Last day to register for Combo Breaker 2016!

Registration closes tonight at 11:59PM (MDT, I assume). If you haven't registered yet and are going, DO SO!
https://combobreaker.org/register

Additionally, I'll finally have time this weekend to look at why the game started running worse for people, and maybe be able to make a new build. Yay? Yay.

Yes, this was worth a Steam announcement - Skullgirls has over 160 entrants, which is huge for any game that doesn't end in "V". :^P

Skullgirls 2nd Encore Features DLC released; prices reduced!

Mac crossplay vs PC/Linux is now fixed, and it once again hopefully runs on all old MacOS versions it used to run on. Update your game, Mac users!

It's been a long time!*

Do you like voiced story mode?
Do you like Challenges? Trials?
Do you like MISCELLANEOUS FIXES? **
Do you like PAYING LESS MONEY FOR SKULLGIRLS?!?!

WELL THEN HAVE I GOT AN UPDATE FOR YOU!
I still have an update if you don't really like miscellaneous fixes or paying less money for Skullgirls, but it will be markedly less exciting in that case.

New Prices
- The base game is now $9.99. Forever.
- The DLC characters are now $1.99 each. Forever.
We love you, too.
- The 2nd Encore Features DLC is $15, and discounted for the first week: in theory it's 33% off ($10) if you don't own any DLC, and 50% off ($7.50) if you do own DLC. (This might be broken if you have the IGG-backer versions of the DLC, rather than the paid DLC. We are looking into it.) It includes all the DLC characters, English voiced story mode, Challenges, Trials for every character, and Survival Mode.

General
- Added some slick new guest art to the Art Gallery courtesy of Arc System Works, the publisher for the Japanese version!
- Updated/unified the credits.
- Fixed some other things I've forgotten. Yes, really, it was like 5 months ago...
- Known issue on Linux: Using the nVidia binary drivers 364.15 with KDE 5 is known to cause graphics issues. We're looking into it.
- This build does not include the fix for a newly discovered projectile-combo-start bug for P2. That needs to be exhaustively tested first.
- We've been doing a lot of dev streams for Indivisible, you know, if you're into that sort of thing...

Other Platforms
- Skullgirls is out on the Vita in the US, and very soon (the 15th) in Japan. We have no word on when it will be released Europe yet. >.<
- The Japanese PS4 version also comes out on the 15th. It adds Japanese voice acting, and there is a physical version!

-- Footnotes --
When was the last time you saw a Steam announcement that collated footnotes?
YEAH I THOUGHT SO.

* ...Lenneth. Would you like to know the status of your Einharjar? Would you like to know her status? +5 Bravery - Approached by Thor at the Aesir Mixer last week, rebuffed his awkward advances.

** Oh, come on. EVERYBODY loves miscellaneous fixes!

Wondering about the price of the 2nd Encore Features DLC? The $15 is just for the work involved in Voiced Story Mode/Challenges/Trials/Survival. The included DLC characters are basically free, because they must be included - Challenges etc. don't care whether you own the character or not. If you uninstall a DLC character and play a challenge or trial involving them, the game may crash! So don't do that. :^)

When was the last time you saw a Steam announcement that used the word "collated"?
YEAH I THOUGHT SO.

A fighting game more than worth it's asking price. Responsive gameplay, diverse character playstyles and a tutorial that I want to go through over and over again because it's engaging, fun and educational. This is a game I can come back to time and time again. Love Skullgirls and look forward to seeing more from this developer.

This is Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, but without the infinite combo glitches. I am yet to play online, since Beowulf feels so easy to play it's even unfair, and I'm yet to finish the game on Nightmare difficulty. In story mode you can actually feel sorry for the characters, I felt kinda sad with Squiggly's ending. I just find it kinda disappointing givine the Skull heart's lore, what it can do and how not really everyone actually goes through with such.

I'd give this game a 9/10.

Excellent animation and storytelling! Plus, it is a damn good fighting game.

The issue comes with the DLC characters lacking the amount of caution placed in the base characters. They all have an extensive kit and minor hangups which then leads to combat becoming an abusive match of phone-dialing.

Anyone you find online has their skills locked in. I know I do! Expect to see about five people out there repeating the same set-up and assist attacks. Sure, this is nothing new from the genre... but Christ almighty, is it hard to ask for people to go into Quick Match without thinking of it as Ranked?

