What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“World of Diving is first launched on Steam as an Early Access game, and we're sometimes asked for our reasons. It's simple: We are not making this game for just us (although it sometimes feels that way!) but for you, our community. By involving you in the development process from early on, we hope to bring you the game that you won't be able to put down. Also: bugs. ;)”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“At the moment, we're not quite sure as to how long we will keep World of Diving in Early Access. A lot depends on your feedback and the wishes of the community. There is no official release date yet.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Upon launch, the full game will have more features, more content, hopefully a boasting community full of happy players to meet in-game, and lots and lots of awesome user-generated content... and - bare with us ;) - less bugs than the Early Access version. Some concrete examples are the ability to invite your friends in multiplayer, salvaging, improved player progression, and animal companions.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current state of the Early Access version is pre-alpha. As mentioned above, we're still implementing some cool features for you guys and even better - you can help decide which features are introduced first through community polls.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, for sure. We're more than happy to reward you if you're willing to accept our bugs! You'll save some money, as the full game at launch will be a little more expensive. Details to follow soon.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“You'll have a vote on our upcoming feature development through community polls and by participating in our lively, resourceful forums.

To see our current production schedule in real time here.”

WoD UPDATE v0.17.5

The new WoD version is live. There have been a lot of changes (and a lot of time..) since the previous version.
We have made some really big improvements performance wise. All levels are now running at a solid 90fps on an Oculus mininum spec PC in VR mode.
For this, almost all art has seen a complete overhaul which you will be able to see once we put the new build live today.

Additionally, the following major changes can be found in this update:
- A complete re-do of fish rendering
- Fish AI improvements
- Tablet for most interface interaction
- Story-mode which guides you through the game
- HTC Vive & Oculus CV1 support
- New fish density setting

You can find more information about the changes in the devblog below.
Let us know what you think!

Development blog 67

Johann

Overhaul of the entire game, and stuff...

It's been about 3 months since our last Development Blog. There's been a lot of developer activity on World of Diving in that time.

First of all; we've made some really big improvements on the performance side. All levels are now running at a solid 90fps on an Oculus minimum spec PC in VR mode. For this, almost all art has seen a complete overhaul which you will be able to see once we put the new build live today. We have also added HTC Vive support.

Personally, I've been doing lots of work on getting everything working again since so many systems have been changed to provide a smoother experience in VR. Next to the systems that have been changed, a lot of systems have also been added:
- A complete re-do of fish rendering. Small fish now all have trailing so their turing is smooth instead of jerky, as it was. Also, a lot of changes have been made to the AI so the fish appear more natural. The improvements for the bigger fish in the game will come soon.- A story has been integrated into the game. Instead of only the first tutorial mission being in the game, the game now guides the player through the game.
- A tablet has been added which now features a lot of the interfaces in the game which did not really have a good place.

Of course we're really excited to have you play this new version of World of Diving, and are eager to hear your thoughts about it.

Trevor

In a World of Diving

Over the course of the last couple of weeks I have been working on the finalization of features and bug fixes in order to get the game in a proper playable state.Tasks include the implementation of existing UI in the tablet, and the implementation of the redesign of most of these UI's. For this I have been working closely with Bjorn.

There were some interesting challenges with the implementation of the new UI on the tablet. For example, we display some 3D objects in certain interfaces, such as the Oceanopedia and the new mission view. If we were to display these on the tablet, they would appear pierced by the tablet's screen. I have worked on a few solutions to this problem and we finally ended up with creating custom meshes for the screen in the case there are 3D objects displayed on the tablet. Additionally I worked on the blur script which we apply on the screen to blur everything behind it.

I'm glad we have been able to work on the game as a team again during the last period. This has been very pleasant and inspirational for all of us and we are finally able to deliver more of the game we had envisioned to make.

An artist's journal

Hi there!

In the past couple of weeks I have been working on the user interface of world of diving. I started out creating a Tablet for use in game to show all the menus, For this I used a concept from our concept artist Bang. Right after that I have been working on a completely new User Interface together with Trevor, one of our programmers. At first I drew some blockouts to get the ideas out of my head and on the paper. After that, I built the new interface while Trevor built it up in engine. We also did a lot of testing in-game to make sure the interface works on multiple platforms and controllers. I really like how the interface turned out and I hope you will enjoy it as well! Below I have collected some screenshots from the new items I made. I hope you enjoy!

During my last crunch in World of Diving I have been busy with optimization of art, making sure the performance remains steady on 90 fps. This means setting up Levels of detail for models, culling distance, combining textures and efficiently use the amount of polygons where they matter most.

Something else I have done is placing mission items through the levels; Collectibles; Ocean garbage; mission markers.

In between tasks I have spent a few hours on setting up a block-out of the community shipwreck level that is going to be released in a future update.

Hello guys,

So I’ve been working on optimizing the levels to get them to 90 fps. I’ve done this by combining rocks with each other and make LOD’s for them. The meaning of LOD is (level of detail). We work with lod models, because, if you see a model in the distance, you don't want it to have 10.000 vertices. You want it to have 2000 vertices. The closer you get the more vertices you can see. This is how the LOD system works. I also made a lot of LOD’s for the 3d models in the level. I added more fish for the people that have a good PC so they can play in high mode and see more fish. I’ve also been adding new mission markers, instead of the air tanks it became a starfish. We’ve been providing the levels with garbage, for clean the ocean mission, and we’ve been placing the collectibles.

