TL;DR: Very challenging platformer set in a dark fantasy setting. Bring a gamepad and a bucket for your tears of failure.

Have you been looking for a challenging platformer? You might just have come to the right Store page.

Blood of the Werewolf presents you with 10 levels of ever-increasing difficulty, starting with mere sewer alligators and fish men and concluding with insta-killing spikes, saws and chasms with fireballs and Grim Reaper himself messing with every jump you make.

Most negative reviews call its difficulty a bad thing, but I felt that was what made it so satisfying to 100% this game. Let's get into details.

You play as Selena, a werewolf whose child has been kidnapped by (other) occult creatures. The dark fantasy theme is refreshingly different. There has been a war between mythic creatures: Dracula, Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll stand in the way of you and your baby. Story advances as animations and voiced cutscenes between levels and I found it quite interesting and nicely written. Orchestrated string and organ music fits the theme very well.

Interestingly, there's an in-game bestiary that provides lore about the enemies and basically tells the background of the story (in addition to various movies/cutscenes). Achievements are conveniently also shown in-game as a separate Quests menu, so you don't need to visit Steam Overlay to review them.

Being a werewolf you turn into a strong wolf-form when in moonlight. In the more fragile human-form you are still equipped with a crossbow. Both forms are used in every level. Human-Selena may climb ladders and shoot enemies and switches with her crossbow, while wolf-Selena can double-jump and unleash powerful focus (claw) attacks if you refrain from attacking for brief moment.

Unfortunately because of the crossbow you can't play it very well with a keyboard because that restricts aiming crossbow to 45 degree angles - there is regrettably no mouse support in-game though it works in the menu. That's why I opted for gamepad very early on: twin-stick controller comes in handy when moving and aiming at the same time. It's possible to change all the action keys so this was a non-issue, just be aware that gamepad is heavily recommended.

Every level has a bunch of sigils that increase your maximum health and hidden power-ups that make either form permanently stronger: human-form gets stronger and faster crossbow attacks, while wolf-form gets likewise stronger claw and bite attacks. Some power-ups give you new special skills that are essential for getting high scores. Special skills are used with blood power and special arrows, which are sometimes dropped by enemies.

Of the special powers especially the wolf-form's charge attack is useful as it makes you go faster and grants a short invulnerability (that works against insta-killing saws too). To a lesser degree useful is the regeneration, which makes health a trivial matter except in later levels and boss fights. Selena's arrow skills grant multi-shot attacks and insta-killing explosive arrows, both useful in their own situations.

There's a boss fight every two levels, making it five fights in total. I'm guessing that for a platformer novice they would be challenging or even difficult. Actually they are pretty similar to any boss fight in platformers in general, and I found them fairly easy to beat. Each boss has several attack patterns, but usually attacking them is as simple as just shooting straight at them, or in some cases in their eyes. While they look cool, boss fights feel underwhelming in difficulty compared to levels.

That's why levels are where the game really shines. They work well with their given theme (depending on the environment and incoming boss) and contain many challenging venues where you have to move just the right way to make it through alive. Yet there's always a right way onward. As another reviewer put it, "you can only blame yourself if you die because that means you have made a mistake". Fortunately game is pretty generous with check points, usually one is provided once a room or every few tricky jumps.

Though I must admit that technical bugs plagued my prowess sporadically. There was occasional jerkiness and minor frame losses, during which the game would not register input. So, if this happens during a critical jump and I'm not focused enough to keep pressing the jump button to stay in-air, it might be another death. I fortunately learned to cope with this and to survive those sections. Also, curiously the performance statistics would sometimes appear on the screen, covering what's underneath. I was using AMD Radeon R280X card.

The main game levels have lot of secrets to find and to get the highest ranking (S) you have to be really fast. Game is very generous with achievements, giving one for a mere level completion, then for each of the ranks B, A and finally S.

Same is true for Score Rush mode: those are the regular levels but with collectable score gems and it can be a puzzle how to get the highest score category (for achievement) as usually it's not enough to make a perfect run till the end. The time is also of essence, as the game ends if it runs out. Deaths are allowed though, it's just that the time continues from where the previous life ended.

