Huntsman: the Orphanage default controller settings

Hi Huntsman: The Orphanage players, if you click on the Community Hub's Artwork tab you'll find the original default controller settings menu for easy reference. Just double-click an entry on your own dialogue menu and then move your controller joystick or press a key to set that control if you want to customize anything (the default keyboard controls are shown at the bottom of the list). The game supports mouse and keyboard, joysticks, PS3 controllers and "Xbox for Windows" controllers, and there's a diagram there too to show the default controller layout. Enjoy!

Welcome to the Halloween Edition v1.03!

Take a deep breath, dim the lights, put on your headphones...

Non-linear first-person gameplay lets you explore Grimhaven Orphanage and discover the characters who once lived there – voiced by Dan Bull, Chuck Huber and Raychul Moore, plus a multitude of other great voices from around the world - some of which we discovered through our global YouTube auditions!

We call this ‘alt horror’ because it has no graphic violence, blood or guns. As the player, you have no defense... however, you must show empathy and courage to save the twelve missing orphans. This is a game for people who like to explore, listen, think and solve - and play cat and mouse in a dark and scary maze. Listen to the nineteen personal creepypasta-style stories to piece together the mysterious events of that fateful night in 1898, when twelve orphans simply... disappeared! Now with shorter (30-60 sec) in-game stories to enhance the tension and new plot twists when you least expect them! And don’t panic story lovers! The full stories are still there – on the menu page and somewhere within the game… if you know where to look!!

Find the twelve orphan’s mementos and place them on the correct headstones to set the lost souls free. Did we mention the headstones are in a hedge maze? Custom-created by a ‘Ripley’s Believe-It-Or-Not’ Maze Master? No problem! But first you’ll have to find the key... Are you up to the challenge? Did we mention the Huntsman… in the maze… stalking you? Did we mention he may also be lurking in Grimhaven Orphanage?

So – how fast can you turn and run? Well you won’t know ‘till you check it out! So go do it! Have fun!! Scare yourself as much as you want (maybe you should keep the hallway light on…!)

This is a Free Upgrade for all our Steam key holders and supporters of our Black Friday Edition – THANK YOU!

Do not buy this game. I can't believe steam allows games like this. Even if this was a mobile app i would feel ripped off.

This game consists of only one map and is smaller than the average counterstrike map. You simply have to walk around and find a dozen items. There is no inventory just your left hand, so you have to physically carry each item one by one. It's a pain in the ♥♥♥.

There are no enemies no nothing, just this "Huntsman" guy who you die if you get too close to. He doesn't attack your or chase you or anything he just slowly walks around the map making a clicking noise so you know when to avoid him. Seriously the first time i saw him he was just standing there and he just looks ahead and i just stopped and was like.. wait.. this is why im supposed to be scared? Than all the sudden the main menu screen shows and it says "start new game" it really doesn't get much stupider than this. It really doesn't.

The devs are very inexperienced and do not really know how to do anything for that matter. You can't physically open doors, they just float open like some sort of magic trick and you hear the doorknob turn. When you place items on the floor they sometimes just float in midair.

There is no savegame or anything, you can spend an hour collecting items than just accidentally step within a 30ft radius of the hunstman and your game will just end.

The graphics are mediocre, very bland and not sharp or high resolution textures.

You can't open drawers, you can't open cabinets, its just a bare, boring, stiff house.

No jumpscares or enemies or anything, just an occasional door slam sound.

The tombstones you have to find are literally inside of a maze.. Like seriously? How is this supposed to be fun? it just makes you want to put your fist through your monitor..

Oh and i didn't even get to the worst part, you have to click on these hanging portaits of each character which plays an audio file of their entire life story.. Literally there are some that are half an hour. No joke. Half an hour. And you can't stop it or run away from it.. You have to listen to a half an hour story and the second you think its over, there is a short pause and they start talking again, you will literally fall asleep at your computer. You are supposed to listen to their entire life story just to figure out which item is theirs.

Stupidest game i've ever played in my entire life. Not only do i want a refund but i want compensation for brain damage having to listen to the dialogue in this stupid game.

This is one of the worst horror games I've ever played, and a title that anyone hoping for an intuitive, fun game (horror or not) should steer well clear of.

