"A heartwarming game with very nice visual art. It challenges you to be a protective parent for your cubs, but the reality of survival rate is saddening."

About This Game

The beauty of nature goes hand in hand with its unforgiving rawness. That is central in Shelter 2, and one of the reasons we chose to make a game about a Lynx. They are in middle of the food chain, and there are far more vicious things out on the cold tundra.

The game follows the life of a mother lynx, starting as a pregnant animal, giving birth and continuing in to a journey of parenthood where nurturing her cubs is paramount for survival. Shelter 2 includes more elaborate gameplay features than its predecessor, such as stamina, different types of movements, jumps and a variety of prey to kill. Besides hunting there are several maternal and hunting features, such as calling the cubs closer, smell for prey, making sure they drink water from rivers and lifting and carrying your cubs from harm’s way.

A vast wilderness awaits

Environments in Shelter 2 are much bigger than its predecessor and allow a lot more freedom than ever before, allowing players to find favorite spots to return to. This time weather and seasons change, harsh winters and bloomy summers awaits you!
The music is once again presented by Retro Family, awarded for their work on the Pid Soundtrack, and the visuals have been reinvented by adding dense atmosphere and lighting to the patterned graphical art style.

Shelter 2 is a project developed and published by the studio Might and Delight. The game have very good rating among players and critics. We can call this game a lynx-mother simulator, we have to take care of her cubs: to protect, feed and warm when the cold comes, but let us have a closer look.

To start, let us determine. This is not the typical kind of survival simulator like DAYZ or Rust, in the Shelter 2 is something that simply is not the typical in survival games. There is warmth that you feel during the game, especially if you are fond of cats, lynx or feline species. Who don’t like cats nowadays? Almost everyone like them. Shelter 2 offers everyone to feel like a cat, except that wild and not in a warm home environment but in the icy tundra, where you are constantly starving and hunted by predators.

The game has a very unusual graphic design that will appeal to fans of origami. All around it looks as if it was made out of paper. This gives the game a certain charm, this you definitely will not see anywhere else. The menu, words and pictures in-game look very unusual, beautiful and at the same time fit well into the overall visual picture of the game. In addition to graphics, the game has a great sound and music, I will not describe it in detail – you will hear it yourself. I will tell you one thing: who can remain indifferent to purr or meow expressed by newly born lynx? Only the one who has no heart.

Gameplay is very simple. Survive and help small lynx to survive. Hunt for different prey: rabbits, field mice, and if you are lucky - deer. Eat yourself caught prey or let cubs to eat - choose what is more important for you in certain situation. After a small amount of playing time young grow up, but not all - those who mother could not save will feed the wolves or other predators. After growing up a generation, we need to nurture and grow new, and so on.

Bad sides of the game? It has some. Game becomes monotonous and boring after some hours. We certainly can do the fulfillment of all the achievements, but for this you will need to find all the hidden objects in the game world, without a map. It is quite difficult and tedious .... Personally, for me, at first I did not quite understand what to do and where to go. Would not prevent any advice or tips.

In general, we have a great game, I would say, a masterpiece, a work of art that can make you really feel on itself the responsibility experienced by animals with offspring and thus are in a constant danger.

"If the soul - is the ability to love, to be faithful and grateful, that animals possess it to a greater extent than most people." - James Herriot

The game can cause warmth, affection
Profound experience for every little cub
Unusual graphic design in the style of origami
Great atmosphere
Sounds and music
Low price of game

Monotonous and boring after a while
The lack of advices or tips

Total: 9/10

*I got the key from developer.

you know you are far too obsessed with this game when you grow emotionally attached to your cubs and die inside when they either die or leave.

Spoilers below.

Its an absoluetly breathtaking and heartfelt game, it gives you real sympathy towards your cubs and you try very hard to keep them alive as if they were real. As you watch them grow older and begin to be able to hunt things themselves you are filled with a sense of pride. Then suddenly they stop walking and when you call to them they don't respond, suddenly they begin to run off into the distance and you try to run after them, but you cant. You go back to your den alone and felt with sadness, until you are awaken in the night by the whispers of the stars again. You follow the path of light they lay until you reach a hill filled with flowers and firelies in the sky. Suddenly another lynx appears in a red glow and you two both look at each other and walk off into the night. Fin.

The game has a few glitches, but nothing game braking. The other lynx at the end I assume was the male lynx that wasn't in the game until, since presumably he died. All my cubs survived, but in the family tree it only showed 3/4 of my cubs and one's line wasn't connected to the rest oddly as if there is a space of where my missing cub should be. Overall great game, very interesting concept, and I look foward to continuing my family tree and getting the expansion pack of the game. I am also glad this game is available for Linux.
