8/29/2014 Ver. 1.75 Update

The Version 1.75 update to One Way Heroics includes the following changes:

  • Fixed a bug where if multiple spear attacks occurred, two additional attacks would follow each one.

  • Increased the drop rate for Slender Spear by 1.5x.

  • Increased the chance that Slender Spear will appear in shops by 1.2x.

  • The “My First Vault” and “My First Perk” achievements will now automatically be obtained upon starting the game if you meet the prerequisites. This was done because if you copied save data from other DRM-free versions for instance, there was a chance that these two achievements would become unobtainable.

  • Added a little more content to Fairy Iris’ guide.

  • Added content to the Readme; now includes some of the FAQ.

In One Way Heroics, you take on the role of an intrepid adventurer who must travel across the land and face the Demon Lord before a mysterious darkness engulfs everything.

Darkness always approaches from the left, and with each movement, attack and action you take, the darkness creeps ever closer. Forced to run right, you'll encounter any number of monsters, allies, thieves and shops on your desperate journey to stop the end of everything.

The good news is that you don't just have access to one world. You have access to all of them. Born with the mysterious power to travel to other dimensions, you can choose which dimension you wish to travel to in order to get to the Demon Lord.

Dimensions vary based on their name. One might be full of lush forest landscapes full of adorable animals and cunning thieves, while another might be full of corrupted hellscapes infested with demons. You might find likeminded heroes willing to journey with you, or you might meet no one and be forced to venture into the unknown alone.

Like a dimension you previously visited? Simply input the name at the Dimensional selection screen before you begin your journey. Want to try your luck with a random dimension? Type any word that pops into your head, and watch as One Way Heroics builds you a world based on the name you chose.

Infinite permutations. Infinite worlds. Infinite adventure.

This game is addicting and if you like old jrpg games/zelda I can near promise you that you will love this one.

It is hard to sum up One Way Heroics into just a few words, so let me give you a couple paragraphs. (If you're the sort that likes to go "tl;dr" then just scroll to the bottom, but I mean, then why are you even reading reviews to begin with?)

I picked this game up for <$0.60 when it was sale during the summer. I have to say, those were the best $0.60 I have ever spent. One Way Heroics doesn't appeal to you with stunning graphics, rich storytelling, or intricate gameplay. Instead, it as more of retro gaming, silly short tales, and an easy to pick-up set of controls. Now you might be wondering, why would I want something like that? Arguably everything but simplicity of the controls could be considered negative or at least niche. One Way Heroics doesn't offer high spec gaming while emptying your wallet - what you're buying is meaningless fun and entertainment.

When I first opened this game and started an adventure, I found myself with my silly little 2D character talking to a "Naughty King Victor" about the darkness at the left of my screen that would attempt to eat me until I killed the Demon Lord. Yes, clearly the storyline could use some work, but as I struggled to kill weak mobs and then stronger demons I found myself falling for this game. Everything was fairly straightforward and the desire to complete achievements, "save the world," and become a true hero compels you to play over and over again. It doesn't take several hours to do a run through like a quest in some RPG, just 30 minutes or so if you're short on time. Yet, you can play longer sessions that go for tens of hours depending completely on what you want to do and how much time you have - and those hours? They were some fun hours.

I won't try to tell you that you'll be so entranced with One Way Heroics that you'll spend thousands of hours playing it - you probably won't. But it's easy to lose 10, 20, maybe even 100 hours of your life having fun by sending your hero towards the right of your screen. Was that worth my 60 cents while it was on sale? Definitely. Is it worth the full $3.49? Absolutely. Most of us play games to have fun - and One Way Heroics delivers.


If you're a hardcore gamer looking for a game with brilliant graphics and intricate/competitive gameplay to drop thousands of hours on, I think you're better off somewhere else.
If you're someone looking to spend 10-100 hours having fun in your spare time? Buy One Way Heroics.

I love this game it should be more the classes are diffrent and unique the drawings arnt triple A but i like them.
it can be so hard and so easy at the same time.
I like the idea of a dimensional vault and hero points.

so in a nutshell

loads of achievments
trading cards
decent classes good pixel and art style
dimensional vault so you can transfer items from 1 char to another

can be really frustrating
music can get a bit repetative
game gan be really harsh and unforgiving in some areas

really love this game hope they make sequel

This game. This game has a lot of fun things to do. It's a simplistic but still very hard game.
YOU WILL DIE! But it won't be that bad since you can keep the stuff you like and then go on and use it on the next character...or not. You could keep leveling that piece of equipment to the best there is so that you can beat the big bad dude.

