Fuse's biggest update yet is rolling out, and it is some next-level stuff:

New in v1.1!:

  • Face and Body customization! Customize your character with over 280 possible adjustment shapes. You can click and drag on UI controllers or use old-school sliders in a new workspace, "Customize", up to you!
  • Face and Body customization for imported characters! Yup! If you import a character that is based on the Fuse template or has matching UVs, those 280 customization shapes will be generated automatically!
  • Now you can search your content library!
  • Better scaling options! Old scaling sucked! We're sorry about that! It's way better now!
  • Texture packing options to reduce the total maps created on export and output a 2k or 4k map!
  • Instant color picker! Now selecting colors gives instant feedback on the character!
  • Add a full set of matching body parts with a new right-click menu, or shift+click!
  • 30 New pieces of content, including Fantasy items, alpha mustaches, and beards

Fuse was developed in collaboration between Mixamo and Vladlen Koltun’s research group at Stanford University, with Siddhartha Chaudhuri as chief architect and programmer. With the last beta release, Fuse integrates Allegorithmic’s Substance technology for a complete character modeling solution. Fuse offers an unprecedented approach to high quality 3D character creation. Users can browse through a vast number of mesh and texture choices to get custom built characters in a matter of minutes.

I'm sorry, but as a game artist, these models are aweful. They start off with body parts that are often not to scale and even after tweaking the scale where, say, the legs and arms fit the body and head size, the overall structure of the legs and/or arms is off in scale. They aren't anatomically correct. The saving grace is if you plan to cover them up with clothes, but they barely give you anything you can work with, aside from some generic pieces and the go so far as to charge you $19 to get more generic clothing. Waste of money and waste of time. If you have nothing else to lean on, this might work, but even the exported models don't look right without a bit of work in other apps. Avoid this one and just go for the free (and better) alternative of using MakeHuman.

I can honestly still say stay away from this. Makehuman just came out with a finalized version that is not only free, but does what this is supposed to do. Don't waste your money on this.

デモを動かして、製品版はよほどすごいのだろうとおもったけれどそうでもなかった。
権利関係がフリーとは書いてあるけれどTF2の素材だけは話が別で、素材がいっぱいあると書かれているのにTF2の素材を使うわけにもいかないのがまた頭の痛い話だ。
無造作にパーツごとでのみカテゴライズされているのでせめてタグ分類をしてほしいところ、男性も女性もゾンビもTF2も全部同じカテゴリにぶちまけられているのは問題だと思う。
帽子をかぶらないと本当に個性がない状態なのに、髪型によっては帽子からはみ出してしまう有り様だ。
またモーション作成機能はなく、mixamoへのアップロードが前提になってる設計でFuseから直接fbx形式でファイル出力もできない。
人間モデル30人分くらいのアセットを買い揃えるよりずっと効率的かとおもったけどそんなことは全然なかった、現時点ではアニメーションつきのunityアセットを別途で購入したほうが良い。
autorigは便利だけど、本当にそれしか価値がない・・・、fuseで作成したデーター自体は無個性なモブくらいしか作れないので自作のデーターにボーンを入れるのに使ったら便利なのかもしれない、制限はあるけど。
FUSEを設計してる人はEVE Onlineやセインツロウ等のキャラクターエディットでも参考にすると良いと思った、そうでなくともアクセサリーやタトゥー等カスタマイズ項目も増やしたほうがいいし、素材が全然たりないし、TF2素材はマジで要らない。
現時点ではこの値段設定は正直いってまだ高い、fuseそのものは定価$20くらいが妥当なのでは?

Unity Asset StoreでFuseが販売されて、あーあ買っちゃう人かわいそうにと思った私が見たのは
Fuseでモデル自体を細かく編集している画面だったのだ、とうとう週1でもらえるAutorigの権利もどうでもよくなって放置していたこのツールだが、こうなってくると話は別だ。
FUSEは見捨てられたツールではなかった、まだ戦えるはずだともう一度私はそう確信した。

This seems to be Fuse Basic... and the Maximo side of things is way too expensive. I wanted to buy an Action Animation Pack, and it was close to the price of purchasing the full royalty free versions of Daz3D (which has a $100 game character export plugin for sale).

I am a bit disappointed with this new business model... that charges you for software, and then essentially charges you to continue using it.

Extremely disappointed purchase. In fact you get the opportunity to create a very primitive model of several parts. The number of parts is very limited. You cann't be using some form of motion, or even be change the pose. Button animation actually does not allow to change the character posture, and sends you to a website where you can buy some animation.
For example walking,+ jumping,+ turning cost you 350 dollars. I'm not kidding, more than three hundred dollars for simple movements!
Many games such as MMOs, give you much more room for customization of a character at a much lower price.

UPDATE: The Fuse team are to be commended for listening to and addressing the criticism and issues which users have had with their product - the latest update addresses one of the biggest problems I've had with Fuse...

I can now alter the parameters of the base models to correct the proportions and distortions. This could be a game changer. It's still a shame that the base models aren't better but at least they are now usable thanks to being fully adjustable.

I'll spend the next couple of weeks testing fuse in my character creation workflow (swapping out DAZ3D). Then I'll decide if I can recommend this product to others.

Fuse.

I could forgive the lack of features.
I would forgive the shortage of variation.
I should even forgive the way that the pointless TF2 content gets in the way of what little other content there is.

I won't, however, forgive the fact that the base models are not properly proportioned, or that it's not possible to scale them to the correct proportions (properly, in detail, not using centred scaling on the elbow).

I won't work with the torso of a human when it's only possible to attach the arms of a gibbon with the hands of Andre the Giant glued on the end of them. These base meshes are seriously poor quality and render the software practically useless far beyond its lack of features.

I thought Fuse could/should/would speed up my character creation workflow in conjunction with the fast Mixamo rigger and the excellent, fit for purpose, Manga Studio 5. It can't.

As for the exported texture quality... think about crayons and a low res scanner.

For me, at least, it was a tax deductible purchase and I didn't pay full price.

If this is a work in progress then it should be clearly marked as 'early access'. I won't be using Fuse again unless the default models are brought up to scratch.
