About This Game

The beauty of nature goes hand in hand with its unforgiving rawness. That is central in Shelter 2, and one of the reasons we chose to make a game about a Lynx. They are in middle of the food chain, and there are far more vicious things out on the cold tundra.

The game follows the life of a mother lynx, starting as a pregnant animal, giving birth and continuing in to a journey of parenthood where nurturing her cubs is paramount for survival. Shelter 2 includes more elaborate gameplay features than its predecessor, such as stamina, different types of movements, jumps and a variety of prey to kill. Besides hunting there are several maternal and hunting features, such as calling the cubs closer, smell for prey, making sure they drink water from rivers and lifting and carrying your cubs from harm’s way.

A vast wilderness awaits

Environments in Shelter 2 are much bigger than its predecessor and allow a lot more freedom than ever before, allowing players to find favorite spots to return to. This time weather and seasons change, harsh winters and bloomy summers awaits you!
The music is once again presented by Retro Family, awarded for their work on the Pid Soundtrack, and the visuals have been reinvented by adding dense atmosphere and lighting to the patterned graphical art style.

It's like WolfQuest, except actually fun and with pretty graphics. If you catch it on sale, I'd definitely check it out.

Pros:
-Beautiful art style
-Nice music
-You get to run around as an animal
-Will make you feel emotions

Cons
- Map sucks (there's no compass so it's hard to tell which direction you're going)
-Not much replay value. After you raise the cubs all ther is to do is collect ♥♥♥♥, which you will definitely not have the patience to track down. Even if you do, there's no reward except for achievements.
- Normal price tag is a little much considering you have to pay for DLC to access an area of the map.

I was left speachless at how utterly beautiful this game is. I can't put into words as to how at peace this experience made me feel. The fact that you get to raise something so dependent and defenseless, and watch it grow into something so majestic is breathtaking. I can't wait to continue my family tree.

If you play with the Mountains DLC, the game is great.
I love Shadow of the Colossus, Okami, Ecco the Dolphin DC, Abzu, Journey, The Witness... This kind of stuff. Actually Shadow of the Colossus is the only game in my 25 years gaming experience that brought real tears to my eyes, both from sadness and happiness.
Aeris ? The number of materias I got back is the number of ♥♥♥♥s I gave when she "left". The Terror Tears -Silent Hill type- aren't relevant here, your cubs don't end up eviscerated by awkwardly sexy zombie Nurses.
BUT some of them will end up eviscerated off-screen obviously, because mother nature is damn cruel, and you could die of exhaustion trying to catch the big ♥♥♥ eagle who just attacked you and is flying away with your children. In my first playthrough, I watched one of them die of hunger, the second one disappeared in a forest fire, and the third one just vanished behind me after I heard a strange noise. I think it was a fox. Later when the actual eagle attacked, I took the last one in my mouth and I ran, and the eagle tried to kill ME. I didn't meet the wolves or the polar bears yet. I'm so afraid. So mayyyyybe the Terror Tears are relevant in the end
I've found this kind of great emotions and feelings again in Shelter 2 with the Mountains DLC.
And I think it's a real challenge to make a real animal in a video game, because we all know how they move, how they look. Nobody ever saw a real Wyvern. Yet.
In Shelter 2 they are vey well done, AND done in an artistic way. Musics are beautiful. The animations are sometimes a little stiff, and obviously the game is not an AAA, has no real long-term challenge, but it has a very nice feeling of exploration-survival, a unique graphic touch and above all it provides a wide range of emotions if you are willing to take them.

I think this is the best gam ive ever played. I have no words for how much i love this game. I will die if it means that this game could go further. I have almost all the shelter games i have shelter 2 and the mountains expantion for it(THE BEST) i also have paws a shelter 2 game. i dont have shelter 1 tho i wat it but ive moved on to be SUPER exited For Meadow!!!!!!!!!!!!! I already love the consept of being a mother lynx or a cup but the AI was always the same. Sneak Up on bunny, bunny runs, run after bunny, kill bunny, cubs come running up, feed 2 cubs while the other 2 start to starve. its fun tho how you can explore with them, but ive always been a huge fan of multiplayer animal games and ive been a huge fan of the shelter games so im counting the days and my money hoping i wont burst of exitment. IDK how much the game will cost but im betting $20.00 although ive saved $60.00 for it lol Im super exited for a multiplayer shelter and im wandering if it will be like wolfquest where you have the servers to join and you need a pass word and username to enter... SUPER EXITED ABOUT MEADOW

Oh my god. This game. Words can't explain the amount of emotion it took from me. I've never played anything like it and I don't think I ever will. If you're unsure about this game, don't be. It is unbelievably worth it.

