarterless version of those experiences.”

Crawl is a great game, it has loads of weapons, items, characters and decorative pieces that you can unlock quite easly. Its a realy fun and competitive game to play with friends. I recommend it if you have many friends that can come over and play with you.

The very few thing that I would like the devs to improve are:

~The AI: I found the AI in this game to be to hard even on easy, i mean you can still beat it but i found that it made playing by your self less fun, I know that it is meant to be played with friends and that was alot funner so please ramp down the AI. I mean on easy there attacking the boss on level 2 and 3.

~The multiplayer controls: For keyboard it was abit crowded as multiple keyboards cant overlap keys, that's fine because you can use controllers, the controllers were fine but I played it on my friends mac (xbox controllers dont work) so we all had to use the keyboard.

Sorry i talked more about the problems, the game is great this review is more intended to tell the devs about some of the things that would make the game even better :)

The game is fun, if a bit hectic and fast for my taste. Also brings to mind a game I played (and liked) on IOS called Hero's Quest.

I bought this game a couple days ago and I have to say I am very dissapointed... in the obnoxious, trout-bearded tacowallets I call friends. What I expected to be a competitive and fun game to play with others turned out to be the biggest troll-fest to which I've ever been subjected. If they were in human form, they'd allow me to kill them without a fight just so they could have the satisfaction of teaming up on me. I climbed level after level, giving them precious vitae to evolve into the most powerful BS monsters I've ever faced in any game. I can't count how many times I was reduced to a puddle of blood by a giant death-beam eyeball with wings, or forced to endure a small room full of traps because they just HAD to drop a single blob as I was about to walk through the door. I was the only one able to make it to the boss battles with my humanity intact, but I soon discovered that this was just a complex ruse to make me use up all the portal attempts and have all memory of my character erased from history by getting barfed on by my friends' three headed dragon.
But as long as your co-op parters aren't complete jerks, you'll enjoy this well-polished game.
10/10 would get trolled again.