For starters, despite relatively low-res Unity Engine graphics, the game has a crippling framerate. A lot of indie horror games do this to make you feel more trapped and less able to get away from monsters, but with this one, the game is too slow to catch up with your control inputs.

Second, it is completely unclear what you're supposed to do. Sure, the objective to free the orphans is written all over the game, but I tore this damn orphanage and all its grounds apart looking for the hedge maze in which their graves are located. When I saw it was behind a locked gate, I tore the premises apart a second time with no luck. As for the objects you have to find, rather than give ANY indication whatsoever that the items might be near, you have to pixel-hunt through identical piles of junk in order to find what you're looking for, as explained by the orphans.

Thirdly, the game stumbles badly in the horror department. Your phone will flash freaky images and videos but since it's in a tiny screen out of your peripheral, they're not that scary. In fact, they're annoying. I would have been scared had the videos taken up the entire screen or something.

Maybe I'm suffering some sort of bug, but every time I see the Huntsman, I get insta-killed. Yep. Even if I look at him for a second or two, I slowly get sucked into a black hole and have to start the whole thing over.

This game is bad. Apocalyptically bad. Horror fan or not, do yourself a favor and spend the time you would've spent with this game with something competitently made, like Amnesia or Outlast. This game can't hold a candle to either. STAY AWAY.

if someone wants to define this game in one sentence, I would say

,, Hide & seek with items / portraits in old house "

Game was slow and nothing was happen. From time to time I woke up when someone yelled in phone and then i sleep again. The idea was good but this was toooomuch boring to see hide advantages.

The biggest disappointment was when I walked past the limb in the attic and prepared myself for something that throws me out of the chair .... for now i cant understand how they can ruin that scenery..

I love indie horror games, I've played a fair few of them but when I'm going to throw down cash I want a wholesome experience. I've played free indie horror games with more depth and polish than this. I really dislike it. What I would've liked to see is instead of the phone's screen be replaced with a corny video of who knows what diddlin' whatever. I'd like to have seen something appear within the room dynamically but only be viewable on the phone screen. I'd also like to have the mouse cursor locked to the center of the screen. This is a game made with Unity, Locking the cursor to the center of the screen is a mouse click away. No programming needed. These two things completely ruined the immersion for me.

It feels more like a walking simulator a la Dear Esther than a horror game and a short one at that. Scares are few, if any. In fact, I'd call this game boring. All you do is lug around a number of items and watching clips on your îngame phone that try to evoke the creepy child trope, but comes off so forced and clichéd that its more annoying than anything. There is no sense of urgency or tangible threat while doing so, as the titular Huntsman is easily avoided. To compound these issues, the map is small and visually unappealing in both technical and aesthetic aspects, with level design that might make sort of sense from a real life perspective, but makes for a poor game.
Overall a below average, quite dull experience that might provide a momentary distraction for some, but falls completely flat for anyone who ever played some of the far superior horror games out there.

Huntsman: The Orphanage is one of those very rare games that has an interesting idea for a game, and it works pretty well. It is one of those games that whilst you can watch people play it, the only way to really get the full experience of the game is to play it yourself.

I also like how they take the sound of a ticking clock and make it something that you will learn to fear. I have lost count the amount of times I thought I heard it in game and breathed a sigh of relief when I realised it was the clock on my wall that I heard, Which to me shows how atmospheric the game is if they can make me get scared by my own clock. The stories that each of the characters have to tell also add to the games atmosphere. I honestly believe that these stories wouldn't look out of place in a movie as it is just so well told by each of the people that they got to play the characters in the game.

And they have gotten a Ripley's Believe It or Not master to create the maze that the Huntsman calls home. And you will get lost in it, I have many times, I usually end up visiting the same grave 3 or 4 times as I look for the Orphan I am trying to free. Not to mention nearly jumping out of my skin as I turned a corner and there was the Huntsman making his way towards me in the maze.

The Huntsman himself is a creature I have learned to love and fear. He is based on a Huntsman spider: Only he is a lot bigger and his prey is you. This is a rare gem of a game, with so many games out there going for the jump scare tactic. It is a nice refreshing change to play something that goes for atmospheric horror and really gives me the creeps whenever I play it. And for that, I thank ShadowShifters for giving me this game to play and look forward to whatever they decide to do next.
