Fun and challenging (sometimes a bit too much due to some obtuse thinking required). Most importantly, though, the story is excellent. I cannot say more than what other reviews have. If it's on sale, grab it ASAP. Even when i's not, I STRONGLY recomend purchasing it if you like puzzle solving games (and, perhaps, even if you don't).

Let me say now that this is a good game and well worth the price tag but not for the reasons I, or the developers, seemed to hope for.

As far as the "being the AI" element goes the developers did pretty good. I was looking forward to playing an emotionless computer that became more and more human as the game went on but to be honest the dialouge and voice acting gave her a personality from the beginning. There definately was evolution but not as much as I was hoping for.

The game style was unexpected, but that is primarily my fault. I didn't look much into this game before playing it. It's way heavier on the puzzle end than the adventure end by a lot. It's basically a sidescrolling escape-the-room game with some action put in. That isn't bad though. Just a quality of the game.

Now the story, in my opinion, really wasn't THAT innovative and nor was the game as a whole. It was adverstised as a super deviant, unique, off the beaten path, indie game and it...sort of delivered. All the elements were there to make it that game but it just missed the mark on most of it's attempts at being innovative and awe inspiring. It's just not that unique or mind bending. The story is still truely good though. Just more normal than I was anticipating.

Over all I'll give it a healthy 7.5/10. It's a good game, it just missed the mark on the innovation and playing as a computer aspect of the game. It's well worth 10 bucks. If it were a 20 dollar indie game I'd be more iffy on it. But for 10 It is definately worth it!

Great game. Minor hiccup; it crashed for me twice after the final boss fight, but i managed to finish the story. can't wait for the sequel. Absolutely worth playing.

This game plays as a standard myst style puzzle game. Walk around, pick up anything you can, smash everything you have against anything in your way tell you find the key. I gave up after having to go to the walkthrough for the 4th time becuase the solution made no sense. I guess I am just not in a puzzle mood right now.

On a plus side, good ambiance.

I purchased "The Fall" during Steam Summer sale... Unfortunately, I bought it together with a couple of other games and wasn't able to ask for refund, because I was beyond the 14 days of evaluation - I just had played 20 minutes to understand that I didn't like this game. While the story is intriguing and the atmosphere right, gameplay is not. The puzzles are sometimes straightforward, sometimes awkward - I just collected everything I found and combined them by chance -- no deeper thoughts. What's more, this is just episode one. 4/10.

The narrative and voice acting are very good. I'm on the fence about recommending it though... the controls are awkward and inconsistent in several ways, and the game suffers from the Adventure Game syndrome of interacting with random elements until something works, and several times they won't even then.

You *will* get stuck and resort to consulting walkthroughs, unless you can intuitively figure out that kicking an acidic mushroom will loosen a support that drops a vaccum tube over a baby crib... well, point is that several of the puzzles don't even make sense after you look them up. Still, I would pick up the sequel if it was on sale.

What looks like a similar action adventure game to The Swapper, The Fall is its own beast. Dark, grimly funny and cleverly written, The Fall takes the player down in to the murky depths of an abandoned robot factory and the ethical dilemnas therein. The art is beautiful but for large portions of the game your only source of light is your torch. That can make puzzles more of a 'scan every inch for something you missed' rather than brain teasers. The music is used mostly as atmosphere so there's not a lot to touch on there. The story is pretty great, actually. Yes, this is a part one of three but The Fall ends on a satisfying note whilst hooking the player in for more. Enjoyable gameplay with an intriguing plot. Recommended.

For all it's dark-tones and dim lightning, The Fall is a beautiful-looking game. The story presented is certainly enticing and the tune it plays lies somewhere between cyberpunk and science fiction and the mixture is good. But those are the game's only good points for me. Even by adventure game standards the logic here is obtuse at best and completely obfuscated the rest of the time. Items and triggers needed to progress the story are often hidden away in the inky blackness of your surroundings, and despite repeated trips back and forth and back and forth you will miss them over and over again.

About half the time, the required solutions will be obvious, but even when you understand what is required of you, linking together the correct sequence of events and the items you need in order to progress can at times be nigh on impossible without consulting a walkthrough. This is triply frustrating when you cannot pick up certain items without triggering a certain event and must traipse back and forth across the level three, four, five times in order to get things done.

