About This Game

Braid is a puzzle-platformer, drawn in a painterly style, where you can manipulate the flow of time in strange and unusual ways. From a house in the city, journey to a series of worlds and solve puzzles to rescue an abducted princess. In each world, you have a different power to affect the way time behaves, and it is time's strangeness that creates the puzzles. The time behaviors include: the ability to rewind, objects that are immune to being rewound, time that is tied to space, parallel realities, time dilation, and perhaps more.
Braid treats your time and attention as precious; there is no filler in this game. Every puzzle shows you something new and interesting about the game world.
Key features:
  • Newly added Steam Cloud support
Save your in-progress game to the cloud, then play where you left off from on any Steam connected computer.
  • Forgiving yet challenging gameplay:
Braid is a 2-D platform game where you can never die and never lose. Despite this, Braid is challenging — but the challenge is about solving puzzles, rather than forcing you to replay tricky jumps.
  • Rich puzzle environment:
Travel through a series of worlds searching for puzzle pieces, then solving puzzles by manipulating time: rewinding, creating parallel universes, setting up pockets of dilated time. The gameplay feels fresh and new; the puzzles are meant to inspire new ways of thinking.
  • Aesthetic design:
A painterly art style and lush, organic soundtrack complement the unique gameplay.
  • Nonlinear story:
A nonlinear fiction links the various worlds and provides real-world metaphors for your time manipulations; in turn, your time manipulations are projections of the real-world themes into playful "what-if" universes where consequences can be explored.
  • Nonlinear gameplay:
The game doesn't force you to solve puzzles in order to proceed. If you can't figure something out, just play onward and return to that puzzle later.

Fun little timey-whimey puzzle game where time rewinds/moves/etc when you move. It makes you feel really clever whenever it finally snaps but can be sort of frustrating whenever you know how to do something but cannot do it.

Pros:
+ Time-shifting puzzles are fun at first, and it layers on new abilities so it doesn't get boring.
+ Music is pretty (at first)
+ Graphics are nice (at first)
+ Story somewhat intriguing (at first)

Cons:
- Time-shifting puzzles get incredibly finicky and rely upon a very small margin of error for success.
- The puzzle mechanics are not well taught and will lead to many "Seriously?" moments when googling the answer and realizing it was just something you SHOULD have been taught, but were not. (I'm looking at you, puzzle-piece platform gimmick)
- Music is incredibly short and repetitive and gets distorted horribly during time-shifts
- Graphics lose their splendor after aggravation
- Story goes....nowhere. I enjoyed parts of it. I enjoyed how it hinted at the puzzle's themes. But it wasn't coherent, left loose ends, and just didn't feel like a story.

I got this on sale, would not pay the full price. I beat the game in around 3~4 hours. I know there are a lot of positive reviews, so your mileage may vary. I wouldn't recommend it. Just watch a video of someone else playing it if you're interested.

Some rare puzzle games allow you to stare at the screen for about five minutes, until the solution just pops into your head with a satisfying "Ah-ha!" moment. Solving a puzzle game without the annoying desire to look for a solution on the internet is a rare case these days, and I can only give that credit to one other game - Portal 2.

If you love puzzle games and platforming, this is a amazing game with a deep and brain grinding mechanic.

Braid is one of the best arguments for video games as an artistic medium. This game is made up of much more than than its pleasantly detailed art style and its perfectly meditative background music with a few clever puzzles thrown in for interest. No, Braid is a game that focuses on exploring a concept, on teaching a truth, through challenges it presents to the player. Each of the game's six worlds begins with a few paragraphs of pure exposition, but the purpose this serves is more to provide context to the questions that follow than as storytelling. With the primer read, the world begins with its unique take on time manipulation - its own 'what if' in the form of puzzles. Solving these puzzles grants the player a piece of a larger picture and, more importantly, a better understanding of the complexities involved in playing a scenario out over and over again until the desired result is achieved. These 'lessons' are confined to their own particular world; the new mechanics don't build on each other, which is in itself another lesson.
As incredible as teaching through player experimentation is, what makes Braid truly great is all of that pretension can be skipped by if so desired. The player can run right past any annotations without pause; what remains are puzzles that are just as engaging, art that is just as charming, and music that is just as sublime.