This game also has an interesting plot that isn't shoehorned in your face. You have to find it, and to do some you must* Goes on to ramble about how long it might take one to find and also why* But after that it's smooth sailing.

The classes are very varied. I mean yeah you could change them to your will sure but their core mechanics is one thing you can't remove thus it (The game) reccomends you to play with that class strengths.

It's a simplistic yet very fun game.

OWH is a mixture between dungeon crawlers, JRPGs and exploration games. The story is surprisingly deep, but the combat is very simple. As soon as you unlock the hero class and combine it with the brawler feat, the game gets really easy. But it still is a lot of fun. Somehow it left my wishing for more.

I got this game on a sale, long time ago, for a dumb and extremely low price, something like half an euro, or even less. To tell you the truth, for such a price, I was expecting something horrible, dreadful, like an 8-bit Ride to Hell. Did I got surprised? Yeah! Buuuuuuut as usual, let me explain the BAD things the game has first, so we can take them out of the way:

The game is kind of short. Of course, for such a price, you can understand it, so it's not that big of a deal. Besides, this is a Rogue-like game, and rogue-like games are usually short, but change in every playthrough, this is no different from the standard on that regard.

The other thing that I did not like at all, is the lack of multiplayer. This game had such extreme potential for a Coop experience, but instead you can play the same randomly generated world at the same time as one of your friends, to see who goes further...INSTEAD OF PLAYING TOGETHER, AND HAVING FUN! I was indeed dissapointed by that, by looking at the captures of some friends that got the game, and by looking at the pictures and videos of the Steam-Store, I was expecting to play at least with one friend in a journey to save the world by punching demons on their d#cks. You know, the usual.

Now, let's talk about the GOOD stuff, pretty much everything else. As I said, it's a Rogue-Like. At the start of the playthrough you select the kind of character you desire to control, and special skills for you: You want to be fast? You want to be strong? You want to use magic? You want to start with a companion? You want to start with insane amoutns of gold? It's your choice, and it's indeed well made. I really did enjoy starting in different ways, and testing different strategies.

The game pretty much goes like this: The world is being taken out by some sort of "Dark Sonic Boom" (Damn Obama, he stole that from Guille!), and ANYTHING NEAR THE LEFT SIDE OF THE SCREEN IS F#CKED. Your goal is to travel to the right, getting stronger, surviving the wilds, getting better gear, meeting other people, saving lives, and if you get far enough, saving the world. It might sound simple enough, but the game mechanics make this journey, a journey to remember: First of all, you have to eat, or your character will get tired. Sounds easy enough? Well, there's not that many free food out there, so you have to make sure to visit any Inn or Town and get supplies before they got suck up into Oblivion (I bet that portal leads to Obama's #sshole, NOW THAT'S ONE SICK WAY TO END UP DEAD). Not only that, but your equipment won't last forever. Your stuff has limited use, for example, 100 uses on a sword. Once you swing it for the 100th time, the thing breaks, and it's lost forever. There are ways to repair it and make it last longer, but you should make sure to AT LEAST CARRY 1 BACKUP WEAPON. Infact, I always try to carry at least 3 weapons on myself. And armor? HAH, THOSE THINGS BREAK TOO, SHIELDS INCLUDED! You're far pass f#cked on these lands, specially later on when enemies start to get dangerous!

For a cheap game, there's a lot of fun to be had in this game, and I do recommend it. The game is worth 3€ WITHOUT sales, and that's already cheap enough, on sales it usually lowers to 1€ or so. It's up to you to buy it or not, but I do recommend that you give it a try.

if you'r lookin for a fun lil indie game with a fun story you better do a ♥♥♥♥in 360 flkip and moonwalk the ♥♥♥♥ outta here this story is not fun it is bad and sad and ♥♥♥♥ing mad its not no it should be grounded ok

Honestly one of the best games that came out in the last 5 years
10/10 story 10/10 gameplay 10/10 balance between classes considering hero does 1k dmg while bard does thirthy

This game is brutal no matter what difficulty you pick, in best possible way as a rogue-like. It has a VERY surprising amount of depth for a game that is by default played on a resolution of about a smart phone (what you see in the screenshots is what you get, and full-screening it does not help its prettiness!). Graphics-wise, it's incredibly indie -- see the character "portraits" in the bottom left corner that seem to be sketches made a bored developer, especially Swordmaster Class C for a laugh.