Greetings Yorick

At first you might find this game to be fun because of the graphics and objects. But after about 10 minutes, you would probably start getting bored and request a refund (thats wat i did) because no weapons or predators and all you need to do is swim around the ocean taking pictures....

i guess if i was jacques couteau i would love this game. it made me sick playing this game and thats a had thing to do. the game ran terrible when i had the fish density turned up. which the game looked better , cause when you turn it to low the ocean looks like a desert. i wish i could write more but they're no words left.. unless you're into ocean photography you can skip this vr experience

This is a great little game! I don’t know whether there has been an update prior to my purchase as I have not experienced the problems other users have. The only slight glitch I have had is that I camera wobbles from time to time but it quickly goes and this has not impacted my ability to play it.

I have only played the single player game so far but from what I have played so far I have really enjoyed! Maybe it’s because I am a diver myself but I have found the attention to detail excellent! Everything about the ‘gear’ is spot on and even the posters on the beach shop have the phase ‘plan the dive, dive the plan’ which are indeed one of the golden rules of diving.

This is a slow but relaxing game; you are swimming around looking at fish, collecting treasure and getting rid of rubbish and I have found it a calming game. I just hope the negative comments don’t put of the developers to keep expanding the ‘world of diving’!!!

Disclamer: I recieved this product for free

(I am reviewing my VIVE expierence, I used full room VR)
I freaking love this game, it's really pretty and relaxing to just swim around and hangout! my first time entering the ocean I was scared as heck, because I guess I have a phobia or somthing of vast emptyness, but once I got the curage to finally go out into the ocean I had a blast
I was just swimming and snapping pic of fishies and ETC. my only gripe about the game is the "quest" and the unlocking. Th e quest are kinda boring and dont really have any need, and to unlock new levels you have to do quest, but I soldiered on to unlock the next area, and boy oh boy is it pretty. I freaking love this game even if it is kinda terrifying.

I've played this game for a good amount of time and i must say the following:

Alot of bad reviews that got on top, things i do and don't agree with.
Most of these reviews were placed earlier this month/year and alot had changed since then!

All with all i'd like to say that the game has changed a lot in a good way.
the game let's you play in a relaxed beautifully crafted atmosphere with many fish and surroundings to explore in nice graphics!

I do agree the game may seem to stay in early acces as it is, since the devs are busy on another game that needs their attention more for the time being, but i personally like the game as it is for vive aswell as 2D, especially for the price it costs.

Ofcourse the game got it's pro's and cons wich i won't really have to go over since other reviews all get close to what i experienced in the game itself so theres no real reason to, but i have to say that the company did a great job overall!

If you like relaxing games that don't have or accuire action in them, i really recommend this game, especcialy if you have a vive, Go get it!

This game is just what i thought i was getting, diving in an really nice see with all kinds of fish.
The surroundings are nicely made and i think this is going to be one of the "games" I'm going to show to my family that isn't font of super high action games.
The movement is something that needs you go get used to, I often need to make a quick sidestep not to fall.
My wife cant play it for to long, she is getting dizzy of this mechanic (not sick!)

There is a nice way to gain points and progress in the game, that makes you visit a spot for multiple reasons. I like that!
All in all, i'd recommend this game if you are looking for some nice looking game to calm yourselves.

I use a Vive, so this is a Vive Review

Pros:
- One of the more complete games on the Vive
- Nice diving sim
- People thought Dev wasn't updating, but they actually are. They just were taking longer for a larger update.
- Headset not as heavy as actual diving gear, and conditions are always nice.
- For added realism, I suggest laying on your stomach as you play.

Cons:
- Customized character through character generator, yet still I don't have a body in Vive. Tired of Vive games not letting you have a body. Gamepad interface gets bodies, motion interface doesn't seem to. Dissappointed DEVS, PLEASE LET VIVE PLAYERS HAVE BODIES TOO!!!
- I was not eaten by a shark.
- Underwater filling tanks is a bit unrealistic. May kill off players irl if they don't have a habit of checking their remaining tank pressure and NDL time and go diving for real.

Another fine example of the faults of Early Access. This used to get regular updates, but after the devs updated to Unity 5, and ran into some snags, it seems they are now more interesting on working on a new VR game than actually finishing this one. I recommend that you avoid this game for the time being.

I got this on Humble Bundle for about 5 bucks, I'm not sure it was worth that. I'll admit that i only played for about 20 minutes, but what i saw in that time just left me unenthused. There's potential here, if they actually add the content behind all the placeholders and work on turning the graphics up to 11. Until then, I'll be quite happy picking up quartz off the bottom of an alien ocean...

Guys, Check this out!
World of Diving has finally been given the biggest and best update yet.

Just when I thought it had died a slow death, I saw the update and it now not only plays great in 2d and Oculus/Vive VR support (except for the lack of straffing) but the art style has been given a make over WOW, serious guys this is back to the game I loved at last.

New levels too, ignore the bad reviews they were before this complete overhaul and give it a second chance.

Well done and onwards and upwards!!!!!