Finally there's Endless mode, which is simply (procedurally generated) level after level of ever-increasing difficulty of death traps with limited lives. To survive 100 rooms you have to use every trick and all the skill you can. Doing so also unlocks the last story movie, which contains an ominous twist and a hint for a potential sequel.

After 28 hours I was done, ~5 hours of which was the initial playthrough of story. For once I feel accomplished when finishing a game: this is what challenge is supposed to feel like! Considering it's a 2 € game that's astonishing! That said, I wouldn't recommend this game for someone novice at gaming or platforming games - the challenge is truly great. So once you're done with Super Meat Boy or They Bleed Pixels or the like, do give Blood of the Werewolf a try.

Anyone who seeks a challenging but rewarding platformer, rejoice, for you have found your game. Blood of the Werewolf is not for the faint of heart, it will test your skills throughout the entire game, and just as you begin to tell yourself "it can't get harder than this", well guess what bucko? It gets harder.

This is not a casual game, it will demand prefection from you often, but if you are up to the challenge the game has a rewarding cycle of tension and release, and the controls are tight enough to make most deaths feel like they were your fault and not some cheap shot the game threw at you. But be warned, the game /will/ give you some cheap deaths and there are sections of the game you will have to memorize to get through. I want to continue to reiterate that this is a game that will demand you get good or get out. If that is not your thing, don't buy. But if you have the spirit of a werewolf in you to perservere, then I wish you luck. It's not an easy journey, but your accomplishments will have weight, and I promise you'll feel like a true badass werewolf by the end of it all.

Now get out there scrub, your baby's counting on you!

Have you ever been a fan of Castlevania and werewolves? If your answer is yes, this game is for you, BUT it's a bit challenging.

Imagine being on a boat that has holes here and there, while there's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ with you on the same damn boat. Can you survive without being ♥♥♥♥♥? Yes, but it'll be hard as hell. Sometimes, this game will leave you in such situations and the checkpoint will be a mile away from such places, so it's can give a bit headache and consume couple of hours. Did i mention that this game can become slow, because, apparently 8 GM RAM, 1.73GHz 7 Core and 1 GB NVIDIA 330M is not enough to run it on high graphics?

After reading my review, you're probably thinking about not giving a chance to this game, right? Well, the choice is yours, but i still like the game, even with these minuses. It was a fun adventure, liked the story and the art of the game, (wish you could transform into werewolf whenever you want) though the future "sequel" movie at the end made me laugh, a lot.

P.S. Selena, after reading my review, please don't hunt me.

My reviews mostly take into consideration the asking retail price. There are many I could give recommendations too but absolutely can not consciously do so because Valve + Devs are charging 5 x's the value I feel the games actually have.

In the instance of Blood of the Werewolf I feel it's a true $6 game.
After taking notice of it selling for only $2 on Steam I can whole-heartedly recommend.

I liked that the developer has placed a lot of secrets in the game and items found in those hubbies are extremely useful upgrades and new abliites. However the only secret tactic used throughout the game is the fake wall gimmick.

There's been a lot of time spent on graphics and the art style is very similar to that used in the old Fox network Batman cartoons from the 90's. The gameplay is interesting enough to want to finish it however what murdered this game down to it's current asking price is that many of the challenges, presented by various areas, incredibley hinder the otherwise smooth progression through the levels.

While some of the traps you need to progress through are clever and involve pattern memorization that can be mastered some are just put it bluntly....incredibley stupid.

For instance your first game-stopper will eventually be on the second or third level when you find your self pitted against a desecending tunnel of slamming wall traps that you need to meticulously guide yourself past while free falling.

Other inane hurdles toss in entire sections of game featuring patience traps seeing you wait for a ceiling gun of sorts to quit spewing before proceeding forward into a medusa-head-like (Castlevania) enemy that knocks you back under it again.

Overall I appreciated the title enough that I would've paid six for it and not felt ripped off. Any more than six and it's a waste of money. You can currently get it for $2 - so grab it.