If you get this game, it's for its gameplay, which does one thing, but does it really, really well. The turn-based gameplay with a constant timer and emphasis on movement will make it incredibly addicting for old-time Rogue-like players, as experience points (read: monsters to farm) and treasure may be within arm's reach but inaccessible due to the choices you have to make. The item appraisal system makes every item a mystery and makes even a new starting sword drop a desired reward, as durability constantly counts down with few ways to repair items and replenish supplies. Even when you're on top of the world, you'll feel pressured and challenged by item weights and inventory limits, decreasing energy and stamina, and other factors to encourage you to weigh risk and reward ("how long should I wear this Training Bracelet, which cripples my stats for more experience?") to get ready for the next area.

The "hidden" parts of the game are by far the most enticing. You simply have to go out and find out for yourself how to get access to things like Party Members, Force powers (spells), the Dark Brotherhood, Hidden Elf Villages, Goddess Statues, and Key of Seals and their associated doors. After each death or victory, the progression system encourages trial and error, mixing and matching unlockable classes and perks with rotating featured Dimensions and allowing players to access the Dimensional Vault to carry over a limited number of items. The game is well-supported outside of a playthrough with a replay system, a hall of fame for each dimension and for your overall profile, and, of course, the different daily Dimensions featured. It does not hold your hand after kicking you out of the castle with a fairy of questionable use, explaining only the most basic and necessary mechanics until you recruit party members: you have to go out and discover it for yourself, since at a base level the game is so simple! Even the limited story and simple humor is fun to discover, especially as more party-member-specific endings are unlocked.

One of the best games on Steam under $5, and amongst my favorite Rogue-likes; highly, highly recommend.

in one direction hero the year is 2050

in 2050 there are 500 trillion people alive and they all drive SUVs and then a load of smoke from the exhausts builds up and starts eating everyone. scary

it is your destiney as the one direction hero to run away from the smoke and let everyone else die so that you can be the last living person and win the entirye game and feel good

i like this game lots because i have always want to run away from smoke and now i have the perfict game for it!

I decided to write an in depth negative review beyond "Its ♥♥♥♥" that the other negative reviews seems to boil down to.

Whenever I start a game and its by default in such a small screen that you cant really see anything, I get a bad feeling. Turns out you can pick between three settings in a windowed mode. So small you cant see, Slightly bigger you cant see, and about the size of a tablet screen. There are no more visual options to speak of.

There is no tutorial so its going to take a second to figure out what you are supposed to be doing. The mechanics aren't very deep but it takes a while to get used to the awkward controls that will have you moving with the arrow keys, attacking with the enter key, and using the menu with the escape key.

You can unlock new heros and new perks as well as carry over a few items from playthoughs. Your progress resets everytime though so its a very samey feeling every time. It really has the JRPG grinding thing going on. There isnt much else to it. The story is the basic of basic stories, there arent many other characters, and the new items are kind of boring minor stat increases.

As a rogue like game it fails because it much to grindy to be any fun and as an rpg it fails because other than having your hero level up, it is missing any other rpg elements.

All in all its a novel idea but is plauged by some strange design choices and a horrible options menu.

Addictive but very frustrating.

One Way Heroes mixes JRPG mechanics with Arcade Style gameplay for a fun but fairly frustrating experience.

You start off with a choice of three classes to pick from and accumulate "Hero Points" which can be used to unlock classes and perks which makes subsequent attempts slightly easier. However, due to the huge Luck Factor (which a lot of roguelike games are notorious for) these perks will serve little good as you can easily find yourself overwhjelmed by enemies that are well beyond your current level of power.

Then there is the killer terrain itself, if you veer to far in the opposite direction that the game wants you to go then you die, hence the game's title. You also have two levels of doifficulty to play on which more unlock the more you play through and complete runs. Graphics look like that of standard RPG Maker faire and the music, is pretty good. All in all I wouldn't recommend buying this unless it's on sale due to the insane luck factor involved in gameplay. If you obtain this as a gift then play in incraments lest you find yourself hurling your keyboard/controller in frustration at various points.

I gladly recommend OWH, because the game is worth the small asking price (about that of a gallon of milk), for the love that obviously went into it.
The bad news is, the keyboard controls are annoying. They make the already challenging difficulty of the game seem more frustrating than it would otherwise be. It makes me want to get up and go drink some milk instead of preparing to battle the goblin king. I would love to see more of a hotbar setup or an Ys-like setup utilizing mouse buttons. However, the developers offer controller support, so I might not be whining about this aspect of the gameplay if I had had a controller. For fumbly interface reasons, I would not call the game addictive.
The good news is, I will probably come back to this game sometimes, because it is amusing, challenging, and tends to receive updates. I can see how you could love this game more than I do.
