I wish there were a "depends" recommendation option for this.

For people familiar with the Amiga classic, yes I reccomend this - for nostalgia if little else. It's billed as a HD version of the original. It's not. It's a copy of the original, but not a totally faithful copy. The feel is fairly different, including but not limited to:
  • In the original you were limited to 8 directions for throwing the ball. Speedball 2 HD has some kind of auto-aiming which I think is worse because it is requires less skill.
  • Substitutes never seem to run out (you had 2 in the original and after that you had less players)
  • The AI is worse - it practically ignores the scoring multiplier and the stars (AI is a lost art form in modern gaming)
There are other things that can be annoying. Player auto selection can be infuriating and unpredictable. It is also buggy - sometimes the highlighted player isn't the one that moves - and not as responsive as the original. Then there's the bugs with achievements and cups (hint: never exit the game immediately after winning the league or champion's league) and the fact this game feels more like a grind to get the best players than the original where I felt a bit of skill could work against far superior teams.

It's OK. It's not a classic like the original. Despite being a very similar game with HD graphics, it seems to be missing the soul of the original game and they've made changes based on making the game easier when easier isn't always better. If there were a bugfix release with a few improvements, I'd change the recommendation to a Yes. It's just too flawed for the moment.

Got this as part of a Humble Bundle, and it was the sole reason I bought it.

Well, needless to say it's a complete mess. After playing through the tutorial (which is hidden in the options menu, by the way), I got the jist of the scoring system. While constantly trying to put my newfound training to use, I quickly realized that running diagonaly makes the player or AI carrying the ball virtually invincible to most tackles. The AI on the player side seems to know nothing about offense or defense and bumbleclucks its way around the arena while the AI throws the ball at bumpers, stars, and somehow teleports the ball around the arena at unpredictable intervals. (And at one time, right into my goal. Hooray for cheating!)

The power-ups system is nice, except for the part where it's practically useless. I can run faster... Until I get sacked 2 seconds later by a tackle spanning about 10 feet. There also seems to be a complete lack explanation as to what in the apple sauce they do. A purple negative sign? Armor on the ground? A can of... Something with an S on it?

This game had a lot of promise - and I'm sure 23 or so years ago the original was fantastic - but this one isn't.

I bought this because it is a game whose Amiga version I loved and played so much.

It is a game that shouts for an online mode, which it doesn't have.

The Solo Career mode is far too easy and when a bug deleted all my team going into the seventh season, I decided to quit it for good. I already wasted my money. I'm not doing the same with my time.

Got this game for free, wasn't expecting much from it, but I gave it a try and was surprised at how fun the game is. It's simple to get into, it's like a Football (American) and Soccer hybrid. The matches are pretty quick, so you can fire up the game and play a match if you have 10 mins to kill.

EDIT
So i just won my first cup and started a new season. The opponent is wiping the floor with me, all my players are way underleveled and are going up against opponents with almost full power and tackle, so i can barely hold on to the ball 2 secs before being clobbered. Grrr

HORRIBLE.

I was a huge fan of the series, I had my amiga 500 and the 2 original floppies of this wonderful game.

What remains of the original game in this lousy remake?

The sound effects, nothing else. All the rest is ♥♥♥♥ed up. The game feel, gameplay, atmosphere and even some cutscenes (like the violent images of bleeding team mates when you knock out enemy players or the team cheering after winning a game) are gone.

Don't buy this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hoping to find a remake of the original game with a better graphic (which anyways looks childish and ridiculous)

Just check the other reviews, most of the people who recommends this crap is either new players which have no idea of what this game comes from or completely braindead people.

Don't buy it.

I played the Amiga version and loved it. Read the reviews and bought it irrespective of the negative comments.

Thank goodness I did that because I love it. It's a faithful representation of the original gameplay and a blast to play! I use a wired 360 controller and find it to be amazingly similar to the original I so loved when I was a kid. Definitely fun to play and if you're into nostalgia, you'll love it. Believe the hype, Speedball 2 HD is great!

I was expecting this to be the 2007 Xbox version of the game, but no, this is a new version that sticks closer to the original. As a fan of the Amiga game, I was a little put off by the cartoony new look at first — it would be nice if there were an option to use the original graphics. But, thankfully, it still plays like Speedball 2, and you'll see why this is still such a classic game. I enjoyed the new ability to change up offensive/defensive formations on the fly (but I'm not sure about some of the new power-ups). Ice cream! Ice cream!

