About This Game

Delver is a first person action roguelike dungeon crawl with crunchy pixels.

Take the role of an adventurer that tries their fate in the dark dungeons (and probably dies horribly). Fight monsters, grab loot, hoard potions, and level up!
Quest for the Yithidian orb at the darkest depths of the dungeon and attempt to bring it back to the surface - getting to it may be the easy part.
Levels are randomly generated in each playthrough so you'll never know quite what's around the corner.

Delver is in an unfinished beta state at the moment and has it's share of bugs and rough edges that need filed down, but it's very playable even in this unfinished state. Help us guide the direction of the game with your early access help and feedback. Our future plans are to revamp all of the art and sound, increase the depth of the RPG system, add special events and minibosses to the random dungeon generator, implement full gamepad support, and add a ton of new content. Help make Delver the best game it can be!

PROS:
-Dive-on-in style of play, start the game, jump in and try your luck!
-Permadeath makes the game feel more enthralling until the inevitable loss of a character you like/got far with.
-Lovely pixelated art style.
-Britty guud atmosphere, and the level designs are varied, too!
-Combat feels good, and kills gitcha PUMPED.
-Exploration is satifying.
-Loot is restricted to items you can use, no shop/merchant goo-goo-goo bull-♥♥♥♥.
-Randomly generated dungeons keep each play session fresher than the average bear.

CONS:
-Pretty much abandoned, although the devs beg to differ on their twitter (but I'm not making a twitter to find out lol ♥♥♥♥ twitter).
-Few bugs here and there, nothing really game-breaking that I've run into thus far.
-Is still in beta stage after being released nearly three years ago for EA (Early Access) purchase.
-Last update was September 21st, 2015. Quickly approaching the year mark since it was updated.

All in all, I'll gladly change this review to a recommendation as soon as another update comes along/the devs show they care/it comes out as a full release. Really fun FPS roguelike, but unless you can comfortably toss $7.99 away on a game that may or may not be finished, I'd recommend waiting for a sale or it's full release.

its a good game but... Ive gotten two very good runs and now i cant complete ether of them because of the 'improved' sewers sometimes they forget to put a ladder in plases so when you fall your stuck but it fills the dungeon/old DOOM niche.

In response to the recent crap about this game being abandoned:

Now I have been hearing a lot of crap about how this game has been abandoned and how you “Should not buy it until its finished.” Screw those guys. They have NOT played it enough. I mean the guys have not even played 5 hours. So yes this game has not been updated since 9/20/2015, but if you take a honest look at what they have here its a near complete game. The only update it may need are a couple of bug fixes to things not even game breaking. I mean its not like cube world where there is nothing and might be abandoned. Cube world is boring and abandoned. This game is fun and might be abandoned. This game still has new things to throw at me and I have played 42 hours so far and thinking I've seen everything but then I made a new play through and boom I've seen a dungeon layout that I've never seen before. I even saw some treasure rooms and I'm like “Since when did delver have treasure rooms?” Put this game on your wish list and buy it when its on sale. This game is worth it.

Now time to my actual review

This game is a throwback to how games used to be. Before story was added. Before you needed to know enough statistics you might as well get a fricken degree in the stuff. I thinking of YOU pokemon, I love you but my gosh your competitive play is just full of maths. Literally you wake up at a camp and need talk to some guys and walk into a door and boom your in the game. Your goal? Get to the end of the dungeon, grab the orb and get back to the start. Sounds easy right? Hah! Nope! As soon as you grab the orb, the quiet peacefull dungeon run you had on the way down, which I must say isn't very hard but just engaging enough to keep playing but at the same time punishes your mistakes, is now a absolute hell hole where you just want to survive the trek up. I make sounds of terror that I have never made before on my way up. If your an angry person, this game may not be for you just for this part. My gosh I love it. As soon as you grab the orb you see why this game is called rouge like.

I rate this game 10/10 yes I really do, I don't care if its abandoned or not this is a good game.
If you don't want to buy it now put it on your wish list and remember it exists because you have no excuse to not buy this game when its on sale. This is one of the best Indie games I've played and deserves more credit.

This game is great and serves as a wonderful jump-in-and-kill-stuff-for-30-minutes style game. The devs have put a lot of hard work into it, and I for one am very thankful. The game is well worth the price, despite what the whiners say.

It still has some growing to do, but I honestly love it and can't wait to see how it develops. I have fallen for rogue-likes, and the charm that this one has really sets it apart. As does it's potential.

BTW, It is certainly not abandonware, but people do have lives. Evidently the developers twitter is the best place to get an idea of the situation. Here!

Good concept. Sadly it's only been an "ok" experience for me so far, but it still might be something you would enjoy. I can't recommend it because it's nothing special. Nothing special at all. If it ever gets updated and improves even a bit it might be enough for me to recommend it, but right now it isn't.

For as much flak as this game get's it is quite fun, although the dev's have basically abandoned this game there's still enough to it that will hold your attention.

I won't bore you with details, other than be a man and go attack and speed only.

