A brutal mix of handball and ice hockey placed at break-neck pace. Now Tower Studios, Vivid Games and The Bitmap Brothers have created a glorious fusion of classic gameplay and modern technology to launch this game into the 21st century.

Got this game for free, wasn't expecting much from it, but I gave it a try and was surprised at how fun the game is. It's simple to get into, it's like a Football (American) and Soccer hybrid. The matches are pretty quick, so you can fire up the game and play a match if you have 10 mins to kill.

EDIT
So i just won my first cup and started a new season. The opponent is wiping the floor with me, all my players are way underleveled and are going up against opponents with almost full power and tackle, so i can barely hold on to the ball 2 secs before being clobbered. Grrr

Duh! duh! aaaa! puff! puff! duh... ICE CREAM, ICE CREAM!

Pros:
Decent remake with graphics done properly - 2D became 2D but in high resolution, not ugly low-poly 3D, which is common problem for many remakes.
If you played original game then you'll be right at home!

Cons:
Where's the online multiplayer, guys?

never play the original games, so i cant compare them, and i got this game for free tho.
first time i open the game, i was surprised there is no turtorial or training section, this is not an ordinary sports like soccer or football that anyone knows the basic.
so i select the quick match and decide to see how it plays.
the controls are simple, you only need one button and 4 direction button when playing a match.
press action button for short pass and hold action button for lob pass, anyway the shoot button and pass button are same, so its pretty hard to score at the first time, but then you will realize that you can kick the goalkeeper ♥♥♥, so you can score easily. and the pass are pretty hard when you first time playing it.
the ai are too easy, you can score easily.
there are some way to make some score. first, shoot the ball to the goal, just like soccer. second, bounce the ball to the "pinball like" thing and stars. the last one, you just need to knockout your enemy, it gives you plenty of score.
the graphic are okay, but the animation is funny (in a bad way)
the music and sound are good, nothing bad in here. oh and that "ice cream" sound is funny (in a good way, of course)
the major problem in this game are there is no online multiplayer, i think online multiplayer would be great in this game.

afterall, this game is great, its worth to play
but it is worth $9.99? nope, if they add some online multiplayer mode, buy it at a full price, if they dont, just grab some free copy like me or wait for discount
(sorry for my bad english)

Games like Speedball 2 should be based around multiplayer in my honest opinion. Fact that Multiplayer for this game is local only takes a lot from it because Ai is not particulary strong. Not playing old Speedball I have no nostalgic memories to influence my review. I think that MP with things like online tournaments, ladders, seasons and decent matchmaking would make this no brainer for most players. I was just not having fun playing vs ai teams. Up to that lack of mini map with random switching of your players is not quite well made and you are often forced to just move in dirrection of opponent with someone outside of map.

To be honest I wouldnt hesitate to recommend this game with online multiplayer but at it is I would recommend it only for old fans of franchise or people who liked old NHL 96 because this game resembled it a lot with the way it was played.

This games is not exciting at all. Unpredictable character movements, dumb physics, uncontrollable characters. Sum: annoying gameplay. If you can get this game for free, then you can run it to get a few trading cards. Otherwise this game is totally worthless.

This Game is so horrible, I would rather jump off of a 100 ft Cliff into a Lego Factory, swim in the molten plastic, jump into a pit of broken glass and lose my testicles then play this game any longer.

I changed the resoloution to 1080p and my TV started making a crazy high pitched static noise. I turned it off and back on then it was running normal again... I personally like top down sports games, but there was no tutorial, I only learnt from seeing what the bots did. There's some weird circle in the middle you can get 2 points from hitting, and you can get a ton of points from scorring a regular goal. There's some sort ofpower up that the bot used, it knocked out all my players.... my players can't seem to pass a certain part of the feild... Anyways the bot got 5 goals and then I raged on out.

I wish there were a "depends" recommendation option for this.

For people familiar with the Amiga classic, yes I reccomend this - for nostalgia if little else. It's billed as a HD version of the original. It's not. It's a copy of the original, but not a totally faithful copy. The feel is fairly different, including but not limited to:
  • In the original you were limited to 8 directions for throwing the ball. Speedball 2 HD has some kind of auto-aiming which I think is worse because it is requires less skill.
  • Substitutes never seem to run out (you had 2 in the original and after that you had less players)
  • The AI is worse - it practically ignores the scoring multiplier and the stars (AI is a lost art form in modern gaming)
There are other things that can be annoying. Player auto selection can be infuriating and unpredictable. It is also buggy - sometimes the highlighted player isn't the one that moves - and not as responsive as the original. Then there's the bugs with achievements and cups (hint: never exit the game immediately after winning the league or champion's league) and the fact this game feels more like a grind to get the best players than the original where I felt a bit of skill could work against far superior teams.

It's OK. It's not a classic like the original. Despite being a very similar game with HD graphics, it seems to be missing the soul of the original game and they've made changes based on making the game easier when easier isn't always better. If there were a bugfix release with a few improvements, I'd change the recommendation to a Yes. It's just too flawed for the moment.

Unfortunately the HD graphics vesion has lost all the charm of Bitmap Brothers' signature palette.
Still worth a while, but I'd rather play the Amiga version.

This game is Just so hard to control and the AIs are too hard to beat
Speedball is a great game but not this time. If you want to play GOOD Speedball go to the internet and play it as online game it is better than this.

As a grumpy old swine this game took me back to inserting a 3.5" disk into my Commodore Amiga and reliving some of the joy it bought me back then.

It's a proper remastered HD game too not some blocky textured mess designed to con people like me into a nostalgia trip.

It's fast, simple and still fun and a very good take on the original (go download a Genesis/Megadrive emulator and get that too) the AI of the higher rated teams can be a bit brutal but after a bit of perseverance and swearing profusely at it you shouldn't have many problems.