Some games are hard, some games are obtuse and confusing, but generally they are honest about these things without being condescending, you understand despite your frustrations that it is the game and not yourself that is the problem. With The Fall, and its complete lack of consistent mechanics outside of combat (which is klunky in the extreme) and what amounts to 'anti-hints' (when there are hints), one feels as though crucial information is being omitted as some kind of prank at the player's expense. Because of this, at the end of the day I did not enjoy myself playing this game, I felt like I had participated in an IQ test written by a narcissist following the logic of a madman, and was then berated for three hours for not having a brain as twisted as that of its creator.

Wonderfully atmospheric game. A blend of puzzle platformer, with point-and-click type adventure, and a bit of light combat. Beautiful visuals, with fantastic use of glitches to emphasize a broken-down environment. Great sound design, further enhancing the eery atmosphere. Gameplay is fairly logical and straight-forward, though some puzzle solutions will at times devolve into "trying every item on every location, in hopes of moving the plot forward".

Despite its faults, this game is a must for any Sci-Fi and adventure game fan.

Amazing game. A little steep on the price (I bought it on Summer Sale for $1.99), but the Devs put alot of work into it and the voice acting is tremendous. I have to admit some of the puzzles are a bit tough and I did use a walkthrough/guide here and there, but all around this is a fantastic game and the first game I've managed to get all achievements in. LMAO.

I don't know if the guy or guys actually played the game while developing it because if they did they would notice the worst controls ever in game... srsly I played a lot of games and this one is in top 5 of those that makes me stop playing just because of the fact that controlls ingame are so annyoing I can't stand it anymore...

This game is an interesting blend of 2D shooter and point and click adventure. The story is interesting and well written and you have some metroidvania style advancement.

So why don't I recommend this game? Simply put, this game is very short and unfinished. The story ends abruptly with a cliffhanger for the next game (which still isn't done 2 years later). Even for an episode 1 (which apparently this is), this is quite a short game.

If the devs ever get around to finishing the story and release all the games in a bundle at a reasonable price I could recommend it, but right now the game as it stands is unfinished and I have a hard time recommending unfinished games that are out of early access (or early access games in general given how few actually get finished properly).

The Fall is a very good game, but kind of short really.

Basically, you start as Sci-Fi Suit, fallen in a weird place or planet, and you have to seek medical help for your unconscious pilot.
You have to go through really creative puzzles and challenges through this survival adventure.
They really put a good work for this game, even the achievements are fun to accomplish.
It looks at first like a casual platformer, but as you play you will feel how good and engaging mechanics this game delivers.
The game is story driven, it shows you how A.I. can have a passion, feeling and willing to sacrifice for the sake of that pilot.

+ Good mechanics.
+ Creative puzzles.
+ Good atmosphere.
+ Good story.
+ Nice achievements.

If you finish the game, check the achievements, you will be thrilled.

I really recommend this game for its creativity and the good mix of Mechanics, Puzzles and Story.

Would play a sequel.

Worth every penny if you like this kind of games.

Disclaimer: I have a credit on this game. My opinion is biased, but perhaps the passion that drove me to get involved says something in itself.

Last year I put my support behind a crowdfunding campaign for the first part of an episodic action adventure game blending light metroidvania gameplay with the kinds of puzzles you might find in point and click adventures, created by Over The Moon Games. At the time, I'd not heard of John Warner nor Over The Moon Games, but The Fall's premise caught my attention and as I got to know John, I knew that my instincts had pointed me in the right direction.

With The Fall's release imminent, I thought I might take some time to share my thoughts on playing the game and building a friendship with its developer as The Fall has taken shape over the past six months.

The (current version of the) game opens with a figure falling against a star filled sky. As it streaks past, a glimpse of what might be a city can be seen below. As the plummeting figure descends, the exosuit surrounding it comes online and automated reactionary systems erect antimatter shielding to protect its occupant from the incredible impact waiting below which will drive the suit deep underground.

You play as an A.R.I.D. artificial intelligence aboard a mark-7 combat suit, activated in response to the imminent danger threatening your pilot. You have no knowledge of your location nor the events which led to your activation. In some ways, the A.R.I.D's situation mirrors the player's as they're thrown into an unknown an unwelcoming environment with the clear, but perhaps bendable goal of seeing The Fall's narrative through to the end.

When I first spotted The Fall's crowdfunding campaign, its dark air of dystopian mystery evoked memories of Delphine Interactive's Flashback (the 1992 original which is playable natively on Linux via the F/OSS REmeniscence engine) and Another World, two hugely influential early cinematic platformers which featured tactical gunplay and movement puzzles combined with exploration and discovery. For me personally, these two games were the first examples of mature storytelling and evocative, compelling plots that I experienced. After playing Another World in 1991, perhaps a decade before I became aware that there was debate over whether or not games should be called such, I knew that games could be art.

