Patch 2.2 Notes:

• Gauntlet challengers be glad, for Clients will no longer crash in the loading screen while waiting for the Host to start a floor!
• All Contestants be aware, Liches will no longer be able to pass through closed doors and go beyond the reach of the combatants of the Gauntlet!
• Heroes be advised, the gods have further remedied Camera zooming and tracking problems in the title that are related to various factors, including screen resolution parameters.
• Gauntlet warriors be advised that using Thor’s "Bottomless Jug" ability on Khamun’s Heart will no longer cause a progression blocker by turning it into food.
• Misuse of Portals in ‘Endless’ mode will not be tolerated! All exploits to do with Portal use in Endless have been targeted and eliminated by the gods.
• To all Gauntlet Mages, it is no longer possible to exploit the title by continually staying invisible with Merlin’s ‘Hollow Chapters’ ability. The god’s have weeded out this trickery and have eliminated it for the good of the competition!

Patch 2.1 is Live Now!

Steam Patch 2.1 Notes:

• Attention all Heroes using Radeon Graphics cards with 4K monitors. Your cries have been heard and the gods have answered. All Camera related issues have been addressed and fixed. No more camera lagging during the action!

• All Heroes take heed, Several Steam Achievement descriptions have been updated to reflect the correct parameters of success!

• Let it be known to all, the Achievement "We Need to go Deeper" is no longer missing from the Steam achievements list!

• Gauntlet Champions do not fret, the title will no longer crash when joining or accepting an invite through Steam and will no longer crash when accepting an invite while booting the game up.

• Cheating Heroes beware, Exploits within ‘Endless’ mode that make ones Gauntlet Campaign progress easier have been discovered and eliminated by the gods. The Challenge of the Gauntlet shall be equally trying for all!!

• All ‘Endless’ floors past 18 that are populated with the ‘Cultist’ enemies will now have purchasable items available for weary Heroes in need of a boost.

Morak has called forth all Gauntlet adventurers to his newest and deadliest creation: The Gauntlet Coliseum.

Six horde-mode style arenas will test players’ endurance and combat skills against increasingly more difficult waves of enemies in this brand new game update. Victors will receive a new cosmetic item for their efforts, capes custom-designed for all characters, as well as bragging rights on the leaderboards.

All Gauntlet adventurers, regardless if they purchase the Lilith the Necromancer Pack DLC, will receive this game update for free on Dec. 11th. Additional challenges will be added in future seasons of The Gauntlet Coliseum to be released on a semi-regular basis.

G:'14 = Gauntlet 2014
G:SE = Slayer Edition

Gauntlet wasn't among the dizzying background noises in the arcades I was frequenting in the early 90's. I eventually found an arcade that had all the cabinets and I fell in love with the idea of the games. The archetypal class quartet. Randomized labyrinths. Monster Spawners. Keys, traps, and treasure. It's such a brilliant combination that makes for an excellent dungeon-crawler.

Arrowhead was undoubtedly thrilled to apply their mantra to their childhood franchise by quickening the series with a deeper, tactical reboot. They indeed elaborated on the action, but did they make a winning formula and is this truly Gauntlet? I'll add that this Gauntlet is as much an arcade game as the first and the hack n' slash gameplay is the best you'll find in the genre.

If your perspective on nostalgia consists of 4 buddies coming together as Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard, Elf, and challenging the Gauntlet, you're in for a real treat. Arrowhead's expansion to them is very worthy and each possesses nostalgic nods to their original concept. Merlin's spells are an absolute joy to wield and though the others have less to work with, they play dynamically and there is a subtle elegance to them. All are solid and all depend on player skill and improvisation. Suffice it to say, there are no predetermined roles in Gauntlet. If there are roles, they are 'Tower Razer', 'Horde Slayer', or 'Executioner'. As far as fluff is concerned, each class has a small selection of aesthetics to be purchased.

Thor - the Warrior
Thor became a confident, unyielding brute and aside from one weapon set, has nothing but all-rounded, close-range attacks. This deceptively makes him appear straight-forward, however, he cannot be played casually. This is due, in part, to the clumsy demeanor of his attacks. Fortunately, he has the greatest vitality, possessing the highest health pool and the most invincibility states.