Good luck trying to teach this game to anyone. Even 2nd Encore's tutorials are trash. I personally hunted down Wikis and tutorials to familiarize myself with al the lingo and moves... not worth it. A hundred hours and then some of practice may have enabled me to beat some players who were amongst the top 10 of the leaderboard - because everyone online repeats the same set-ups... ugh.

When the updates stopped, the game died harder than before. 2nd Encore is a disappointment.

Truly mediocre community raving about skill and hardcore prowess whilst denouncing the actuallity of this bleeding genre... it's basically another mentally rampaged niche community of lonely weebs.

Fun for the $15.

A fighting game with suprisingly alot of deep mechanics, people say this game is just there to be flashy with it's female characters but to be honest this game is really fun and reminds me of playing games like tekken 3 and street fighter, pick up this game but make sure you have a controller first because keyboard layout is confusing asf

Whether you're new to fighters, or a veteran at them, this is a game I highly recommend for anyone wanting to try. The story is a strong point, it holds the original "Fight for the x" type story, but with more depth. I do wish there were more introductions before just plainly jumping into a battle however. And then we touch on the gameplay.

COMBOS!!!

This game tenders a lot more to raw skill, so expect your butt to be royally kicked when playing online. Combos are harsh, and usually whoever can get one another in a 50-hit combo will be expecting a victory in no time. There's not really much of a breaker-type ability, just counters, pokes and blocks.

Characters

The strict albeit sexy characters are no short of vibrant personalities and traits, like the schoolgirl Filia, who has a parasite living on her head acts as majority of her attacks, and the cartoony Peacock, who has a squad of various characters and has attacks like you would see in Loony Toons.

Part of the charm of this game (and most other fighters) is finding which character is right for you. There are TONS of attacks and fighting styles, although they are broken up into categories like light kicks and heavy punches.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE

The one flaw (for me at least) is that this game is incredibly hard to play without a joystick insert joke about sexy female fighters here So I would highly recommend using one or getting one, so that the combos later on are actually doable. Controllers work too, but seeing as there are 6 main attack buttons, plus directional movement and an additional 2 or 3, it'll be a mess on one.

Final Thoughts + Score

Skullgirls is a unique fighting game with a great story, solid characters and extraordinarily fun gameplay. Combos can be a bit touchy at times, but it makes up for it in gameplay. I would recommend to anyone who is a fan of fighters, or newcomers.

I'm going to be honest: I liked this game the minute I started it up, went into the training section, and saw the word "tutorial". I'm one of those people that pauses fighting games in the middle of a match to look up moves and combos, and having a place where I was taught, not only how to use them, but when to use them, was incredible for me. I mean, yeah, it has great art, an awesome soundtrack, unforgettable characters and awesome mechanics, but the fact that it actually taught me, in-depth, how to play the game, was what sold it for me. If you too are a fighting game noob, this is probably one of the better ones to pick up. Word of advice, though: Don't go online unless you're actually good at the game. Everyone else is, and they'll wreck your steez real quick.

Nowadays starting a fighting game is hard, you have to go against the big companies like Capcom and Namco in which they have lovable and nostalgic fighting game series. To compete against the big ones and attract people to play, is necessary to have a game with good character design and a lot of personality in the game and characters. Skullgirls has more than that to spare, each character's personality overflows through all game.

A nice 2D fighting game with great story campaigns, nice arts and animation, and definitely beautiful music! My only complaint is that the game is rather difficult on keyboard, but otherwise it nails every other aspects of what makes a great fighting game.

Would recommend it even at full retail price, 10/10

Fantastic visuals, tight controls, incredible soundtrack. If you're into scantily-clad cartoon girls whaling on each other, this is the game for you! Skullgirls is a good beginner game if you're interested in other fighting games. Unfortunately, it suffers from unbalanced characters and a relatively small playerbase. In the event you do find someone online to fight, they're probably going to be frustratingly good, or have no clue what they're doing, effectively estranging intermediate-level players if they don't have their own friends to play with. It is a cool game but it did not survive in the long run.