One hell of a game. Definitely one of the most interesting indie games of 2009 and still a great go. With puzzles which improve on each level, the game is not an easy one, but its intriguing, beautiful and has a great soundtrack (which, by the way, comes and goes as the time-shifter...). Super recommended!

Extremely boring and cryptic story makes for quite a bad game. I tried this game, really I did, but I never actually was able to enjoy it. Many reviews say that it's a "work of art" or that it'll be "the most soul wrenching thing you'll ever play" and I just have to disasgree with that statement completely.

A very interesting, and unique platformer. The experience that you get from this game can go from relaxing, to flat-out frustrated and confused if you are not an experienced puzzle/problem solver. And the soundtrack is absolutely amazing! Although the plot seems obfuscated, I think what the developers tried to do is make the players interpret and make it out for ourselves. Thus is the beauty of this masterpiece.

Simple, fantastic and challenging. Surery a game that will not get old with time. Wait, I said time? What if I could forget the puzzle solutions and play this as a fresh experience forever? Unfortunately that is only possible in Braid universe, not ours!!

I gravely underestimated this game at first view. It looked like an amateur Flash game with a price tag, but boy was I wrong. The production quality is actually very high and the music and artwork are very charming. What really makes this game great, however, is the quality of the gameplay. Fully completing this game is not an easy task. The platforming puzzles are sometimes very tricky and require a lot of thought. The controls are solid, however, so there's no frustration there. I wish I had realised how good this game was 8 years ago.

If you're interested in it, as a concept, or you've tried similar games and so this one interests you - give it a run. You'll probably like it, or at least parts of it; maybe even long stretches of it. Chances are good that you, like me, will find parts you dislike and wind up putting this game on the backburner. I intend to give Braid another try sometime soon, but I feel the need to make it clear that the game did not maintain my interest the first time around.

Braid is a puzzle game that manages to feel like an action/adventure game through the exploration of it's unique time-bending mechanics and intriquing hints at story. It's worth playing just to experience the novelty of a different kind of story, and as technical experiences go this is about as polished as it gets.

If you can get it on sale, check it out!

Braid is good, but I feel like the game is a little bit overhyped. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of platformers to begin with, but this game does bring something new to the table. The levels are interesting, for sure - lots of time-and-space based puzzles, which I thought was a neat take on platforming. It's a little like Prince of Persia and Mario had a lovechild.

Braid's worth giving a shot, but I'd wait to pick it up on a sale. The play time feels just about right, but I doubt whether I'd feel the same way if I had paid full price.

Review in English/Spanish
Análisis en Inglés y Español:

English:
Ingenious puzzle/platformer with amazing visuals, unfortunately after a couple hours I stopped enjoying myself as the difficulty curve grows exponentially and my patience ran out. probably wasn’t smart enough. Recommended either way.

I guess everything has been said about Braid already. Brilliant puzzle platformer with an emphasis on puzzles. Manipulate time in different ways to collect puzzle pieces and set them together to finish each of the 6 worlds. No real reason not to play this if you like video games.

Although perfectly possible with keyboard I'd recommend a controller - especially for the speed run if you want to try that.

Amazing game.
The time mechanic and puzzles related are pretty fun to experience, and some of them really challenging; not difficult, but they challenge you in the way you have to look for other options, try other things rather than the usual, and that's amazing.

The story is just superb, it has an incredible plot-twist at the end and in the epilogue all things connect together.
It's pretty confusing at first but either with help of general knowledge to get some references or with some help from google.
When you discover the true meaning of the story, you will get mind-blown anyways.