Thyra - the Valkyrie
Thyra became a stoic, battle-hardened shieldmaiden of death. Like Thor, Thyra cannot be played casually, however, she possesses keener attacks--owed to her valkyrian discipline--that allow her to hastily fell the machinations of the Gauntlet. Her shield can ward any attack and it allows her to take defensive postures or guard allies. She, most of all, requires precision. Anything less will leave her open to counter-attack.

Merlin - the Wizard
Merlin became a wise yet patronizing, mythical grandmaster of magic and is unabashedly the reason I bought Gauntlet, being fit with a miniaturized version of the wizardry from Magicka. He has nine spells in total, and together, they give him immense power through versatility. This factor easily and expressly makes Merlin the greatest of the four (Arrowhead loves wizards!). Although he is undoubtedly the greatest of the four (five, if you count Necro), presence of mind is required to unleash his phenominal, pseudo-cosmic power.

Questor - the Elf
Questor became an absurd yet graceful arcane bowman. He is straightforward, stylish, and by far the easiest class to play, due to his ranged capabilities, subtle magic, and manueverability. Fans of fantasy archer archetypes will definitely appreciate what he brings to the table and he plays how an elven, veritable, twin-stick archer should.

Forget everything you knew about G:'14 because the gameplay and monsters have been heavily revised. Most importantly, the heroes were further elaborated upon, particularly the melee classes. Relics--magic items which perform various offensive/defensive/supportive effects--are changed from their original, spammy, imbalanced implementation, to something more consequential, but perhaps, just as abusable.

Talismans & Relics
Rather than consume potions, Relics are tagged with a relevant cooldown and only one may be equipped. Talismans are the new equippables, taking the role of effectual potion magic (and the first Relic slot). Tailored to each class, they allow for a totally awesome, welcome expansion to the heroes' personalities. What's more is each class has a modest selection. For instance, Elf's Ultimate Arrow fires a powerful, pervading missile, the Enchanted Willow Branch summons three damaging spheres which orbit him, and Dryad's Song plays a magic melody that heals allies and placates enemies.

Overall, these items are hit or miss. Inquire about them in the community and choose wisely.

Weapon Selection
Weapon sets now grant each class unique abilities, such as Merlin's Eldritch Sphere which replaces a school with unique lightning magic, or Valkyrie's Freedom Protector which replaces Shield Toss with Intercept--a swift, rushing shield bash. Some aren't as obvious in their use, while some are in dire need of Arrowhead lovin' to make them more viable. Overall, this change is mind-blowing and I guarantee you'll find some combination of Talisman, Relic, and weapon that thrills you.

The Bestiary
If you're familiar with the original games, you'll recognize at least a few of the throwbacks. G:SE's iteration of the monster roster has bestowed very welcome refinements, particularly to the tougher variety. You may find yourself being under constant threat from the Orc Berserker once they lose their temper, being charged by a Skeleton Defender once you demolish their shield, or dodgeing projectile barrages from Grunt Shamans. There are also some new enemies, such as the enchanted skeleton archer, tougher spiders, and a Temple miniboss. Arrowhead has lain a much tastier variety of monsters to slay but quite a few of the enemies were gutted and a few of the revisions are simply unpalatable (see: suicide cultists). Almost the entire roster lacks appropriate aggressiveness and movement speed in G:SE's highest difficulty (discounting Endless). Also, a very frustrating oversight causes enemies to hit you when they shouldn't or to have excessive reach. If you relax for even a moment on Hard, this issue will be there to punish you.

Campaign & Colosseum
The delightful hub from G:'14 was removed in favor of an artsy but practical map screen. I'm going to miss the ol' hub, but having control over the exact level you play is very convenient and the unwanted interruption to the flow, known as "run" levels, can be skipped (thank Gaia). Campaign offers a good experience for new players and as a side venture. Sadly, by virtue of its difficulty alone, you'll find it unsatisfying if you're an expert. The Colosseum (a modest arena challenge mode) makes a return and is now on a rotating schedule. One original Colosseum map is chosen at random, per day, with a random Summoning Stone affix. Defeating the challenge earns you that day's bonus and a cape, if you hadn't previously earned it.

