In short: A decent smash bros clone. Early Access.
There are so far 13 characters ('Legends') to choose from, and various skins to acquire. Each character has different damage, attack speed, defense and run speeds. As such characters do feel different -- some are tanky, some are pure glass cannons. At the moment all characters are available to play, this will soon switch to a free rotation with permanent unlocks.
On top of individual stats each can equip 2 types weapons (swords, spears, hammers, pistols). Although the weapons are largely the same no matter who wields them (except the looks) each character has a unique special move per weapon type. Then there are mines, bombs, spiky balls to spice up the match.
In terms of movement you can chain up to 3 jumps, dodge, and wall-jump. Nothing fancy, but the 3 jumps do a lot to ensure you stay on the arena. Look at the screenies -- the arenas are tiny, a few small platforms or a single larger one, few walls to bounce back off. And in a typical smash bros fashion with each damage stage you're sent flying with greater speeds.
So far I had problems connecting to online matches though, couldn't even look for a game because I "lost connection to server" every time I tried. I don't know if it's just general server issues or what.
Akin to mobas of the day Brawlhalla monetises skins (character, weapon), taunts, and unlocking characters (with a free rotation). The currency is Mammoth Coints, which currently come at about $1 per 20.
- Character skins cost $4.5, $7, or $10 depending on the 'leet factor' of the skin and include 2 weapon skins exclusive to the character.
- Weapon skins are $2 or $3 each.
- Taunts are $3 or $6 each.
- unlocking characters is not yet available.