11/10 Amazing concept

Braid is one of the most excellent designed puzzle/platform game I ever played, it is very challenging (especially in the last worlds) but still not frustrating hence extremely satisfying.
The art is beautiful, colorful and subtle; the music is superb and melancholic; the story is mature, cryptic and poetic.
This game is a perfect mix of these elements and it's an essential experience that should not be missed.

Braid is gorgeous, smart and very entertaining! One of the best puzzle games I have ever played, not to mention its soundtrack which adds to the mystery and charm of the game.
I first played Braid on Xbox 360 back in 2008, when I was done playing 360, I bought it again on PS3 back in 2010 and played it again! Then finally, when I went back to PC gaming in 2013, I once more bought it and played it on Steam! I guess you got the pictue?
An absolute must-have and a great timeless classic!

This game is beautifull. I was able to understand this game more after I watched "Indie game: the movie" (you can buy it here on steam) where creators of FEZ, Super Meat Boy and Braid are telling, why they created those games, what did they feel, what they wanted to tell, what they hoped for... Excellent game. Wonderfull soundtrack.

Bullet points:
  • Very pretty
  • Has pleasant music
  • Creative puzzles/mechanics
  • Challenging without being frustrating (mostly)
  • Full ending is ridiculously hard to get
  • Obnoxiously beats you over the head with metaphors

Braid is a very clever little puzzle game with gentle, pleasant music. It's not super difficult but it's not exactly easy, either - it falls into a nice "kind of challenging but not frustrating" place - that is, unless you want to unlock the true ending. Moving through the levels and collecting the puzzle pieces is a fun affair, but the 8 special puzzles for unlocking the alternate ending range from fun to "the developer is giving me a giant middle finger and I don't know what I did to deserve this." I have been told that the sadistic difficulty/tedium of some of the special puzzles is a metaphor.

Your character, a cute little guy in a suit coat named Tim, starts off with the ability to stop, rewind, or fast-forward time, which he retains throughout the game. At first this is mostly used to rewind mistakes, but as you progress you'll find several other uses for it. As you enter each new area you will be given small pieces of writing about moments of Tim's life. The little vignettes are nicely written and interesting to read. They are mostly unrelated to the actual story, but they tell us about Tim's character and set an appropriate tone for each setting with hints at that level's special ability. Each area also has a simple jigsaw puzzle to collect and assemble. The images in the puzzles are unrelated to the story. I have been told that the images in the puzzles are metaphors.

The overall story is... About 95% of the time it seems to be a spoof of the original Mario games taken to a strange extreme: Tim is an eccentric dude with an obsessive personality, and he is totally fixated on finding a princess. In the last area or two it then beats you over the head while screaming "It was a metaphor!!" Frankly it's a bit obnoxious. If you have the patience to collect all of the extra objects for the true ending, the game will explain the metaphor in detail (but it's easy to figure out even with the ending that doesn't explicitly come out and say it).

To summarize: This is a fun puzzle-platformer with an eye-rollingly pretentious story. Metaphors. Metaphors. Metaphors.

Is there anything left to say about Braid that has not already been said a thousand times through the years?

It was one of those games that defined the emerging indie scene that proved you don’t need a multinational entertainment company or a suicidal Japanese developing team to produce a great game.
All it took was the sacrificial offering of one man and his career.

Years later Braid is still one of the defining indie games that anyone interested in modern gaming just has to play. If you had the luck of living under a rock these last years it’s still one of the most climatic endings a 10 hour time investment can offer.

It’s simply put a game for the history books.

so recently i heard that if you read the books backwards in this game, like the game itself also plays out, they actually form a cohesive plot that makes more sense than the atom bomb metaphor that people thought was relevant for some reason

it's not exactly a huge revelation though because it can be summarized as "oh gee i didn't need to look for my princess because she was with me the whole time i'm such a big stupid idiot"; like i'm not arguing that it's an outdated message but it's definitely presented as more complex than it really is

anyway Braid's still a great game imo, and a very beautiful one too, like i'd stop playing just to watch the backgrounds animate because they're so pretty to look at

that's all i had to say, ok bye