The heart of G:SE. Arrowhead has smartly answered the thunderous cries for a worthy procedural mode! Not worthy of the classic games, mind you, because there is a distinct lack of elegant labyrinths in which to wander. Nonetheless, Endless is a welcome addition. Floors consist of the highly linear "run" levels from G:'14, reconstructed to fit the new design. Unfortunately, Endless is currently plagued by some major issues, the greatest of which is the curves that are thrown at you. Sometimes you'll mosey through a pointless, short, barren level, while other times you'll be treated to the Mini-Battle of Endor. Still, Endless provides a pristine experience despite its wild difficulty, limited variety, and hacked-together presentation and has all the challenge you could ask for.

Despite the lack of procedural labyrinths and its many other failings, this is definitely Gauntlet and it boasts superb coop and gameplay. Be aware that the combat is 95% of the game. If you can live with all that, take up the Gauntlet and invade the darkness!

The Gauntlet coin-op from '85 holds some fond memories for me and any modern conversion was going to have to stand up to a rigourous critique. I'm so happy to say that the team behind this version has done a sterling job. This is the best hack-and-slash dungeon crawler that I know of.

The five characters (one character is in purchaseable DLC) have just enough different moves, which are fun in their executions to keep the game from feeling mundane. Each character that you play with does make you feel like the hero! You get the chance to demolish large hordes of monsters, which either clear the way or save your team mates from taking hits (or dying!).

The co-op is fantastic. As is mostly the case, the more the merrier. Currently finding online players is no problem, there seems to be a healthy playerbase at the moment. Let's hope it holds for the future.

The graphics artists have done a good job on the in game graphics. The characters on the select screen look a bit blocky, but doesn't effect anything important!

You can alter the abilities of your character by collecting gold in the game, speed ups, different special moves, magic, etc.

The devs implemented quite a big update recently which frustrated some of the community, this is the reason for such a large number of unwarranted negative reviews. Sadly with patches that change many things in a game, some will see it as progress and some will feel alienated. My advice if you like dungeon crawlers, don't be deterred by these opinions, you will be missing out!

The"Slayer Edition" update helped alot in making the game less monotonous... well... to a certain degree. Each character has a few weapon sets they can choose from that changes up the way you play a fair amount... the fact the game throws more enemies .. and removes the need to use potions for relics and just puts them on a cooldown is a blessing. The endless dungeon is a nice addition as well.. delving deeper and deeper each time to see how far you can get... honestly not a mode for everyone but at least its there. In this update they also added in a few "super" moves that uses potions instead that spices up the combat just a bit more.

This update did bring some needed changes the game was missing.. but at times still feels a little bare, fifteen dollars isnt too much for a few hours of fun and i enjoyed my time with it at least.

+ A good graphical upgrade/re-creation of the original Gauntlet, with unique designs and animations for each character, as well as voice-acting for each of them
+ The integration of 4 player co-op makes the journey through the game much more entertaining; distinctive playable roles allow players to tailor to their own playstyles and give the game some variety in the gameplay department.


- The hack-and-slash gameplay becomes extremely repetitive, very quickly; even more so with the re-used level design. With a poor upgrade/shop system (both relics and passive bonuses require excessive grinding and offer negligible improvements to your character for the most part), the gameplay can be difficult to stomach the further you progress
- The fixed camera and limited perspective make losing your character on-screen (mainly in co-op) and getting hit at the edge of the screen when you can’t see an enemy a more frequent occurrence than they should be. Having to effectively remove the HUD in order to see your character at the bottom of the screen should not be a prerequisite
- With a 5 ½ hour campaign (Hard difficulty in co-op) encompassing 12 short chapters, combined with little to no story at all, and topped off with unimaginative boss fights... there is zero replayability here outside of a forgettable arena mode.