With fun combat and mechanics Skullgirls is a beautiful anime 2d fighting game. The art and the graphics are really nice and I loved the soundtrack (just do a YouTube search for “The Fish Man's Dance” and “The Legend of the Skull Heart” -my two favorite- they are amazing!).
Game has a comprehensive tutorial, gameplay in general is really good.
The characters have a lot of style and personality, I love the cast, it’s very original. The only problem is that there are not enough characters since the roster is rather small.
As for game modes it has different ones, like single player story, arcade mode and vs. I’m sure you will have fun in every one of them. By the way, the controls are intuitive and responsive.
A must have if you are fan of anime and/or fighting games.

This is possibly one of the best fighting games to have come out in recent years. It is a very technical fighter that is suprisingly easy to pick up and play, it does help if you learn but it is easy to do with the most amazing tutorial you will ever witness. It covers genuine combos you will use competetivly. The art style is amazing with a jazz soundtrack and some very suggestive clothing. Seriously from seasoned fighting game veterens to fighting game virgins this is the game for you.

Skullgirls is like that one girl you dated in high school.

She will rip your heart out, crush it to smithereens and spit on your face to rub it in that she has defeated you.

And you still love her anyway.

The characters are all gorgeous. The stages are vibrant and beautiful. The music is jazzy and upbeat. The game feels like it was made with serious heart. A Skull Heart, perhaps.

Buy this game.

$10 is definitely worth the price for this game whether you are a casual or competitive gamer. It takes a little bit of time to find the tempo of the game, but once you understand how the mechanics work it becomes tons of fun (Or you can just button mash too). I really love the inclusion of the infinite prevention system which prevents people from spamming the same combo into itself over and over again. As for the storyline, you really bond with each character even for the short amount of time it takes to play through the story mode. It makes you want to know more about their past events and how they are related to each other. If you want my opinion about the 2nd Encore DLC, it's pretty much the same as what others say. Buy it if you want the full experience (All characters, color palettes, stages, voiced story mode, etc.). I don't really feel like it's a necessary addition, but it's nice to have. Overall great game with hours of fun.

Skullgirls is a fantastic fighting game to start out with. It really does help you learn a lot of the inputs needed to play which can be a difficulty for a lot of new players to fighting games in general. All of the characters are loveable in their own ways and its a very well animated game with a great soundtrack.

Skullgirls is a combo heavy game a lot like the Marvel Vs Capcom series. A lot of memorizing goes into this game if you really want to learn it, A lot of the imputs are pretty lenient and its pretty easy to link one hit into another without any trouble of timing.

This is a great game to get for 10 dollars and often goes on sale, definitely would reccomend for anyone interested.

Skullgirls is a 2D Fighter akin to games like Marvel vs. Capcom and Street Fighter, and damn is it fun.

There may be only 8 fighters (12 if you get the DLC), not one character feels too similiar to each other or get boring to play as. They each have their own combos, moves, personalities, and strategies, and it's so glorious. My personal favorites are Squigly, Big Band, and Double. If there's any real gripe I have with the gameplay, it's that it takes a very long time to master a single character, and even though I only put over 35 hours into this game as the time I'm writing this, I've only managed to get really good with Squigly. But once you start getting super good and start kicking ♥♥♥ online, nothing feels so much better, all made better as when you hit your opponent, you really feel it and it only makes the game feel much better.

My only real gripe with this game is the story. While it is a really goofy and fun fighting game, the stories the characters go through are incredibly out of place and flat-out depressing, especially Painwheel and Peacock. The game's boss Marie isn't much better either, as she suffers from tradition as "The Super Duper Cheap Fighting Game Boss", and you'll have an absolutely miserable time with her if you're not a projectile using character.

If you love fighting games, then definetely give this game a shot, just don't expect a great story out of it and play it as the incredibly solid fighter it is.

Let see now, I remember buyin skull girls for the X360 back when it first came, I'm still playing and getting my ♥♥♥ whooped but I dont really care cuz this is a GREAT FIGHTING GAME.

* TO NEW PLAYERS *
This is worth your $10.00 (price at current time of post) and to tell the truth you don't really need to puchase the DLC character right away. It's more fun, YES, but before you invest your $2.00 (per character... WORTH IT!) on new characters you have to make sure you get your basics down. Also don't worry about losing all the time, it's discouraging sure, but if you played dark souls then losing only makes you better.

* TO OLD PLAYERS *
LETS FIGHT MATHA FAKAS!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOT!!!