I had this game on my wishlist for awhile and purchased it when it became bundled. By reading others reviews I thought this game had a good story, touching, interesting. I was wrong. It lacks story, if you are not paying attention to the hints you will not know what to do, the environment is boring, just a lot of bunnies.

First time playing and I wasn't paying attention to the hints and had to restart because I didn't know what to do.

Second time playing ended the game in 10 minutes. Found a mate, done!

Highly atmospheric! Gameplay is bare bones and is mostly about enjoying the scenery. I don't think its worth 14.99 though. I got this in a bundle. Did make me cry at the end ;(

(My spelling may be off) I personally enjoyed this game. It is repeatitve but all games like this are. The thing I loved most about this game is the artstyle and the realism. Well...the realism is iffy. After playing the game for a while you're able to handle EVERY threat easiy. The interisting about the handling is that everyone has a different way of going about things. If you decide to purhase the mountains DLC then you'll be presented with all kinds of new dangers, the game challenges you to figure out how to handle them. Some people freeze with the raptor (bird no dinos in this game) or back off of the cubs and attack it when it dives down. It doesn't give much diversity on how you want to play after that. Most people complain about maps size and honestly the map is huge and nearly doubles after the DLC is added. Others say that the game is too easy and there's no reason to move from the main area. If you're looking for a game with a hard play then change it to survival mode. There are three things that I didn't like 1. The cubs have the same pelt throughout generations 2. Hardly any real dangers 3. The price is crazy. It was a very, very short game for the price they're asking. I suggest wait for October 26th when Meadow is released and if you're wanting more, you should purchase this game. I'm more in between on this but I couldn't bring myself to click the 'no' box.

Well, yes, this is a fantastic game from the artistic point of view.
Man those cubs are so lovely. So you will get in love with this mother and those cubs.
The sounds are really cool, the very strange style is funny and appealing.
The crawling toward your prey is really well thought but hey... that's almost it.

It would be an artistic demo I would back up that but this is a game, it's kinda poor.
You basically just have to hunt for preys and avoid dangerous predators all the time which is really fun and well made... but doing that over and over to feed your cubs is not really fun.

There is a system of collectibles but I got bored before starting to collect those things so I don't know all the game.

shame for such a great effort on the style, really.

I will keep this short. The good parts of this game are that it's unique, has some charm, and I personally liked the art style.

The bad parts of this game are that the controls are a little funky(though at least rebindable), it's too easy, the stealth system just didn't seem to work well(bushes and such did nothing for me), and honestly there just isn't a lot to do. Your time will be spent doing two things. Making sure your cubs are close and killing rabbits. No interaction with the cubs, they don't do anything but follow and eat, no need for shelter. Really this game doesn't have a lot to offer and despite taking only a little over an hour to complete I was bored of the simple and not well done mechanics.

Of course it all comes down to what you get for the price and for 17 canadian it's just not worth it.

Shelter 2 is an expansive, open world game that follows the growth of four baby lynxes and mother lynx. The visuals are pleasant and artistic, making the game feel more like an extended art piece. The gameplay can be lacking, though, as the only goals are to hunt prey to feed your young, and optionally collect objects spread throughout the world.

I had pined after this game after playing Shelter, so I came into it with expectations that it would be similar to Shelter, but with a bit more. While Shelter offered the story telling aspect related to nurturing young babies as a mother, Shelter 2 is does not have a solid plot (apart from cubs-grow-up).

Hunting: As the mother lynx, you must take into mind the remaining stamina and consider if that will be enough to run after a prey. To catch a prey, you have to intersect their running path (or sometimes you will randomly pick up a frog). You have the option to offer the kill to your young, or to eat it for yourself. However, I've found that it isn't necessary for the mother lynx to eat or drink at all throughout the game.

Visuals: The seasons have good pacing, and the game feels like there's always a little more for me to discover, as if on a walk. My only criticism is that the collectibles are often hard to distinguish from the environment and because of that, it makes the task seem almost too difficult. There are too many collectibles, and some are so small and easy to miss.

Plot: I appreciated the ability to name your cubs are the beginning of the game. Unlike Shelter, Shelter 2 made me feel more attached to the cubs. I felt the a similar heart break to Shelter when losing a cub, but with a larger magnitude as they felt individual and real. The 'plot' itself is mainly driven by texts cut into the game as the cubs progress through their adolesence.

Overall, I'd recommend the game for extremely casual gamers. It's relaxing, apart from some of the threats present to the young, and the ending credit scene ties the game together pretty well. Go into the game with an exploratory mind set, rather than a completionist mindset and just enjoy the scenery.

I haven't played much of this game, but so far I'm rather enjoying it. It's the perfect tool for procrastinating your Mammalogy exam on carnivores. "I now AM a carnivore, I don't need to study them!" I said to myself. I'm sure playing this game will all be worth it once I need to determine the differences between a bobcat skull and a lynx skull.