However I will say that the magic and potion system are very annoying, a mana bar would suffice.
And it's kinda hard to tell what your skill points do for you.

AMAZING GAME, AMAZING POTENTIAL

Although, game has been out for 2.5 years and is still in Early Access, just wait until it gets updated or updated frequently.

It's perfectly fine now, but i think this is all the content we're gonna get atleast for a couple months.
It's been well over half a year since the last update.

btw not much has changed over that 2.5 years of development.

Some FPS Roguelikes for you instead:
Ziggurat
Tower Of Guns
Heavy Bullets
Barony
One More Dungeon
Black Ice
Eldritch
Bunker Punks

I beat this game on my very first try in under two hours, and I've just realized that that means I can get a refund for it, which I'm now sure to do. For what this game is, it looks and feels very, very nice. The pixel art, engine, and polish on this game are all very well done, and the beginning of the game left a pretty good taste in my mouth (which may be more than some people say for my game, Barony). However, this game simply has no depth to it. The music is very limited and loops constantly, so even though it sounds nice at first it gets tiring quickly. There are no skill trees, there is no diversity in each playthrough, and the mechanical variety of the game is just so low -- it's hard to describe, but gameplay-wise, there's no MEAT to this game.

I was not aware that this game even existed when I made my own first-person "roguelike", and I've only just now played it, so I fully admit I may be biased -- but after having beaten this game, as well as coming away from it from an initially positive impression, I have to say I am not too impressed with this game now. The developers are very smart and talented, but I just don't think they put in enough effort with this game. This is probably what I'd call a wasted opportunity for some really nice first-person RPG goodness.

Delver is a randomly-generated, first-person dungeon-crawler where you try to traverse a cave system to find a magical orb and bring it back outside.

Again, it's one of those games that you stop enjoying once you learn how to beat it and then you just breeze through it with minimal effort.

The game has low replayability, but I will say it was fun for the first hour or two, but afterwards, I was like "Okay, I beat it. I'm never playing this game agian."

It's not a bad game at all, but I can't honestly recommend it. It was a fun little adventure for an hour or two but it got old quickly.

I requested refund right away.

It's fun for the first little while, but it doesn't take long to figure out that this game lacks any real content.

I decided to research this game (wiki) after playing for a while.
Here's my conclusion.

There's a lack of monster and level diversity, there isn't a huge variety of items, there's no way to sell items (not a huge issue, but still worth mentioning).

The game engine was well made, the dungeons are somewhat fun to explore, but it's easy to see how this game would get repetitive fast. It's strikingly similar to Minecraft, yet different. While Minecraft focuses on exploration and diversity (biomes, items, creatures, etc.), the developers of this game only chose to focus on dungeon exploration with little creativity in respect to monsters, items, and biome.

I understand content takes time to add, but this game is already in beta, lacks a solid update history, and most importantly - diversity in monster, characters, and items. Let's get real, this game has been out since 2013 and it is now 2016 - So where's the content?

While this game may provide fun for a short while, I would stay away from this one until the developers can get their act together.

Consumers work hard for their money and deserve a polished game - this one is just not there yet.

Pretty decent game. It still needs work and I honestly think you should hold out for a release because it's been four months since the last word on development and honestly this game is barely worth $8 in it's current state. It's a pretty engaging game if dungeon crawls are your thing. It's got all the stuff that makes a dungeon crawler wonderful.

I enjoyed it a lot but I have a couple gripes:

First, this game is like all the other roguelike-likes. It has randomly generated levels and some light RPG mechanics and that's it for likenesses. I would love to have a roguelike-like that doesn't distance itself so heavily from roguelike mechanics, but what can you do.

Second, the difficulty spikes through the ceiling at the end. The game's really easy for something that bills itself as a roguelike game, up until the very end. It's really frustrating to work your way through the game for an hour or two only to hit an unbeatable ending that throws the cheapest difficulty it can at you: flooding the rooms with spawns of endgame enemies at a rate of ~1/sec(that's an honest estimation, not an exaggeration). I'm all for reasonable progression of difficulty, and this ain't it.

Overall, I kinda-sorta recommend this game. It definitely needs work, but I think you'll find some enjoyment out of it in its current state. Whether that enjoyment is worth $8 is debatable. I would personally suggest you wait for more work to be done on it before buying.

Game has some serious balance issues. Enemies that jump at you can jump and hit you well before they're in your weapon range. Sometimes they land on top of you where you can't hit them but they can hit you. I've seen bats fly up through the ceiling where you can't hit them, only to fly down out of the ceiling to hit you. Despite the fact that the game isn't too difficult it just feels like it can have many cheap hit moments. I'd rather have a hard game that felt fair.

Arrows are messed up. If you shoot an arrow then pick it up again it no longer stacks in the same stack. Arrows bought in the store don't stack in the same stack. It's like what the heck were they thinking?

No I have not put a whole lot of time into this game. That's because there's not much to the game right now. It has around 10 levels to explore.