Games like Speedball 2 should be based around multiplayer in my honest opinion. Fact that Multiplayer for this game is local only takes a lot from it because Ai is not particulary strong. Not playing old Speedball I have no nostalgic memories to influence my review. I think that MP with things like online tournaments, ladders, seasons and decent matchmaking would make this no brainer for most players. I was just not having fun playing vs ai teams. Up to that lack of mini map with random switching of your players is not quite well made and you are often forced to just move in dirrection of opponent with someone outside of map.

To be honest I wouldnt hesitate to recommend this game with online multiplayer but at it is I would recommend it only for old fans of franchise or people who liked old NHL 96 because this game resembled it a lot with the way it was played.

never play the original games, so i cant compare them, and i got this game for free tho.
first time i open the game, i was surprised there is no turtorial or training section, this is not an ordinary sports like soccer or football that anyone knows the basic.
so i select the quick match and decide to see how it plays.
the controls are simple, you only need one button and 4 direction button when playing a match.
press action button for short pass and hold action button for lob pass, anyway the shoot button and pass button are same, so its pretty hard to score at the first time, but then you will realize that you can kick the goalkeeper ♥♥♥, so you can score easily. and the pass are pretty hard when you first time playing it.
the ai are too easy, you can score easily.
there are some way to make some score. first, shoot the ball to the goal, just like soccer. second, bounce the ball to the "pinball like" thing and stars. the last one, you just need to knockout your enemy, it gives you plenty of score.
the graphic are okay, but the animation is funny (in a bad way)
the music and sound are good, nothing bad in here. oh and that "ice cream" sound is funny (in a good way, of course)
the major problem in this game are there is no online multiplayer, i think online multiplayer would be great in this game.

afterall, this game is great, its worth to play
but it is worth $9.99? nope, if they add some online multiplayer mode, buy it at a full price, if they dont, just grab some free copy like me or wait for discount
(sorry for my bad english)

Duh! duh! aaaa! puff! puff! duh... ICE CREAM, ICE CREAM!

Pros:
Decent remake with graphics done properly - 2D became 2D but in high resolution, not ugly low-poly 3D, which is common problem for many remakes.
If you played original game then you'll be right at home!

Cons:
Where's the online multiplayer, guys?

I insert a positive review just because i loved, many years ago, the original Speedball 2, this version is a little worst but still good enough to give you some pretty fun playing it. The very NEGATIVE part is, in this Steam version, the Achievements, that are totally bugged cause once you acquire them they vanish from you account, so if a solution will be released in the form of some patch/fix i could give it 9/10 but actually it's just a 6/10, very pity cause i wanted to get those achievements and is really weird this happens :(

And I'm suddenly 23 years back, in a dry summer evening, at my classmate's place, computer screen and desk lamp on, with the voice of some kids in the park outside the window, playing Speedball with a black and red joystick. Nostalgia.

Still the same old Speedball. The Game hasn't changed since the early 90's, but sadly 'games' have. It's still a great nostalgia blast. I miss my old Amiga 500...

Argh, conflicted. Thumbs up or thumbs down?

There are good(ish) and bad points to this tarted up version of the 1990s classic.

Good(ish):

It looks OK
It's full of nostalgia
It's playable enough
You can turn your brain off and jusy play

Bad:

Gameplay (and to my mind graphics) are not as good as the Amiga or Atari ST version. This is not forgiveable in 2014.
It's too easy
The ball velocity has been slowed down
Clumsy animation

So why am I still playing it? Because my Amiga mis long dead and as bad a version as this is, it's still as close to the original as I'm going to get.

Marginal thumbs up 5/10

For all other lamers ;-) nice scifi rugbylike sportsgame singleplayercampagn, local multiplayer and a lot of fun. There are different targets and goals to get points for winning a match. No mercy foul the opponents as often as you can :)

I must have spent thousands of hours as a kid playing this game. Never getting tired of the bone crunching tackles or the "Ice cream" yells. Always coming so close to winning the league and then getting stomped on by that one team. After a few failed comebacks it's nice to see someone sticking to the orginal formula but giving it a bit of polish. The addition of a 10 year career mode is a welcome addition. The new teams are brutal at first but they are beatable. It's also nice to be able to play in new arenas but somehow I can't help but be drawn back to those original steel coloured floors.

They left out some stuff from the first one if memory serves, like you could bribe a match offical to give you more time on the pitch. I'm kind of sad they replaced some of the artwork too.

Sadly the people who made this game are no longer around. To the Bitmap Brothers. For missing and forgotten homework, not enough sleep and most of all, Brutal Deluxe.
