A polished action 2d platformer.
This game is an 'upgrade' of previously released Guacamelee Gold Edition.
Looks simple, but when you play it - it's a bit complicated since it requires a bit of learning mostly for combos and memorizing the pattern of enemies' shields in order to break it. Chaining combos also feels smooth in battle, if you master it literally you'll stomp on enemies.
There's a regular platformer features like Double Jump, Air Combo, but what's best from this game is that the game cleverly incorporates it but sometimes it's irritating and requiring you to replay a part of the level again and again because it requires precise movement and fast fingers. I also like the swapping dimension between living and the dead, required when you progress through the game - quickly reminds me to Giana Sisters Twisted Dream and to some extent, Soul Reaver.
Game graphic overall I'm satisfied, it has unique feel for me. Certainly not pixel level. Performance wise, I play no problem on my mediocre 635m with highest quality settings available for me, no screen tearing, no sudden FPS drops.
Game's a platformer, and so as it stands it's best played with controller. While combos are easy to perform (only directional button + action button each), I'm not sure how fast my fingers would be had I played this with KB/M especially when you're required to be fast finger during a fight or moving thru a tricky level.
As for replayability, when you finish the game you're given hard level to beat. And achievements adding more appeal to come back and obtain. But for one simple playthrough, game's a bit short - I'm clocking at 6.5 hours or so for my first.
There's a leaderboard supposedly for bragging, but how someone beats the game less than 30 minutes baffles me to no end. I checked around and found it requires tricks, well.... not so good in my opinion.
Verdict, good game, but if you own previous title you'll be sorely disappointed that there's no loyalty discount anymore. I'd wait for a sale or bundle since the improvements are not worth 15 extra USDs alone.