The experience of being able to watch someone else's game evolve and unfold (or fold) into something coherent is second only to making your own (something which I'd also recommend). It takes a bit of patience, faith and vision to see the what-could-be inside the what-is, and even then, it can be difficult to predict how a game's direction might shift during development. When John joined us for SteamLUG Cast to talk about The Fall last year, we discussed the notion that there are a myriad possible games which might grow from a concept's scope, and that some of the challenge of directing and designing a good game is in knowing which one of those possible games is the best one to chase, and how to handle feedback which relates to one of the possibilities that won't be getting made.

As the A.R.I.D. seeks out medical aid for her injured pilot, she too explores an uncertain future. With only a minimal suite of suit functions available, the A.R.I.D. quickly finds herself in conflict both from without and from within as the danger response mechanisms required to bring vital systems online present themselves as being a way to protect the very human she is programmed to save at all costs.

My first interaction with John was in an email where I tried to convey how disappointed I was to know that I probably would not have time to be a part of the community or contribute in any meaningful sense. Yesterday John told me he wanted to recognise me in The Fall's credits for the advice and effort I've given since the crowdfunding campaign ended. Sometimes when things don't go according to plan, something positive comes out of it.

It feels to me that The Fall reaches out to touch on concepts like identity, autonomy, the value of life, and the meaning of sentience. The game's atmosphere is brooding instilling first a sense of isolation and impending danger, then oppression and finally desperation as the A.R.I.D. strives to protect her charge in a world seemingly bent on ensuring that her programming remains unfulfilled. What will A.R.I.D. become as the story progresses, what will we learn, and how will that shape the way we appreciate and determine our own actions?

Episode 1 of The Fall will be available May 30th on Steam for Windows, Mac and most importantly, Linux. In the meantime, some of the development update videos can be found on The Fall's Greenlight page.

It has been a pleasure to play a part in making The Fall possible, and I'm looking forward to seeing the response it gets. I hope it's as enjoyable to fresh eyes as it has been to those of us who've had the opportunity to witness its development.

The Fall is a side scrolling, almost point and click style adventure game. It was released in early 2014 on the PC, and then later released on the consoles in July 2015.

Plot wise, The Fall is focused on A.R.I.D, which stands for Autonomous Robotic Interface Device (a good mouthful right?), you navigate through a destroyed industrial factory looking for a medical aid for the human inside of the suite you are in control of.

The gameplay is similar to that of Metroidvania style games, you aim with the right analog stick and shoot. You are equipped with a torch and a gun (eventually), you can switch between your laser sight on the gun, and your flashlight. This game is extremly dark, so you will need to use your light ALOT. Thankfully you don't have to running out of batteries like most games seem to force on you nowdays, your flashlight will never run out of juice.

Parts of this game feel like you are playing a point and click adventure, you have to locate certain objects in the game world by highlighting them with your flashlight before you can interact with them. You can combine objects to make new ones to aid you with puzzles, all of these are common found mechanics found in adventure games. There is some very basic shooting action to be found - when I say basic, it is very basic; don't expect to go into crazy gun battles with the androids, you have one weapon throughout the whole game, it has unlimited ammo, and all of the enemies die in the same amount of shots, apart from the end boss.

Graphically, The Fall is not exactly top of the range graphics; the atmoshere is so dark that they actually get away with having amazing graphics, the game puts alot of effort into the lighting to create the decaying atmosphere that you are set in. If anything, I think it may of been a little too dark, as sometimes it made it a real challenge to be able to see what you are looking for, especially since the flashlights arc is so small anyway.

Much like other metroidvania type games, all of the levels are non-linear, allowing you to explorer to your hearts content, there are a few locked doors which you have to work around, but the majority of the time you can go where ever you want; at first, the vast amount of rooms and corridors you find yourself in is very overwhelming, but you will soon be able to work your way around with ease, even without any sort of map/mini map.

A fullplay through of The Fall took me just under four hours. It starts out quite slowly but soon picks up pace once you are thrown into completing certain tasks in order to get merit points. I managed to get through the game with minimum deaths, maybe 5 or so through the whole game, so it is by no means a difficult game to finish.

I am going to simply just recommend The Fall, it's by no means a bad game, but it also doesn't blow me out of the water. I did enjoy playing it, and there is some really interesting moments in the game; there is a sequel in development, and I am eager to find out where they intend on taking the plot as it stands now. If you go into The Fall with the expectations of it being a point and click adventure game, you will enjoy yourself; however don't go into it wanting a really action filled playthrough as it is not that at all.
